Donald Trump authorizes William Barr to declassify FISA documents

May 24, 2019

I know I shouldn’t get my hopes up after watching the previous administration get away with running guns into Mexico and using private servers to transmit classified data, but I am still hopeful that somebody is going to pay for illegally spying on a Presidential candidate.

Much to the chagrin of Democrats William Barr has opened up an inquiry into the origins of the Russia investigation and, perhaps more accurately, the alleged FISA abuses that led to the investigation.

Late last night the President upped the anti on the investigation of the investigators when he granted William Barr more power, including the power to declassify the documents related to the FISA abuses. Here is more:

President Donald Trump on Thursday granted Attorney General William Barr new powers to review and potentially release classified information related to the origins of the Russia investigation, a move aimed at accelerating Barr’s inquiry into whether U.S. officials improperly surveilled Trump’s 2016 campaign.

Trump directed the intelligence community to “quickly and fully cooperate” with Barr’s probe. The directive marked an escalation in Trump’s efforts to “investigate the investigators,” as he continues to try to undermine the findings of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe amid mounting Democratic calls for impeachment proceedings.

I have to stop the quote right there before I continue. Note the bias in that paragraph where it says he is trying to “undermine the findings” of the Mueller report. This is a gross misrepresentation of what is going on. William Barr said there was no doubt the previous administration was spying on the Trump campaign and the only question about it was if it was justified or not and that is the goal of the new investigation. But there is no mention of that in that paragraph, it is only later in the article when it is briefly mentioned.

  Back to the quote:

Press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that Trump is delegating to Barr the “full and complete authority” to declassify documents relating to the probe, which would ease his efforts to review the sensitive intelligence underpinnings of the investigation.

Donald Trump has been threatening to declassify these documents for quite some time now and it looks like that process has been set in motion. I still believe Democrats may rue the day they began the fake Russia conspiracy theory.

I believe the Democrats would be wise to let it go at this point but the fact is they have too much time and political capital invested in this farce at this time and so in an effort to undermine the Presidency by winning in the court of public opinion they are painting themselves into a corner and William Barr is holding the brush.
