Chuck Schumer says Donald Trump should replace Neil Gorsuch with a ‘mainstream nominee’

 The Democrats are still upset that the Republicans did not give Merrick Garland a confirmation hearing and they are taking it out on Neil Gorsuch. Honestly I do not blame them because in all likelihood I would probably, nay definitely, do the same thing if I were in their shoes.

  However, all they had to do was win the election and this would not be an issue. But of course they lost the election because they rigged the primary in order to nominate one of the least liked and least trustworthy candidates in modern political history. That is something they would like to forget…

  Chuck Schumer appeared on Meet the Press today and he said that Neil Gorsuch should be replaced by a more “mainstream nominee” if he cannot get the 60 votes needed for confirmation. Here is what he said:

“Let me make a proposal here to maybe break this problem that we have, okay? It looks like Gorsuch will not reach the 60-vote margin. So instead of changing the rules, which is up to Mitch McConnell and the Republican majority, why doesn’t President Trump, Democrats, and Republicans in the Senate, sit down, and try to come up with a mainstream nominee? Look, when a nominee doesn’t get 60 votes, you shouldn’t change the rules, you should change the nominee.

And let’s just take, give me one minute here, because this is important, let’s just look at the history, okay?”

“Our nominee was Merrick Garland, Mitch McConnell broke 230 years of precedent and didn’t call him up for a vote,” he continued. “It wasn’t in the middle of an election campaign, it was March.

  It is funny but I do not remember Chuck Schumer railing against Harry Reid when he invoked the nuclear option to confirm Barack Obama’s appointments when they could not receive the needed 60 votes–a move Harry Reid said the Republicans should thank him for if they ever regained power. (Let me be the first to say thank you.) There was no cry from the Democrats back then to change the nominee not the rules.

  The confirmation process is supposed to be about determining whether or not a candidate is qualified for the position and Neil Gorsuch is clearly qualified, the Democrats are merely opposing him for political reasons–something Chuck Schumer railed against when Merrick Garland was nominated by Barack Obama. 

  And as far as not having a nominee have a confirmation hearing being unprecedented, it is but only because the Democrats never had a chance to oppose a Bush appointee in his last year in office. In 2007 the very same Chuck Schumer was a leading voice in not allowing George Bush to have a Supreme Court Justice approved in his last year in office when he said:

“We should not confirm any Bush nominee to the Supreme Court, except in extraordinary circumstances,” Schumer, a New York Democrat, said in prepared remarks to the American Constitution Society, a liberal legal organization.

  Funny how his position changes depending on who is in power, isn’t it?
