Jeff Sessions likely to be confirmed as the next Attorney General
Earlier today it was announced that Donald Trump had selected Jeff Sessions to be the next Attorney General. He is already being attacked by the left for some downright stupid comments he made many years ago (by many of the same people who defended Robert Byrd by claiming the late Senator had a change of heart) and when I was talking to a friend at work today I said I did not think he had a chance to be confirmed.
But according to this story it looks as if I was wrong:
Sen. Jeff Sessions is looking like a safe bet for Senate confirmation as attorney general — despite the Alabama lawmaker’s controversial past.
Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), a potential swing vote on the Senate Judiciary Committee, will support Sessions, a spokesman said Friday. That’s a key pickup, given Flake’s moderate views on immigration and social issues, and his opposition to Donald Trump during the campaign. Then moderate Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.) said he would support Sessions as did moderate Republican Susan Collins of Maine, all but clinching his elevation.
If Sessions can clear committee, he’ll likely win a floor vote to become the nation’s top law enforcement official, GOP Senate insiders said.
The Republicans will only hold 52 seats so how is this possible?
Trump’s Cabinet picks can’t be filibustered because Democrats unilaterally changed Senate rules three years ago to eliminate the 60-vote threshold for most nominations.
I had forgotten that when Harry Reid invoked the so-called nuclear option that it also applied to cabinet picks so apparently the Democrats will not be able to filibuster Jeff Sessions.
In defending this change to the filibuster rules Harry Reid basically said the Republicans should be happy because when they are in power this will help them. This is what he said:
“When the Repubicans are in power, these changes will apply to them as well. That’s simple fairness.”
I wonder if he feels the same way today…
malo periculosam libertatem quam quietum servitium
I’m sure Trump has a work around plan if the Democrats block his Cabinet appointments. The fake media will find every possible story to smear Sessions like they did last time he was appointed for judge by Bush.

But it makes me nervous he is looking at so many senators to put in his cabinet.

The one that bothered me the most was the Ayotte for Defense Secretary but it looks like that was only a rumor.

Made zero sense. No background that amounts to anything.

I wonder if Harry Reid is regretting this decision, he could have never seen this coming!

So then the lefties won’t be able to pull a Bork on Session”s nomination?

I’m sure they will have other tactics. Sen. Chuck has some plan up his sleeve. He was the leader of the Gang of 8 and those Republicans who swore aligence to him probably are still controled by him.

I would not put anything passed them, who knows what they have up their sleeves but I am sure it is something.
