John Edwards Denies there is a War on Terror

May 24, 2007

Democrat John Edwards Wednesday repudiated the notion that there is a “global war on terror,” calling it an ideological doctrine advanced by the Bush administration that has strained American military resources and emboldened terrorists.

In a defense policy speech he planned to deliver at the Council on Foreign Relations, Edwards called the war on terror a “bumper sticker” slogan Bush had used to justify everything from abuses at the Abu Ghraib prison to the invasion of Iraq.

“We need a post-Bush, post-9/11, post-Iraq military that is mission focused on protecting Americans from 21st century threats, not misused for discredited ideological purposes,” Edwards said in remarks prepared for delivery. “By framing this as a war, we have walked right into the trap the terrorists have set—that we are engaged in some kind of clash of civilizations and a war on Islam.”

This man cannot be president. I have to believe he is just pandering to his base, there is no way he can believe this. A bumper sticker slogan to justify abuses in Abu Ghraib?

He says we need a post 9/11 mission not misused for dicredited ideological puposes. Has anyone told radical Muslims that their ideology has been discredited? No, but George Bush’s ideology has been? John Edwards would rather believe the enemy than the president of the United States.

It sounds to me like John Edwards’ post 9/11 mission would be alot like the pre 9/11 policy of pretending the terrorists don’t exist. We all know how well that worked. I can’t believe anyone can forget what happened and would be willing to make the same mistakes that allowed it to happen.

That was my first thought as well. Anyone who really believes this or even has the audacity to say it cannot be president. Its scary to think that John Edwards is supposed to be a “main stream” Democrat running for President and yet he believes there is no war on terror and he believes that Israel is the greatest threat to world peace. Can we say out of touch with reality?????

Typical ‘patridiot’ twisting things around again. Edwards never said ‘terrorists don’t exist’. He said there is no real global war on terror, a BIG difference.

We are not hunting down terrorist cells around the globe, we are focusing all our forces in Iraq. Iraq did not even attack us, most of the 9/11 terrorists were Saudi Arabian. Iraq had no WMD’s and Hussein had no links to Al Qaeda.

Edwards is saying Bush uses the phrase ‘war on terror’ to justify his reckless policies and own agenda, and guess what all the frighten blind patriots like you fall for it.

Yes of course there are terrorist but to invade Iraq {under false pretenses} to solve global terrorism is either a big scam or the decisions of a very dumb man.

LMC, isn’t it ironic that Mike brands us as patridiots, and acuses us of being blind patriots when Sept 11th wasn’t enough to open his eyes?

I can see the distinction between “War on Terror” the phrase and legitimate counterterrorism that we’ve been engaged in for decades. The former has been abused by the administration to justify a whole host of abuses (unconstitutional wiretapping, a reckless invasion of Iraq, torture, etc.), the latter bore fruit with this latest JFK terror bust. The former is a unwinnable war against an unknowable enemy, the latter accurately describes what we’re actually doing.

Nowhere in there did Edwards say that terrorism doesn’t exist or isnt a threat.
