Open thread for Sunday, August 16th: ‘Tangerine’
Here is the open thread for Sunday, August 16th. Please feel free to post links to interesting articles and to discuss whatever issues arise during the course of the day. Nothing is off-topic here.
Last week we covered 9 stories, (under normal circumstances it would have been 7 stories but because the open thread came on a Saturday last week two posts which normally would have been credited to two weeks ago were counted last week) did you miss any of them? If so there is an easy way to make sure it does not happen again. I understand that all of you are busy and cannot always find the time to check the blog for updates so why not subscribe to America’s Watchtower and receive email updates whenever I write a new post? That is the easiest way to follow the blog to ensure you never miss another post.

The Twitter widget in the sidebar is fully interactive. This widget updates my tweets in real time and allows you to respond to or retweet my tweets right from the blog. It also allows you to tweet me right from America’s Watchtower. How cool is that! If you do not have a Twitter account what better reason do you need to sign up for one!
On our last night in Virginia we went to dinner at a place where there happened to be a man singing and playing acoustic guitar. He was playing mostly blues songs which I did not know but sprinkled in some classic rock as well. At one point he started playing a song which sounded instantly familiar but I could not put my finger on it right away. Eventually I realized it was a Zeppelin tune but I had to google the lyrics to come up with the title. It was ‘Tangerine.’
Back in the days of my youth I was a huge Zeppelin fan but other than radio play I had not really listened to them in many years (thinking about it now I should have found a spot for this band in my top ten considering how much I loved them back then) and it has probably been 30 years since I heard this tune.

How government works or does not work: A human interest story.
During a visit to Hackensack University Medical Center in August, 2013, I met a 45 year old man with one leg. He explained that after working in construction since high school he had lost his leg in a job related accident the prior year. It took the state of New Jersey’s bureauracracy one full year to classify him as disabled and unable to work in his profession. During that year the state provided him with a Horizon Blue Cross health insurance policy and $300 per month in food stamps. Upon classifying him as disabled the state “GRANTED” him a $900.00 per month disability payment, took away his health insurance policy (he was now on charity care) and reduced his monthly food stamp allotment from$300.00 to $35.00. He would have been treated better had he come here illegally. Shame on New Jersey, shame on the U.S. For the shabby indifference afforded a citizen who pays taxes for over 25 years; not unlike the way our veterans are treated.

This surprises anyone? The illegals are all but forced to take all the freebies. We cannot give it to them fast enough, but AMERICANS that need a bit of help have to jump thru hoops and have an attorney and then can count on being turned down the first few times they apply. I have seen it happen! Makes me sick, but that seems to be the way it will be from now on. The system is screwed up and we have let it happen over the years.
Now I hear Trump saying he will not split up illegals, yes I said it ILLEGALS, but will send them packing back over the border, as a family. Is he the only one that is saying this? So, far I hear that we will slowly work them into the system so they can come out of the shadows…ya, will be interested to see how that works. I guess I am tired of paying taxes knowing that it is going out to someone that has come here illegally, while there are people that are doing the paperwork and would be assets to the country, but they are put on hold. What the hell is wrong with the system? I imagine we have to look no further than Obama!

Peter, I guess the “shadows” is about an evasive a word as “they” are when we saw “they have done something, etc”. Somehow I am in agreement that the shadow illegals are sure the hell in our faces at Walmart or eating places
Zip, we know that Obama is not the head guy, I doubt that Soros is the head guy and I bet we never find out who is actually calling the shots..

Peter, when it comes to the illegals there are no shadows. They are all out in the open. However the video that Zip posted is spot on; there are shadows and it is the government which is operating in them.

Yep, sad and unjust. It’s reflects the character of those ruling and who are in charge. This didn’t just happen over night. Every generations has the scum that needs to be cleaned out – like weeds, they propagate more than the cultured plants and require constant attention to dig them out, or they totally take over.

Sadly Peter I think this is going to become the norm once single-payer is fully implemented. The government has to cut costs in order to pay for the illegals and citizens will suffer.

A mellower one this time Swiss! Nice. There was a line in it about changing things in the past – if possible – which brought to mind something that might interest you: time travel. For time travel to be possible it means that the future already exist, or there wouldn’t be anything to go into. It’s a closed system in some aspect: a package. Movies like ‘Back to the Future’, ‘Fringe’ and all the others state that there’s somethings that can be changed in the past, but not everything – so there’s some flexibility to change things but there limitations too – unknown why. I’d not considered that before and this song brought it to mind, so I thought to share it with you. The old saying, ‘You can’t change the past, but you can change your future.’ To me that means realizing some truth that changes the way we consider things – look at life. I guess it could be taken in by a lie too, if that’s the case. Either would influence the choices we make that produce our future. How much of our future is flexible – may be similar to the limitations of changing the past – hummm. Seems that only the Creator knows all that.

Didn’t I read somewhere that they were included, during WWII, in their rations? Either Pall Mall or Lucky Strike or Camel? Non-filtered.
It would not surprise me, sometime in the future that they tell old people it is mandatory to smoke to bring on our demise…sounds stupid, but they flip flop back and forth on things that are bad for us become good for us. You know “a study finds” stuff.

Well, that was different. I do remember all of it going on back then….I do have one question. At the beginning when all the kids are going thru the door, where are the thugs and why are they not rioting? Oh, that was then, this is now….different group of kids!

I know. Look how ‘innocent’ they look, how ‘impressionable’. Those early (real) Beatles had more innocent songs (teenage lover and songs like ‘Help’). After ’66 (and the secret society taking them over – getting into their biz) their songs got into the drug culture – Sgt. I will have to blow that image up tonight and really look at it. We know all over there are clues, suggestions, secret, whatever you want to call them that we over look most the time. If we paid closer attention, we might understand a little better what is happening to us. I guess everything is open to interpretation, but alot may be very in your face. What was that airport with all the evil stuff? One of you posted it about a week or so ago, maybe it was Denver??? I have slept since then, but that had alot of evil stuff to it.

Sorry about that Lou – the scary one. Yes, the Denver airport has those murals inside the terminals. The Economist mag. has a lot of symbolism going on too and connects in that it’s so strange. I wouldn’t look at that stuff right before going to bed though … just a suggestion. 😊 Nice thoughts and good things are better to drift off to.

You are assuming I sleep! It is more like I “doze”, never really get deep sleep for some reason. I listen to Mark Levin, Michael Savage and Red Eye Radio all night and doze.

If I listen to them like that, I wouldn’t sleep sound either!!! That ‘sound’ sleep is important – gives our brains that necessary ‘processing time’! I feel better after a deep rest – more sound and rested.

Thanks for sharing that Zip. I have heard the rumor about the real Paul being dead for many years. While I don’t know about this I do know that the song “Imagine” is not about peace, it is about communism. I have told people about this for a long time and most of the lefties look at me like I am crazy while with most of the people on the right a light seems to go off in them and they realize the song is not about what people think it is.
Just look at the lyrics: no countries, no God, and no possessions. It is clear cut to me what this song is really about.

The melody/song is so nice … but the words and meaning so ugly. I’d not connected it to communism – rather atheism, but same thing I suppose. Enslaving.

People all form their own opinions, there is the problem. One song and 10 different ways of interrupting the same song. We know, from experience that if someone is not open to different beliefs, it doesn’t happen.

Zeppelin is my all-time favorite group. There are only a handful of their songs I don’t really like and Tangerine is one, lol. 🙂

I briefly dated a man who was, also, a Zeppelin fanatic. He burned copies of all their CDs for me. I uploaded them to my laptop. On my laptop I have a few playlists: Zep; Zep favs; Zep fav favs. One could say I’m a little obsessed…. 😉

I don’t know what it is about the song but I like it. But then again when it comes to music I easily tire of the ones that get played on the radio all the time.

Zeppelin’s ‘popular’ songs aren’t my favorites. I like them, but I like lesser played songs better. The exception is, of course, Stairway to Heaven. I think it’s the greatest rock song of all time, with Bohemian Rhapsody a close second.

Those are all great songs! Their first album is probably my favorite with the blues influence. My son and the singer of his band used to play acoustic in a couple of bars and they did a great version of The Rain Song.

Just kidding, I liked seeing what others like in music, as everyone else does, I home. There was alot I had not heard before and I think it broadens our appreciation of songs and groups. Maybe we learn something along the way.

At Christmas time at Millikin University here in town the students have Vespers concerts. There are different levels they sing from and at times have candles and are walking all around the audience. It is very pretty with their outfits and the sound quality in there is wonderful. They put on a kick butt performance that we try and catch each year. This reminds me of what they do.

Our summer hasn’t been that hot. We’ve had a few steamy days, but overall we’ve had very pleasant weather.

This puts me in the mood for Christmas. I am so tired of the heat this year, there has just not been much of a break. Someone either posted here or I read somewhere else that the Farmers Almanac said we are in for a wetter and colder Winter. It sounds great now, but I might rethink it later in in the year.

That sounds about right, Laura! I have had those with multiple videos, guess you have to watch them from coming up and play it thru yourself to the end to make sure it doesn’t start on another one. The ones I hate are after the video it will have 4 suggestions to watch and some are not very nice. Guess we will have that happen from time to time.

The ‘Concepts’ one was interesting too Laura. We, around the world and even in the melting pot America, are different in many ways but we all have red blood flowing thru our veins. So, were very much the same in that regard!
Some ‘full’ songs too. Certain music has a way to bring us up an out of the dark realities and lightens us, gives us a fresh perspective. And that goes w/ what that gal (the teacher stated), that it isn’t us who has everything in our hands or on our backs – rather ‘He has the whole kooky world’ in His hand and is in the process of ‘reclaiming’ it all under His Just & Loving Rulership! The ONLY Monarch who can do it fairly & rightly!
