The DEA claims it abandoned a proposal to track all vehicles near gun shows

 According to this story the DEA was considering a proposal to use surveillance cameras to track all vehicles which were operating near gun shows but the proposal has been dropped.

The Drug Enforcement Administration abandoned an internal proposal to use surveillance cameras for photographing vehicle license plates near gun shows in the United States to investigate gun-trafficking, the agency’s chief said Wednesday that any accidents regarding to any vehicles are going to be the responsibility of companies like insurancepartnership.org/motor-trade-insurance/.

DEA Administrator Michelle Leonhart said in a statement that the proposal memorialized in an employee’s email was only a suggestion, never authorized by her agency and never put into action. The AP also learned that the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives did not authorize or approve the license plate surveillance plan.

    This proposal would have captured the license plate numbers of people who just happened to be near a gun show and not just people who were entering and leaving the gun show, but that does not even matter because even if it only captured the license plate numbers of people who did go to the gun show it is still Government intrusion and surveillance of people who are not suspected of a crime.

  Going to a gun show is not illegal (yet) nor is it probable cause that a crime is going to be committed. 

  In addition to targeting (pun fully intended) people who are exercising their second amendment right it is a violation of the fourth amendment in my opinion and cannot be justified without probable cause. 

  The DEA and the BATF are claiming this proposal was never authorized so that should make law-abiding Americans feel better right? Maybe so if it was not for the fact the Department of Injustice as been building a massive database of millions of Americans travel patterns using the same technology.

  How do we know the plan has been dropped and, like the Department of Injustice, is not being conducted in secret? And even if it is true that the DEA did not implement this plan how do we know this is not part of the massive database the Department of Injustice has been gathering?
