Sunday, October 30th open thread: ‘Time Flies’

October 30, 2016

open-threadHere is the open thread for Sunday, October 30th. Please feel free to post links to interesting articles and to discuss whatever issues arise during the course of the day. Nothing is off-topic here.

Last week  we discussed 7 stories, did you miss any of them? If so there is an easy way to make sure it does not happen again. I understand that all of you are busy and cannot always find the time to check the blog for updates so why not subscribe to America’s Watchtower and receive email updates whenever I write a new post? That is the easiest way to follow the blog to ensure you never miss another post.

In addition to subscribing you can also follow America’s Watchtower on Facebook and Twitter by clicking the links on the right. But you will get more than that for I often post links to articles I probably will not be writing about so it is a great way to keep up with what is happening.

The Twitter widget in the sidebar is fully interactive. This widget updates my tweets in real time and allows you to respond to or retweet my tweets right from the blog. It also allows you to tweet me right from America’s Watchtower. How cool is that! If you do not have a Twitter account what better reason do you need to sign up for one!

Well Friday marked one year to the day that I had my surgery and I came home one year ago today. It is hard to believe this much time has already passed so here is Porcupine Tree performing “Time Flies” live from 2009.

I am so grateful and thankful for making it through that day and the ensuing weeks of my recovery and for the blessing in disguise–my return to God and the peace Jesus Christ gave me in my time of need. Philippians 4:6 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

I remember looking in the mirror and seeing a 17 year old kid looking back at me. I got married, the kids were growing up. Still saw that kid in the mirror until one day, I almost dropped the razor when I realized that the reflection in the mirror was now, my father. Kids were now getting older, I think, because I was always working. Then my kids got married. I strop the razor, harpoon my face with the shaving brush to lather my face, and froze. My grandfather was looking at me from the mirror. My kids became parents, yes, I run around after them, every opportunity I get. I look in the mirror these days and wonder, who the hell is that old guy looking back at me?

It happens very quickly. The clock speeds up, as you get older.
    Enjoy your life.

Understand totally, but I see my MOM! And, sometimes my Grandmother! My kids are 36 and 41, how they got to that age, who knows….WE were that age, once. While I was at my brothers yesterday, he turned and gave me a very strange smile and I saw my DAD! He asked why I looked so funny and I told him why…guess we do turn into our parents, Brit, not such a bad thing I guess, but maybe too quickly. We were busy living life and raising kids, who knew!

Yeah, how true. But I turned beyond my grandfather, and into some old guy That I do not recognize. Almost a “Vinegar Joe” Stilwell, type.

        Great Stuff! Thanks, Zip.
I was up on the extension ladder today, doing some work. Removed two wasp nests, and did some painting. Everyone down below was like a peanut gallery. Neighbors. Young people in their forties. My demeanor, as Vinegar Joe’s, became acerbic.

The clock sure does speed up as we get older and we must remember to not take any day for granted and enjoy the time we have on this earth.

Time tunnel…In 1969 was 23 cents p/gal inNJ. On11/1/16 a 23 cents p/gal gas tax hike goes into effect here in NJ to replenish the highway trust fund that the politicians bled dry for other stuff while our roadways and related infra-structure are crumbling.

Glad to hear Steve! And that you’re still grateful! Many will go thru something and thank God at the time, but when the danger is gone so goes their realization that they were helped by God. Human nature is one thing, the spirit nature when quickened another!
That’s why the verse you quoted caught my attention (I’m sure you knew it would!). Two verses up is: Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice. Phil 4:4
The verse you quoted can also be read: Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
If you compare it w/ the version you used notice the emphasis of focus. I figured it was NIV, because that’s what I was given when God saved me (notice who’s doing the work!).
Most all the different versions of bible out there, keep turning the focus back on us rather than who the Bible is really about! Christ dying on the cross was the work that needed to be done for ALL of us! because we were unable to pay a debt – we were born with. It’s like the National Debt. Can each of us afford to pay what they say we own? We did nothing to bring that about, we just happened to be born here (every newbie born is already in debt to the Gov. debt!). As it is in the physical so it is in the spiritual realm.
Because of our nature, we don’t do well w/ being told ‘not to do something’! Don’t Touch WET Paint

So, the NIV verse tells us (as do the other man altered bibles) don’t and do the very things by human nature rub against our grain! (esp. since in our own strength or power we’re not good at doing that, unless our ego’s being fed).
The words Jesus spoke were ‘spirit and truth’, and must be displayed His Way in writing or they aren’t approved by him and they’re void of His Life (by His SPIRIT).
Verse 4:8 shows (KJV) that God’s the one doing what needs to be done, we just believe him! ‘And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.’ NIV states ‘will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’ I’d rather Him ‘keep’ my heart and mind thru Christ who has more power than me, men or spiritual adversaries!! When someone ‘guards’ something that’s not as secure as keeping it! That’s why we have peace we can rely on Him who doesn’t lie!
What I’m pointing out is just like when Brit and each us look in the mirror and see our bodies aging (waaa) and we can’t do anything about it, we can do something – which you did Steve – about believing God and receive His gift of Salvation!
Man (woman) is always wanting to be gods, going back to the original lie in the Garden told to Eve. The great conner still lives and beguiles all who live in this world.
The Lover of our souls (which came from Him to begin w/ – we didn’t make ourselves, nor our parents) has a different Way for us.
‘Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.’ John 6:28-29
NIV .. “What must we do to do the works God requires?” [KJV didn’t mention ‘requires’ that’s a law perspective placing the works back on the person.]
“The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” Check out the difference in wording and you’ll see: believe ON vs believe IN; ON him vs IN the one. (notice the hollywood movies/show promoting ‘the one’ – same focus, anti-God.)
When the USA gov. use to be ‘of the people, for the people’ etc was changed into a different entity: “Treason was committed against the People in 1871 by the Congress. … ratified 14th Amendment and how we became “property” of the corporation and enslaved by our silence.” http://www.serendipity.li/jsmill/us_corporation.htm
So, what this world teaches us as ‘true’ turns out to be lies and enslaves to something totally different than what they say – a lying system, based on illusion … the Agenda.
Brings to mind what Jesus stated about this world and its system: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
AND THAT’S the PEACE you have and experience Steve! Glad you’re around to tell about it! 🙂
Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: http://thekingsbible.com/BibleText.aspx?bibleid=49002002
[Born that way, but by God unmertied Grace we can be made a child of God – just by believing Him!]

So much there to digest Zip, I am going to have to read it a couple of more times to get it all! Yes, I did use the NIV version and I did know you would have an in depth comment about my choice. I have finished reading the whole NIV Bible as well as comparing the OT in the NIV with the KJV. I am now back on the NT, reading the NIV, KJV, NKJV, NLT, and NRSV. Yikes it is quite a study to say the least! I don’t really like the NLT to this point, there is too much added to it. But I do find this whole study and comparison to be very interesting!
I understand what you are saying about people falling away after their personal crisis is over and when I find myself slipping into my old ways I take a step back and remind myself what God did for me when I needed Him and I am determined not to fall into that trap. It helps me so much that Lauri and her family, and my boys, are such strong believers. I am surrounded by mostly non-believers at work and have not yet had the courage to challenge them but I do feel bad that they write it off so easily because I know they probably have never even tried to study the Bible before they determined they do not believe it.

One thing I did wrong Steve was to ‘think’ that it was my job to start telling people about Jesus being true! (that the Bible IS God’s Word and not made up by man [KJB] and things like that). But found I drove more people away from God, and myself! So, God has to prepare a person’s heart/mind because it’s His drawing them and work – not ours. If we do it then we can boost (the enemy of our soul works on our pride, unawares by us, but affects us and that too can become a unproductive pit).
6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.
We are born w/ the spirit of the world and only God and His Truth/Love can do the necessary things and work – is what I’ve found. If God brings someone your way, you’ll know it in your spirit!! He’ll bring opportunities for you to share things of substance (His Word) that give God the glory and you are honored to be a part of helping another soul come to Salvation! YAY!

I understand what you are saying about driving people away because I was on the other side of it. Before I found God I was one of those who out of stubbornness would retreat more when someone tried to convince me to come back to the Church. It was out of ignorance on my part, I realize that now that I have been studying it. I am conflicted though with not having the courage to stand up when a situation presents itself to me because we are supposed to be witnesses to Jesus Christ. I do try once in awhile to throw a Bible verse into a conversation without saying where the quotation is from and the interesting thing is people sometimes like the verse without knowing where it is from.
It is interesting you mentioned God bringing someone into your life because I think that is happening to me right now. I worked with a guy at my job but he left to pursue something else. We became friends on Facebook a few months ago and when he was going through a health issue I told him my story and I found out then that he was a believer and active in his Church. We have had several conversations on FB about God and then last week he was rehired by my company, So far our schedules have been different so I have not talked to him much but I cannot help but think this was not an accident.

Well, I have done the election judge position for a few years, SO, now I am going to do the poll watcher thing. They are having a hard time finding people on the Republican side to do this. Some of the voting places are in not too good areas, but that is to be expected, in Decatur. I voted early, so that is out of the way. Now will see how it all plays out. After the polls close there will be a get together to watch either the country go down the tubes OR possibly have a fighting chance if Trump gets in.

That’s interesting Lou, I would think the Republicans would be more than happy to volunteer as poll watchers. I wonder why they are not.

Maybe they are just saying the can’t find any Republicans as an excuse to stack Democratic poll watchers…

This is the head guy for the Republican party that is arranging it….there can be one from each party. I think that Macon County is pretty Democratic, but you would think that there would be more Republicans that would want to make sure that the vote goes legally. Who knows, Steve, I have given up trying to make any sense out of this election!
