Is Mitt Romney preparing a convention coup to wrestle the nomination from Donald Trump?
Earlier today Mitt Romney gave a blistering anti-Trump speech in which he, of all people, called Donald Trump a phony. He also talked about how in the upcoming primaries the voters in the individual states should vote for the candidate most likely to defeat the billionaire businessman in that particular state. In typical Mitt Romney fashion rather than taking a stand and endorsing a single candidate he said he would vote for different candidates in different states in order to stop Donald Trump from winning the required delegates to win the nomination.
I have to say I found this speech to be baffling to me in regards to why this two-time loser decided to enter the fray because it seemed to me as if he had nothing to gain by taking on Donald Trump. But now it is starting to become a little clearer if this story is true. Apparently Mitt Romney has not given up on his Presidential aspirations and is looking to wrestle the nomination away from Donald Trump at a brokered convention.

Mitt Romney has instructed his closest advisers to explore the possibility of stopping Donald Trump at the Republican National Convention, a source close to Romney’s inner circle says.
The 2012 GOP nominee’s advisers are examining what a fight at the convention might look like and what rules might need revising.
“It sounds like the plan is to lock the convention,” said the source.
Romney is focused on suppressing Trump’s delegate count to prevent him from accumulating the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the nomination.
But implicit in Romney’s request to his team to explore the possibility of a convention fight is his willingness to step in and carry the party’s banner into the fall general election as the Republican nominee.
The Romney camp is denying this rumor but I have to say I find it to be the only plausible explanation for Mitt Romney’s sudden reemergence on the political stage.

I think Romney lost the election on purpose. He did not want to be known as the person who defeated the first black president. Here is a link to a critique of Romney.

It has been my contention that Trump is going to throw this election in some manner so that his good friend Hillary will make it into the White House.

Well, you could be right about Romney, CJ. Otherwise, why would he not have put up a fight when even us LOWLY voters saw that there was voter fraud going on? He doesn’t have much of a backbone and to think he would get in this race would be bad.
Steve, not sure what to think about Trump right now with him backing out of the CPAC gig….I know he would have been attacked and he knows it, but at this point he has put a BIG wedge between the party now.

I have not seen the poll numbers Lou but I would guess Trump did and decided he needed to get there to shore them up a little. Again that is just a guess. I don’t watch CPAC although sometimes I will listen to clips online. To me it is all speeches and talk which never really amounts to much.

It’s too late now, the GOP establishment has sold us out too many times. Boehner and Ryan have a lot to answer for. I also want to know who put a muzzle on Trey Gowdy? His investigation ended very suddenly with a whimper.
Romney had his chance.
The People, the Rank and File, whatever you to want to call us have had enough. No one much closer to the GOP leadership than Ted Cruz has any chance at all, either against Trump or Hillary. Frankly, I think Trump will beat all of them.
You have a similar although less spectacular event happening with the Democrats. It’s taken all the power of Hillary’s machine and the Democrat Central Committee to hold down Bernie Sanders.
The Revolution is in progress and it IS televised.

I think you are right about it being too late for the Republican party to stem this tide. Trump’s popularity is proof of just how upset the voters are and I do not see any way they can recover.
You are also right about the Democrats, it is not as in your face but the voters are showing their displeasure with the establishment as well.

I am not so sure about a win for Trump at this point after seeing the numbers last night. I know that Rubio is finished, but he just will not admit it….he wants to win at least Florida, I guess. Kasich has never had a chance, but then again, he wants to win Ohio. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t. I know it is all out war on Trump and the right will either prop up Cruz OR send in Romney. I do not dislike Cruz, but have seen him pull crap that I was not aware he had it in him to do. I will support him IF he is the nominee, but would find it hard to support Romney. I did once and he let me down because he did not have any fight in him. I know Trump has that fight.
As for Clinton, when the hell will anything take her out? Sanders is trying, but for some reason, I don’t know why, I think there is voter fraud going on there. Clinton will accept nothing less than the nomination. I wish the FBI could get enough against her and they might have, but I just do not see the DOJ enforcing anything that might put her in prison OR take her out of the race.

If Rubio wins Florida he will still have a chance but it will still be a small one. At this point I wonder if Rubio and Kasich are trying to prevent Cruz from winning the nomination. It is clear to me that one-on-one it will be a very tight race between Cruz and Trump but as long as the vote is split Trump will win the nomination. Both of these guys know they have no shot and they know by staying in they are giving the nomination to Trump so I have to wonder if that is what the plan is.
It is also clear to me that Hillary can do no wrong with the base, even if she was indicted they would still vote for her.

Nothing makes sense, does it? One would think that ALL of the Republicans would back a nominee, but then you hear that they will try and take one of them out because they will either not vote or vote DEMOCRAT! What??? I have never seen anything like it. Hillary is doing plenty of wrong, but guess that doesn’t matter.

In the end I guess it comes down to protecting the establishment and I guess that means supporting a criminal if an outsider gets the nomination…
