Harry Reid fights for Chinese green energy company represented by his son

August 4, 2012

According to this article Harry Reid has been pressuring NV Energy to purchase more green energy over the years in spite of the fact the company has already exceeded its green energy quota.

While George W Bush was president Harry Reid stopped a plan to build coal powered plants in Nevada because he said NV Energy didn’t do enough in the field of renewable energy:

Reid blocked plans to build coal-fired power plants in Nevada. He said in April on the “Nevada Newsmakers” show, “I don’t think NV Energy has done enough to allow renewable energy to thrive.”

This was an apparent attempt at forcing NV Energy to purchase green energy by limiting the company’s options. (More on that later) As I alluded to above, NV Energy had already surpassed its green energy quota and it appears as if the company has a legitimate reason for not wanting to provide more green energy–it is simply too expensive and the added costs would be passed on to the consumers.

Power costs are passed directly to consumers, and green energy currently costs more than power generated by coal-fired or natural-gas burning plants. State law mandates NV Energy buy power as cheaply as possible, except when it’s required to buy more-expensive green energy to meet state-mandated quotas

Nevada state law mandates that power companies provide power as cheaply as possible, the only exception being to meet its green energy quota. Because the green energy technology is not there yet it is more expensive than traditional energy, and because NV Energy has already exceeded its quota the company is under a state imposed mandate to provide the cheapest energy possible which eliminates the potential of buying more green energy even if the company wanted to.

That is not good enough for Harry Reid:

if “NV Energy wanted to do more with renewable energy, they could.”

So why is it that Harry Reid is pressuring NV Energy to purchase more expensive green energy which would hurt the very people Harry Reid claims he wants to help?

It might have something to do with the fact that Harry Reid played a role in recruiting the China based solar energy company, ENN Mojave Energy LLC, to build a billion dollar plant in Nevada and because NV Energy has not been willing to purchase power from ENN Mojave the demand hasn’t been there to justify building the plant.

Because state law mandates energy companies to provide its customers with the cheapest energy possible it appears as if by blocking the coal fired plants while promoting the more expensive solar powered plants that Harry Reid was trying to eliminate the competition and ensure that the more expensive energy was the only energy available thusly forcing NV Energy to purchase more expensive energy due to the lack of any viable alternative.

Brining  ENN Mojave to Nevada might explain why Harry Reid wants NV Energy to purchase more green power, but it doesn’t explain why he is so adamant about forcing higher energy prices on his constituents. But this does:

His son, Rory Reid, is one of the attorneys for the ENN Mojave Energy project

success for ENN in finding customers helps Rory Reid, and its failure could cost him a client. It’s an undeniable conflict that Harry Reid should keep in mind as he twists arms at the PUC and NV Energy, lest he earn himself an ethics complaint

On the surface it would appear as if Harry Reid put his son ahead of his constituents; he had a choice to make and he decided that his son’s career was more important than holding down the energy costs of his constituents and that is why he is turning up the heat on a company which has already exceeded its green energy quota.

  Crony capitalism at its worst.

Gee, I wonder if all of the outrageous remarks are to distract from this story? Two birds with one stone–if you count the Obama smoke bomb.

Maybe we need to see his tax returns to see if there is anything funny going on between he and the casinos.

We know this “green energy” is immature science. Maybe, someday, we will produce a system that works. But we don’t use it until it is practical. Unless of course you are pulling a scam, like this one.
