Bernie Sanders promises a contested convention

 Back in the beginning of April the Sanders campaign was openly talking about winning the nomination at a brokered convention, however the Senator from Vermont was dealt a severe blow last week when Hillary Clinton won four out of five primary contests, thusly breaking Bernie Sanders’s winning streak.

  However these loses have not stopped Bernie Sanders from promising his supporters he will win the nomination at a brokered convention. Here is more:

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said Sunday that he will continue his challenge to front-runner Hillary Clinton even at the party’s convention in July.

“The convention will be a contested contest,” Sanders said at a Washington, D.C. press conference Sunday.

  So how does he intend to contest the convention when Hillary Clinton appears to be on the verge of acquiring the necessary allotment of delegates to win the nomination before the convention?

  It all revolves around the superdelegates:

Sanders’ pledge to push superdelegates behind Clinton to support him during the nominating contest raises the chance the Republicans’ Cleveland gathering will not be the only convention fight this summer.

“It is virtually impossible for Secretary Clinton to reach the majority of convention delegates by June 14 with pledged delegates alone,” Sanders said, referring to the final day of primaries. “She will need superdelegates to take her over the top at the convention.”

That’s where Sanders said his campaign will attempt to further complicate the front-runner’s effort. He hopes to steal superdelegates already committed to her, including some who backed her before Sanders announced his bid last April.

 In other words he has much the same strategy as Ted Cruz, only I would argue that the Democratic party’s use of the superdelegates to influence the outcome of the primary election is more blatant, and anti-democratic, than some of the convoluted processes the individual states are using to influence the outcome of the Republican primary.

  For all of the talk surrounding the Republican convention and the Cruz campaign’s effort to pick delegates likely to switch votes after the first ballot is cast not much has been said about the Sanders campaign looking to influence the votes of the superdelegates. Or the use of the superdelegates in the first place for that matter…

  Much has been made about Ted Cruz’s attempt to use the Republican party rules to stop Donald Trump from winning the nomination but virtually nothing has been said about the Democratic party using its rules to stop Bernie Sanders from winning the nomination. Personally I do not see much of a difference in the way the two parties are trying to control the outcome of the primaries, with the exception that the Democratic party is doing it more out in the open than the Republican party.
