Vermont restaurant removes bacon sign because it is offensive to Muslims
Yesterday America’s Watchtower covered the story of the University of Colorado being called “culturally chauvinist” for naming dorms with English names and today brings us anther story of political correctness run amok.
Today’s story comes from the state of Vermont and includes a restaurant and a sign with the word ‘bacon’ in it. According to this story, the town of Winooski allows businesses to put up signs in public parks where that business has helped to maintain public flowerbeds. ‘Sneakers Bistro’ is a restaurant which was involved in the program.
So ‘Sneakers Bistro’ put up a sign which read ‘Yield Sneakers Bacon’ and that is when the problem began. If you are on Facebook you have most likely seen the bacon meme pop up from time to time and, in my opinion, this was probably a takeoff from that meme–or perhaps inspired by it. But that is just a guess.
But not everyone eats bacon, and as you probably know, Muslims are not allowed to eat bacon or any other pork product. One Muslim woman took to an internet forum (not named in the linked article) and called the sign “offensive” and “insensitive to those who do not consume pork.”
The restaurant removed the sign. Here is the statement released by Sneakers Bistro on Facebook:
We are here to serve people BREAKFAST, not politics. We removed the sign that was located on public property as a gesture of respect for our diverse community. There were also concerns raised about safety. Removing it was not a difficult decision. We still love bacon. We still love eggs. Please have the political conversation elsewhere.”
This is not the first time something like this has happened: back in May students at the University of St. Thomas had to cancel a hump day event which featured a petting zoo with a camel because it was deemed to be insensitive to Muslims, but I have a question about the statement: it reads that “there were also concerns raised about safety. What exactly does that mean?
I am going to go out on a limb here and state that most likely the town of Winooski has ordinances and regulations governing signs which are placed on public property for governing safety issues and protecting the view of public property to ensure they do not ruin the sight lines as do most cities, towns, and states so what was the real threat? Were they threatened?
The University of Colorado was called “culturally chauvinist” for naming dorms in English, what is this if it is not another example of being “culturally chauvinist” on the part of the Muslim woman who forced the removal of this sign for cultural reasons?
UPDATE: I have added a picture of the sign and I fail to see any safety issue. Also, the backlash has continued and Sneakers Bistro has taken down their Facebook page and their Yelps review page.

What’s next banning turkey bacon? These genuflecting liberals must truly believe they will be spared once jihad reaches our shores. They will be judged under sharia law like the rest of us.

Why does anyone give a rats behind if some fool (Muslim?) is offended by the word bacon? These idiots on the left need to chill just a tad.

It’s about time someone took on the real issues that divide society! Screw Ferguson, let’s get some “justice” for bacon!

We know this is just another ‘arm of the Agenda’. This Gov. probably has its hire’s to go out and push the envelop – just like the trolls. Notice it’s usually 1 person that starts the ball rolling and those in positions of power push it along. A subtle un-Constitution ploy and we’re back to the Hegelian Dialectic – cause the problem, solve it by removing the obstacle and forward the agenda.

Exactly what this is, if they did not create the crisis they will take advantage of it anyway. Never let a good crisis go to waste…

Full blown stupidity! What’s next? Is Braum’s supposed to remove their bacon cheesburger from the menu because the wording might offend a Muslim? Seriously, how far will this be allowed to go?

I have been wondering the same thing myself Larry and I do not doubt that at some point somebody will demand bacon be taken off menus.

as a baconatarian, I’m offended that she was offended.
in fact, I’m so offended I’m going to go to my nearest halal food store and demand that my lifestyle be recognized and catered to. hey, if gays getting married can demand wedding cakes from christian bakers, I should be able to get bacon.

Somehow I do not think you will get too far with that, it is a one way street!

Hey Allen, if you’re going halal be sure to bring a clothes pin for your nose. Unlike your corner butcher strictly following local health department codes they seem to have a dispensation as far as stinkiness in their stores.

I DEMAND they serve me bacon! illustrate absurdity by making EVERY religious objection absurd. they want their agenda, make then CHOKE on it until they relent!

I am to the point that I am tired of everyone ELSE being offended about SOMETHING! I think from now on I will start being offended, as well. Either these people have awfully thin skin, or they just like to keep shit stirred up, but it has gotten out of hand. Can someone tell me why we need to bend over backwards for every other religion or political belief?I think these people just need to be told to put up with it, or move somewhere else that they will NOT be offended. I like bacon and I will be damned if I will worry who might be around me when I eat it or prepare it. What happened to becoming part of the American culture? People used to want to be an American, now they just want to come here, but never fit in. Maybe they should just stay where they are, since they get their feelings hurt so easily. All this “correctness” gives me a headache!

I am with you there, I am offended at people who are always offended! I don’t know what there motivation is, I find it hard to believe they really think this was offensive, but I think that at some point they will go to far and the American people will say enough is enough. At least I hope so…

Why are we allowing this to happen to our country. I was raised on Bacon and Eggs. While I was in the Military, defending the rights of our country – BACON was on the daily breakfast menu. What is wrong with Baked Han or Pork Chops. Is this that group of outsiders that are supposed to be coming into our county and rip it apart from the insides?
