Democrats do not have votes to end the filibuster

January 26, 2021

Over the last several years we have seen the filibuster eliminated for the confirmation of judges and cabinet positions and it was just assumed that as soon as one party had the chance the filibuster would be eliminated for legislative purposes as well. With the Democrats now in charge of both houses of the Congress it was thought that time was now, but it looks like two Democratic holdouts have ended that possibility. Here is more:

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell put the idea of abolishing the filibuster to rest, for now, mentioning the fact two Democrats confirmed that they would not vote to change the Senate rules.

“Today two Democratic Senators publicly confirmed they will not vote to end the legislative filibuster. They agree with President Biden’s and my view that no Senate majority should destroy the right of future minorities of both parties to help shape legislation,” McConnell said in a statement.

Democratic Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema will not support eliminating the filibuster and her mind “cannot be changed,” her spokesperson said Monday.

With Sinema coming out against abolishing the filibuster, it makes it highly unlikely it could happen, as Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin has also said he will not vote to do so.

Mitch McConnell is claiming victory as if he had something to do with this, but I think we all know what is going to happen in the end and I like to think Mitch McConnell is smart enough to realize it, although I cannot be sure. When push comes to shove and there is a stalemate on a key Democratic agenda item an offer will be made that these two holdouts cannot refuse, and in the unlikely event they still hold out Joe Biden does have a pen and a phone...

Surprise to me. Kyrsten Sinema is becoming the most conservative Senator to serve Arizona for the past 20 years. Who would have thunk it?

Lest we forget that democrat holdouts were bought off to vote in favor of Obamacare. Anyone believing these two cannot be bought off when the time comes, or even failing that possibly even a few rhinos well I have a toll booth on the Washington Bridge for sale.
