Apartment complex bans the American flag for being offensive

October 13, 2009

I understand that in some condo complexes and gated communities that there are restrictions on certain things– such as needing permission to install a flag pole. I don’t agree with this particular restriction but if you join a community and you agree to abide by the rules and one of those rules is a restriction on flagpoles that is just the way it goes.

However, this seems to be a different story altogether. Residents in an Albany, Oregon apartment complex are being told that they need to remove the United States flags that they are displaying on their vehicles. One person, whose son is in Iraq, flies a flag on his motorcycle to honor his son and all the others who serve in the military. Another resident has flown a United States flag on her car for eight years, she is now being told to take it down.

What makes this story even more repulsive is the reason why they are being told they can no longer fly their flags– it may be offensive. The ban goes so far as to outlaw flag stickers on cars. It is the image of the American flag in any form that is considered offensive.

that management told them the flags could be offensive because they live in a diverse community

This “diverse community” is in the United States, these diverse people are not so offended by the United States or our flag that they are willing to leave the country. Nobody has even claimed to be offended but the politically correct owner is afraid that it might offend somebody.

If the sight of the American flag does offend someone in the apartment complex fuck them. If they don’t like it they can get the fuck out. How’s that for offensive?

One resident summed it up best:

I just said to her ‘They’ll just have to get over it

Some elitist communities have gone over-board on the political correctness thing, but banning the flag sticker on cars and a small flag on a motor bike. The banning should be of those people who support such a thing. If some decided not to display a flag thats their right, but to try and prevent others—it just sucks. Liberals always, and I many always try to impose their ideas on the rest of us and I for one have had enough of these nut cases.

You got that right, liberals aren’t happy enough with following their beliefs, they want to impose their beliefs on everyone else.

I have this up too, with address and phone numbers of the complex AND the Corp that owns it… 😛

The American flag flies high off my front porch. I live in a “diverse” neighborhood. No problems here, so far anyway. Multiculturalism, gotta love it.

I honestly don’t understand why a diverse neighborhood of people who choose to live in America would be opposed to seeing the American flag in the first place. This arguement just doesn’t make sense to me other that the fact that political correctness has been drilled into this woman’s head for so long that she is just afraid to do or say anything that might offend someone.

Thank God I do not live in such a stupid place, but if they ever try something like that around here, there will be some very unkind words being said. Needless to say, the flags would stay up. This has got to be one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard of.

Let anyone try to take down my Colors flying proudly on my front porch, and I’ll show you some dead liberals slaughtered by a US Marine.

If the Flag of The United States of America being flown on American soil offends you, then feel free to exercise your right to get the hell outta this Country.

Any US Marine who slaughters liberals over the flag is a disgrace to the uniform.

Please don’t make such stupid and extreme threats, it makes you sound like a complete lunatic.

This apartment complex is clearly managed by complete idiots, but there’s no death penalty for idiots.

First, thanks to you and Sam for your service. While Sam’s comments may seeem over the top it shows us the level of respect and honor that those who feel the call to serve our great country feel within their hearts. To see people disrespect the symbol of the country that they chose to defend must be offensive beyond words to our veterans.

I wonder if anyone else noticed how bigoted it is for this apt. management to assume that anyone who is not caucasian and US born to automatically be offended. There’s a lot of people born in this country that hate it, in spite of the fact that we have more freedoms than any other country, and sadly we take them for granted. My flag will fly and I really don’t care what anyone thinks.

Wouldn’t ones right to display the American flag be protected under the 1st Amendment? I don’t understand how this is legal in any way. And if it were reversed, and people were being told they had to fly the American flag, the ACLU would be all over it. Where are they now?

Just found out that this issue has been solved and that the flags can fly. Bloggers such as you and others played a part in restoring sanity in this case. Keep up the good work.

This is certainly great news although I doubt that I had any part in the end result. It was an effort all across the blogoshere that changed this woman’s mind, if I played even a small part I am grateful.
      Thanks for the compliment.

I am sure that the collected effort over the internet and the outrage it sparked had everything to do with this situation being rectified. Its good to know that every once in a while the good guys still win one.

Well, the ban has been lifted, and ALL flags were banned, not just the American flag. Sports teams flags, any and all flags were banned, but the media likes to distort things, and make it sound like the AMERICAN flag was singled out, while every other flag in the Universe was allowed to fly.

I have always hated condo and apartment rules such as this, that why my hubby & I were ADAMANT when we bought our house that we would NOT be buying a house with an “association” and another layer of rules.

I think the apartments were way out of line telling people what they can put on their cars, but unfortunately, the landlord OWNS the building and CAN tell renters what they can attach to the building.

Also, why is this blog making it sound like the AMERICAN flag is being singled out, when the ban WAS on all flags, before the ban was lifted ????????

I DID admit that the owner of the complex has the right to ban certain things, such as putting up flag poles but does that give the owner of the complex the right to tell people what they can put on their vehicles? I don’t think so. The examples I used were of people who had flags on their cars, that seems to me to go well beyond an agreement that may have been sined about putting any flags on their condos.

A native Texan, I lived in Oregon for about 4 years. While there I was stunned by how seldom their state flag is displayed. The American flag was not displayed much either – an overall lack of pride in their state and country.
It’s a very sad thing that there are those who want to make the U.S. a non-nation.
I say kick their stinkin’ butts into shape. They want the freedoms that our flag represents, but they don’t want to give it honor.
