The Most ‘Inconvenient Truth’: According to U.N., Animals Raised for Food Generate More Greenhouse Gases Than All Cars and Trucks Combined

Norfolk, Va. — This morning, PETA sent a letter to former vice president Al Gore explaining to him that the best way to fight global warming is to go vegetarian and offering to cook him faux “fried chicken” as an introduction to meat-free meals. In its letter, PETA points out that Gore’s film, An Inconvenient Truth—which starkly outlines the potentially catastrophic effects of global warming and just won the Academy Award for “Best Documentary”—has failed to address the fact that the meat industry is the largest contributor to greenhouse-gas emissions.

In the letter, PETA points out the following:

· The effect that our meat addiction is having on the climate is truly staggering. In fact, in its recent report “Livestock’s Long Shadow—Environmental Issues and Options,” the United Nations determined that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined.

· Researchers at the University of Chicago have determined that switching to a vegan diet is more effective in countering global warming than switching from a standard American car to a Toyota Prius.

PETA also reminds Gore that his critics love to question whether he practices what he preaches and suggests that by going vegetarian, he could cut down on his contribution to global warming and silence his critics at the same time.

“The single best thing that any of us can do to for our health, for animals, and for the environment is to go vegetarian,” says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. “The best and easiest way for Mr. Gore to show his critics that he’s truly committed to fighting global warming is to kick his meat habit immediately.”

I would like to see the data and analysis from the UN, because I am indeed very concerned about global warming and the climate change crisis it has created. I would like to know what the components of that pollution are attributable to, i.e. what is the breakdown of the carbon from various sources.

Having said that, I have several observations. It seems PETA is trying to piggy back on right-wing attacks of Gore to promote their own agenda. It is harmful to our republic to enable right wing attacks. Our planet is in crisis and there are solutions which need to be implemented if civilization is to survive. Mr. Gore has done more to implement those solutions than any other person on the planet. Telling Al Gore what he needs to do to fight global warming is like giving advice to Mother Theresa about what needs to be done for the poor.

How about advising George W. Bush what HE can do to combat global warming. If PETA is SERIOUS about climate change, I would like to know what advice they have given to Bush and Congress.

Finally, while PETA makes some ecological and ethical arguments with which I agree, I believe they also have other positions (like opposing hunting) which are neither correct or pragmatic. I suspect they are simply trying to promote their own agenda of universal vegetarianism and that is a disservice to the planet, in my view.

Well, well, well “ALGOREDOTORG” – why should we take your comments about agendas seriously??
With a name like yours, we know that you have an agenda – to defend, promote and market Gore.
Gore was brilliant enough to find a tool (global warming) that would get him back into the limelight, make him some money and give him great celibrity status and political exposure. He did a brilliant job and he is a brilliant man – after all he did INVENT the INTERNET!!!
With a name like yours , why bring Bush into the fray? Why criticize PETA for their agenda when you clearly are only interested in your own agenda?
And by the way, there is nothing wrong with giving Mother Theresa advice about dealing with the poor. If the advice were constructive I am sure that she would have accepted it with grace. Why? Because she lived and believed in what she did and if anyone would have offered her advice to enhance her cause she would surely have listened to it with enthusiasm.
I suggest Al Gore do the same.
Please note – I have no agenda (unlike you). I am Canadian and have no connection to George Bush and no affilition to Peta or Mother Theresa.
