Iraqi Politicians are Stronger than American Politicians
I only wish the American politicians and American people were as strong as the Iraq people. Sadly we are not. America’s politicians have already said the war is lost, we can’t win. Someone needs to tell the Iraqis that. They seem to be much stronger than the politicians in Washington, and they are the ones in harm’s way.
Yet the Iraqi political class is showing a lot more courage than the American political class. They risk assassination. Our politicians risk electoral defeat. Yet it is our politicians who panic–and do so shamelessly and abjectly. And stupidly. Do the Republicans who want Bush to cut and run really think they would benefit if Iraq were to blow up, with U.S. troops helplessly standing by watching the slaughter, the full spectacle of American defeat unfolding before the American people?
There it is. Electoral defeat. The American politicians are more interested in getting elected than what is right for America. They would rather win re-election than do what is best for the country and fight the terrorists until they are defeated.
As for the Democrats, they are in a way less abject. Most of them simply believe the war is lost, or that it should be lost, and want to throw in the towel. The day after panicked Republicans descended on the White House, almost three-fourths of the House Democrats voted to begin withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq within 90 days. The rest of the Democratic caucus–with a handful of exceptions–embraced a slower-bleed defeat, presumably seeking a bit more political cover.
The key phrase here is that most Democrats believe the war is lost or should be lost. They have no faith in the American soldier, in fact they have nothing but disdain for the military unless they are providing humanitarian efforts that don’t have the United States interests in hand. Political cover in a time of war? Despicable.
Only one Democrat–now an “independent Democrat”–called them on their vote: Joe Lieberman. As the members of his party voted for defeat, he took to the Senate floor to plead for full funding of our troops: “Only a couple of months ago, the Senate confirmed a new commander to implement a new strategy in Iraq, General David Petraeus. That new strategy is now being implemented, and it is achieving some encouraging, if early, signs of success. . . . Yet, now many in Congress would pull the plug on this new strategy and thwart the work of our troops before they are given a fair chance to succeed. I am aware that public opinion has turned against the war in Iraq. . . . But leadership requires sometimes that we defy public opinion if that is what is necessary to do what is right for our country. . . . Al Qaeda itself has declared Iraq to be the central front of their larger war against our way of life. . . . Our judgment can be guided by the polls and we can withdraw in defeat. [But] no matter what we say, our enemy will know that America’s will has been broken by the barbarity of their bloodlust–the very barbarity we declare we are fighting, but from which we would actually be running.”
The senate confirmed Gen. Petraeus knowing that he was in favor of the troop surge, and then they decided to oppose the troop surge. Was this whole thing orchestrated by the Democrats to make them look good if the surge failed? I don’t know, but they confirmed a general who they knew was in favor of a troop surge and then opposed the same surge. It sounds like they were riding the fence to me.
It is George W. Bush’s historic mission to stand in the way of such a disgrace. And he can prevail. Surely this nation will not, at the end of the day, follow the path of defeat-embracing Democrats or poll-fearing Republicans

We have become soft, socially castrated and beaten down from the left. Sometimes I wonder if being nice hasn’t worked against us? Iraqis also fight now, talk later. Good post.

Thanks, unfortunately you are right, the American people have grown soft. We no longer have the resolve to fight for our beliefs. All the people that have fought and died for this country must be rolling over in their graves. It would make them sick to see the way America is now.

Interesting post. Though, people outside the land of America don’t appreciate what American politicians have done in either Iraq or Afghanistan. All the tragic incidents involving so-called ‘Islamic Terrorist’ (anyhow I don’t recall any teaching of Islam that says it’s OK to kill innocents) were acts of retaliation towards current Administration’s foreign policy. Don’t you think?

No, actually I don’t think they are retaliation because of George Bush’s foreign policies.
We were attacked on Sept 11th and it had nothing to do with our president’s policies. He was in office for less than one year.
As a matter of fact previous administration’s policies may have directly led to 9/11 because of their cowardice to confront the people who led these attacks:
1983 April 18, Beirut, Lebanon: U.S. embassy destroyed in suicide car-bomb attack; 63 dead, including 17 Americans. The Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility.
Oct. 23, Beirut, Lebanon: Shiite suicide bombers exploded truck near U.S. military barracks at Beirut airport, killing 241 marines. Minutes later a second bomb killed 58 French paratroopers in their barracks in West Beirut.Dec. 12, Kuwait City, Kuwait: Shiite truck bombers attacked the U.S. embassy and other targets, killing 5 and injuring 80.
1984Sept. 20, east Beirut, Lebanon: truck bomb exploded outside the U.S. embassy annex, killing 24, including 2 U.S. military.
Dec. 3, Beirut, Lebanon: Kuwait Airways Flight 221, from Kuwait to Pakistan, hijacked and diverted to Tehran. 2 Americans killed.1985
June 14, Beirut, Lebanon: TWA Flight 847 en route from Athens to Rome hijacked to Beirut by Hezbollah terrorists and held for 17 days. A U.S. Navy diver executed.Oct. 7, Mediterranean Sea: gunmen attack Italian cruise ship, Achille Lauro. One U.S. tourist killed. Hijacking linked to Libya.
Dec. 18, Rome, Italy, and Vienna, Austria: airports in Rome and Vienna were bombed, killing 20 people, 5 of whom were Americans. Bombing linked to Libya.1986
April 2, Athens, Greece:A bomb exploded aboard TWA flight 840 en route from Rome to Athens, killing 4 Americans and injuring 9.April 5, West Berlin, Germany: Libyans bombed a disco frequented by U.S. servicemen, killing 2 and injuring hundreds.
1988Dec. 21, Lockerbie, Scotland: N.Y.-bound Pan-Am Boeing 747 exploded in flight from a terrorist bomb and crashed into Scottish village, killing all 259 aboard and 11 on the ground. Passengers included 35 Syracuse University students and many U.S. military personnel. Libya formally admitted responsibility 15 years later (Aug. 2003) and offered $2.7 billion compensation to victims’ families.
1993Feb. 26, New York City:bomb exploded in basement garage of the World Trade Center, killing 6 and injuring at least 1,040 others. In 1995, militant Islamist Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and 9 others were convicted of conspiracy charges, and in 1998, Ramzi Yousef, believed to have been the mastermind, was convicted of the bombing. Al-Qaeda involvement is suspected
1995Nov. 13, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: car bomb exploded at U.S. military headquarters, killing 5 U.S. military servicemen.
1996June 25, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia: truck bomb exploded outside Khobar Towers military complex, killing 19 American servicemen and injuring hundreds of others. 13 Saudis and a Lebanese, all alleged members of Islamic militant group Hezbollah, were indicted on charges relating to the attack in June 2001.

A federal grand jury had indicted 22 men in connection with the attacks, including Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden, who remained at large.

Why do you think all these unnecessary and unholiness acts happened in the first place?
I’m really interested discussing about this subject matter since I was in the States during the 9/11 attack while studying in Cleveland. Till now I still condemn the whole idea of ‘jihad war’ or ‘holy war’ cause there’s no such thing as it in Islam. Allah only allows you to use sword (war) if only you are attacked upon. And the war is not about to kill everybody who are non-Muslims but just to make sure those who make the first move to make war against the Muslims will not be a threat to them anymore (though the aggression option will be the last resort). The innocents including children and women should be untouched.
Nonetheless, the world now have to many psychopaths and too stupid to understand the whole concept of why God creates us multiraces

I’m not saying all Muslims believe in Jihad of that all Muslims are bad, but there is a certain segment of Muslims who want to destroy the west. They believe they are justified in doing so. This segment is also able to recruit new Jihadists to join the fight, this is what we are fighting now. George Bush has gone out of his way to make sure that this war kills as few innocent Muslims as possible. That is why the war is taking so long. If we just went in and bombed the hell out of them we could have ended this war rather quickly, but America does not want to ruin it’s reputation by killing all Muslims when we just want to target the Jihadists that want to destroy us.

Yes, and I didn’t say that you say all Muslims believe in jihad. Just that I want to know your side of what started all these crap?
