The IRS Inspector General has confirmed there is now a criminal investigation being conducted over Lois Lerner’s lost emails

  There has been a very interesting turn of events in the IRS’s investigation into Lois Lerner’s lost emails and I have to admit I find it to be surprising simply because I expected this investigation to go nowhere; the IRS Inspector General has confirmed there is now a criminal investigation being conducted over the lost emails.

The IRS’s inspector general confirmed Thursday it is conducting a criminal investigation into how Lois G. Lerner’s emails disappeared, saying it took only two weeks for investigators to find hundreds of tapes the agency’s chief had told Congress were irretrievably destroyed.

Investigators have already scoured 744 backup tapes and gleaned 32,774 unique emails, but just two weeks ago they found an additional 424 tapes that could contain even more Lerner emails, Deputy Inspector General Timothy P. Camus told the House Oversight Committee in a rare late-night hearing meant to look into the status of the investigation.

“There is potential criminal activity,” Mr. Camus said.

    It seems to me as if the problem the IRS has right now is centered around the 400 plus tapes the IRS did not disclose to the investigators:

In addition, TIGTA learned two weeks ago there were more than 400 additional back-up tapes that IRS did not disclose to the agency for examination when it opened its probe last summer and asked for all the relevant back-ups, said Deputy IG for Investigations Timothy Camus. They believe those could include more Lerner emails from 2011.

  That certainly sounds like withholding evidence to me but of course it could be just an incredibly convenient oversight because Barack Obama has already told us there is not even a smidgen of corruption here…
