Did a CNN anchor actually try to blame the Baltimore riots on returning veterans?

April 28, 2015

Did CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin actually put part of the blame for the Baltimore riots on returning veterans during an interview with Elijah Cummins? Here is the video, I will let you be the judge:

It certainly sounds that way to me, however it is possible she was awkwardly trying to use the riots to address the serious and legitimate issue of making sure when our veterans come home from war they are provided with any counseling they might need.

However I have not heard one report coming out of Baltimore which even suggested the problem was returning veterans so even if we give her the benefit of the doubt this was not a smart way to address the issue of returning veterans–and I am not certain I am willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.

She has since apologized for her comments.

I AM BEYOND DIGUST MORE THAN ANY MIND CAN EVER COMPREHEND. THERE WILL BE BLAME EVERYWHERE, AND LIFE WILL HAVE INDIVIDUAL INCIDENTS OF EVERY KIND. WHAT I AM SICK OF, IS BLACK FEEL THAT THEY SHOULD RIOT OVER JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. THEY HAVE MADE THEMSELVES(THOSE THAT ARE RIOTING) AN UNHOLY, UNTHANKFUL, UNGRATEFUL PEOPLE. THEY HAVE BURNED DOWN JOBS AND PROPERTY, WHICH WAS CONSTRUCTED FOR THEM AND OTHERS. THEY SHOULD REALLY GO HUNGARY AND STARVE, OTHERS THAT HAVE RIOTED WITH THEM SHOULD BE INCLUDED.

can you please not type in ALL CAPS? I know you have something important to say. and I’d really like to read it. but ALL CAPS is the internet equivalent of yelling at the top of your lungs. and more than a line or two of all caps and my eyes glaze over and I move on to the next comment.

please, we’d all love to read what you have to say…but it’s really hard to read when it’s all caps. thanks.

We all know they will never let a good crisis go to waste and I can see this being part of the plan!

I believe she’s talking about the psychology of returning veterans who aren’t quite prepared for civil law enforcement. We have to look at why police are escalating quickly and fatally. And that’s just part of training.

It is quite possible that is what she is talking about and that is a legitimate issue. I have not heard anywhere that that is what the problem is in Baltimore, it just seemed a little out of place.

I need more context to know. Is there a longer clip you know of somewhere? I’m well aware these people take things and try to make it about their social issue to magnify things.

I get that Veterans have issues…you would have to live in a cave not to get that…but to make that implication sent me straight over the edge! Sometime their good sense is overridden by the prospects of a juicy story!!

Kavalkade: I do not know of another clip so it is possible this was edited for a specific reason.
Lorra: I agree with you, there is no doubt we need to make sure our veterans get the help they need but this seems to be an example of never letting a good crisis go to waste.
