Sunday, April 24th open thread: ‘When Doves Cry’

April 24, 2016

open-threadHere is the open thread for Sunday, April 24th. Please feel free to post links to interesting articles and to discuss whatever issues arise during the course of the day. Nothing is off-topic here.

Last week we discussed 9 stories, did you miss any of them? If so there is an easy way to make sure it does not happen again. I understand that all of you are busy and cannot always find the time to check the blog for updates so why not subscribe to America’s Watchtower and receive email updates whenever I write a new post? That is the easiest way to follow the blog to ensure you never miss another post.

In addition to subscribing you can also follow America’s Watchtower on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the links on the right. But you will get more than that for I often post links to articles I probably will not be writing about so it is a great way to keep up with what is happening.

The Twitter widget in the sidebar is fully interactive. This widget updates my tweets in real time and allows you to respond to or retweet my tweets right from the blog. It also allows you to tweet me right from America’s Watchtower. How cool is that! If you do not have a Twitter account what better reason do you need to sign up for one!

The music world lost a man who can only be described as a legend and an icon when Prince passed away suddenly earlier this week. Whether you are a Prince fan or not you have to respect and admire the talent this man had. His music transcended all genres–from pop to rock to funk to soul and on and on…

You may be surprised to learn that I am a Prince fan but I have to admit I had to be dragged into it before I finally appreciated his music. When my beautiful wife and I first started dating I had a one track mind when it came to music. Back in the ‘8o’s I was into heavy metal and heavy metal only but my wife was, and still is, a huge Prince fan.

Being the wonderful boyfriend I was 🙂 I took Lauri to see Prince back in the day even though I did not like him at that time. I did not appreciate what I saw on stage that night because I was close-minded in regards to music. However over the years my tastes expanded and I began to understand what Lauri always saw in Prince. Several years ago now we went to see Prince again and he blew us both away. He put on one of the best shows I have ever seen live–it ranks right up there with The Cure, Radiohead, and Muse (Lauri would add the B-52s to that list) as one of the best shows I have ever been to. I can only imagine what Lauri thought of that show…

Prince’s music is so diverse that it cannot be covered in one video alone so I will start with what is probably my favorite Prince song, “When Doves Cry.” This version transitions into “Little Red Corvette.” (Prince’s dancing can get a little erotic so if you are offended by this you might not want to watch this video.)

In that video Prince showed off a little bit of his piano playing and dancing ability and these next two videos he shows off his guitar chops: The first is a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” and the second is a mega-band version of “While My Guitar Slowly Weeps.” You will have to wait until the 3:30 to see Prince, he seems to be hiding on the side of the stage until he goes into his solo but it is worth the wait.

Now let’s get funky! Prince became a Christian and he shares his Faith a little bit in the lyrics of this catchy number.

The doves are crying, RIP Prince.

While possessing an eclectic taste in music of every stripe I thought I was cool turning my son onto Joe Tex, James Brown, Taj Mahal, Prince Buster, Jimmy Cliff, Smokey Robinson, Otis Redding, DeBarge, Huey Piano Smith (give a lister to his Little Liza Jane) along with the requisite rock and rollers while at the same time having little interest in Prince’s talent as well as others of his musical genre. I chose to ignore Prince, although I liked his top pop hits such as 1999 and Little Red Corvette. That was before my son, a well rounded ( putting my musical tastes to shame) multi talented musician, born in 1981, playing several of Prince’s deeper cuts while experimenting with funk during his early high school years opened my eyes and ears. Yes, it is true that the old can learn from the young. And if there’s a Rock and Funk heaven surely he’s up there.
P.S. While appreciating most of but not all of his catalog Little Red Corvette remains my favorite.

Interesting observation as to why the kids of the upcoming generation may be cannon fodder for the left’s demasvulation agenda: Yesterday, Saturday, I attended a Little League baseball game in Cresskill, NJ. Here’s the game situation: the visiting team is up 5-0 in the last inning, top of the 6th (only 6 innings in LL baseball) looking to add to their lead. The bases are loaded, no outs and as the next batter is leaving the on-deck area to bat his teammates are shouting like a Greek chorus from the dugout “C’mon Dougie bring em home (guess the batter’s name was Doug). The coach them admonishes the kids in the dugout, “knock it off guys, he doesn’t need any more pressure!” Sad but true…

Just not the same as it used to be, is it?! At least they were still keeping score in this game I guess…
