Mitch McConnell claims Republicans will use the power of the purse-strings to stop Barack Obama from implementing amnesty through Executive Order if they win the Senate
It has been reported that Barack Obama is preparing to offer up to 34 million illegal immigrants amnesty through Executive Order after the election is over next week.
Mitch McConnell has now vowed that if the Republicans win the Senate they will use the power of the purse-strings to stop Barack Obama’s plan dead in its tracks.
Here is what he said:
Asked about the prospect of the president granting work permits via an executive order, he said “I think it’s a bad mistake…if the American people do change the Senate and give the Republicans control of the Congress, we certainly are, through the spending process, going to try to restrain the overactive bureaucracy that’s been attacking virtually every business in America and is the reason for this slow growth, and we intend to push back against executive orders that we think aren’t warranted by trying to control the amount of money that is allocated.” And “we’re going to do what we can in Congress to try to restrain activities that we think are a mistake, and I certainly think a whole lot of unilateral executive branch-only actions in the immigration field is a mistake.”
Do you believe him? After all we have heard this before. The Republicans in the House have symbolically voted how many times to repeal Obamacare while at the same time controlling the purse-strings? And what was the result?
Of course this was all done with the Democrats controlling the Senate so any vote was dead on arrival in the Senate so I suppose they should not be faulted for not accomplishing this goal. Still, the symbolic votes were a joke designed to placate the base…
Maybe it will be different this time around if the Republicans gain control of the Senate but it must be remembered that the establishment Republicans support amnesty, they just do not like the way Barack Obama is planning on implementing it so all bets are off…

I will believe it when I see it, but I never underestimate the Republicans ability to mess up. As Dennis Prager says, there are two parties, the party of the stupid, and the party of the destructive. He says he is a member of the stupid party.

I am with you Bruce, seeing is believing at this point.

Stopping amnesty is popular with about 80% of Americans. GOP is scared to death of alienating the Hispanic vote (they are already Democrats by 68%). Clearly they will do the stiupid thing.

As Bruce said above, the Republicans are the stupid party and I think they earned than moniker.

Stupidity seems to be the right word, but I think it’s more greed and lust for power.
I can’t remember what those running for Congress ‘promised’ to do and get done … water under the bridge. Probably scrubbed from the internet too, just in case we thought to look and compare w/ what they aren’t doing! These politicians play like it’s a computer game (use to be a board game – Monopoly), oblivious to how it effects real people in the real world.

There is no doubt there is a drive for power within these people and that leads them to lie to get what they want, and of course that can lead them to make stupid decisions as well.

The blame game. “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed — and thus clamorous to be led to safety — by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

All I saw were a bunch of words like, try, intend and trying! It seemed pretty “softly” worded, so as not to come out too “strong”. As usual, they give the Republicans an out, if it doesn’t happen, they can say at least they “tried”. Don ‘t you wish for once that we had someone in a higher position that came out saying they were going to actually DO something instead of hinting at maybe they could possibly somehow try to do it? That would be a delightful change, wouldn’t it? They just cannot take the chance of offending someone, can they?

You are right about that Lou, I probably shouldn’t have used the word “vow” in the post. He definitely hedged his bet.

Reading McConnell’s quote is like getting punched in the stomach.
It drips of timidity and unprincipled political caution.
To wit, if Obama illegally issues work visas, McConnell says it would be “a bad mistake”. Bad mistake? It’s bloody UNCONSTITUTIONAL, MItch!!!!
Then he says the GOP will “push back” against executive orders that “aren’t warranted”. “Push back? And just what would that entail? Loud whining? Aren’t warranted? They would be outrageously UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!! ILLEGAL!!! Grounds for impeachment!!!!
Then he says the GOP is “trying to control” the am’t of $ that is allocated for these illegal executive actions. “Trying to control”? Trying? What the hell does that mean, Mitch?
Remarkably cynical, unprincipled and deeply discouraging. Republicans do not know how to fight and are politically unwilling to uphold their oaths to defend the Constitution!
If Il Duce Obama issues these executive orders, every GOP representative must appeal directly to the people and to the federal agents tasked with upholding and executing the laws of the nation to IGNORE, DEFY any such order. Period. Fullstop. Then they should all march on the White House in full view of the American public.
These unprincipled, wishy-washy “representatives” make me vomit!!!!

JD, had I had more time to type something above, I would have said exactly what you just said. We need men/women in the Republican party that stand up for us, not ones that maybe will do something about what is going on. Wishy-washy is a very, very good discription!

I am afraid you are right, the Republicans either don’t know how to, or unwilling to, fight for what they supposedly believe in. They can talk a good game at times but in the end they always fold.

I hope we do better than what we had in 2012, that was a let down seeing those states that “should” have been Romney go to Obama, all at once. Think there was anything fishy going on? Hmmmm!
