The Department of Justice had a secret database of Americans’ phone calls since the 1990’s
It is now being reported in this story that the Department of Injustice has had a secret database of all Americans’ phone calls made to foreign countries since the 1990’s.
Here is more:
The Justice Department secretly kept a database of U.S. calls to and from foreign countries for more than a decade, according to a new court filing and officials familiar with the program.
The revelation of another secret government database storing records of Americans’ calls came in a filing Thursday in the case of a man accused of conspiring to unlawfully export electronic goods to Iran.
A Drug Enforcement Administration official said in the three-page filing that the agency has long used administrative subpoenas—not federal court orders—to collect the metadata of U.S. calls to and from foreign countries “that were determined to have a demonstrated nexus to international drug trafficking and related criminal activities.’’
The document doesn’t identify the countries or say how many countries were involved.
Who was the President in the 1990’s? But have no fear, the Department of Injustice claims it has shut down the database and the government would never lie to us, right?
The program began in the 1990s, according to people familiar with its operation, and was shut down in August of 2013, amid reports about the DEA gathering phone records in other ways.
A Justice Department official said the database was deleted and hasn’t been searched since 2013, and said the DEA is no longer collecting bulk telephone records from U.S. phone companies.
Of course we have no way of knowing if the database was really shut down considering it was secret to begin with, but even if we take the Department of Injustice at is word and concede the point that this is the truth there is always the possibility that this database was no longer needed because the NSA is now collecting the data instead, and of course the Department of Injustice will access it if needs be.
In the quote above it states that the DEA is now gathering information in “other ways” so while this one database might be gone the information is still being collected.

I am sure all of this info has gone away. Gone to the great Data center in Utah.

Exactly, and I am sure the government would never abuse this info…

Sort of has a 60’s vibe to it.
I’m old enough to have detailed memories of: J. Edgar Hoover, Johnson, Nixon and Reagan when he was governor of California. Back then, it was called Domestic Spying, not Homeland Security.
I’m surprised they haven’t found a matching database of domestic calls. Anyone want to bet there isn’t one?

Once again all the do is change the name to make it sound less offensive but the policy is the same! I don’t doubt there is a secret database of domestic calls and in fact I would only be surprised to learn that there wasn’t.

Of course they have stopped it, they TOLD us so! In an age where anybody can tape their family, friends, enemies, cheating spouses, etc…why would we believe they are not still doing this? They have to know what we are doing, we are one tiny step away from total control here in the USA, as it is. I guess that recording what we say on the phone is one of the more minor problems we have at the moment. Of course it does show what they are capable of doing and we pretty much know they are sneaky bastards, anyway.

And they would never lie to us!

we suspected they were tracking all militia phone and data since Waco in 1993, but had no way to prove it. in defense, we set up some procedures.
we set up extended phone trees..where some branches of the tree were separated by “paul reveres”..guys that would get a phone call, and ride a few towns over, and pass on the data.. phone calls were usually made from busy locations at odd times of the day or night..like a bar just at closing time. some branches had multiple Reveres. this was to isolate that branch of the group from the main units, in case of some sort of raid they’d never get everyone, or even know who everyone was. in-house training manuals and procedures were distributed, but the isolated branches didn’t train with anyone else..and usually had no contact with the rest of the group.
the best paul reveres were food delivery men, couriers, and package delivery (fedex/UPS/USPS) . they could pick up messages and make phone calls from odd places without drawing suspicion. next best were people who worked directly with the public… bartenders, cashiers, ect. where the receiver could go and blend in with the rest of the customers and still get the message without anyone noticing.
there was no way they could follow everyone and the GPS tracking equipment they have today didn’t exist. hell the cell phone tracking ability didn’t exist..not that any of us had cell phones back then.

I don’t doubt at all that this began right after Waco as an effort to crack down on the militias. That was very interesting information, thanks for sharing it. With today’s cellphones it is impossible to hide even if you do not have the GPS on. If you are on WIFI in a public place you are being tracked.

nothing frustrates the NSA more than old-school techniques. they HATE legwork and doing actual investigation, same with the FBI. this is why they both rely on setting up patsies and Hal Turner type provocateurs it’s easy work, and they don’t have to do 99% of the dangerous stuff.
