Judge blocks citizen application fee increases
As always seems to be the case when a new Trump administration immigration policy is set to be implemented, a Federal Judge has stepped in and stopped new fee increases for citizenship applications which were to go into effect this week. Here is more:
A federal court in San Francisco on Tuesday temporarily blocked the Trump administration from raising the cost of citizenship and other immigration applications, whose fees were set to increase at the end of the week.
The Department of Homeland Security issued the fee increases in July and said they were intended to help shore up the cash-strapped agency that processes most immigration applications.
Under the proposed fee increases, the cost of a citizenship application would have risen to $1,160 from $640, or more than 80%, and for the first time the U.S. would have charged a fee of $50 to file an asylum application. Most fee waivers for low-income immigrants would have been eliminated under the changes. A group of immigrant-advocacy organizations sued to stop the fee changes.
The argument can be made, and is understandable, that if a person is looking for legitimate asylum because their life is in danger they should not have to pay a fee. However, the fee increases which were put in place simply to cover the cost of the citizen application process would seem reasonable. If you want to become a citizen it seems obvious that you should have to pay the full processing fees. The Judge determined this was unfair to lower income applicants and therefor blocked the measure.
“If it takes effect, it will prevent vulnerable and low-income applicants from applying for immigration benefits, block access to humanitarian protections, and will expose populations to further danger,” Judge White, a George W. Bush appointee, wrote.
I have to say this decision coming from a Bush appointed Judge is not surprising, the former President was an open borders guy and appointed open borders Judges.

Anytime a judge gets a chance to stick their nose into into a government decision they just cannot help themselves… power is a dangerous thing and so many judges have a taste for it,

They like the power and I think they also like the spotlight, it is their chance to make a name for themselves and they just can’t resist the temptation.

Where in the Constitution does it say a jude has the power to interfere with the legislative or executive branch’s decisions? The judiciary is a bad joke. As Shakespeare said “time to hang the lawyers” but remember all judges are lawyers abet far worse.

This is all happening under progressive rationalizations in favor of economic opportunity. Save very few circumstances, people wishing to come to America need to pay their way. And please don’t lecture me on refugees unless you have plucked someone out of a mine field in GTMO, the South China Sea or from the streets of Mogadishu. Those refugee cases are handled in an entirely separate process. We are talking about people who want to come here to participate in the American enterprise and not sponge off of it. Fees need to cover costs. They must be reasonable and must be based upon some sort of desk top audit data to substantiate the costs. The opportunity to come here can never be free. You either do so by risking your life to help us in some dung heap third world country or you fork out cash. Semper Fi

I agree, it seems like somebody who wants to come here would not have a problem paying the cost of what it takes to process them.

My grandparents did so. They paid their costs and far more. They were required to have money in their pockets when they disembarked at Ellis and Angel Islands.
