Obama says President Bush Should not be Impeached

This is not going to sit well with the left in this country. Today Obama said:

“I think you reserve impeachment for grave, grave breeches, and intentional breeches of the president’s authority,” he said.

All this time I thought the left was telling us that the president overstepped his authority. They have told us that he has trampled the constitution with the Patriot Act. That he is spying on innocent Americans. Now Barack says we shouldn’t impeach him because he should only be impeached for intentional breeches of presidential authority. That is exactly what the Democrats have been claiming all along.

So why would Obama say this? Did he just slip, not realizing what he said? Or does he believe the president hasn’t done anything that goes beyond his authority?

“There’s a way to bring an end to those practices, you know: vote the bums out,” the presidential candidate said, without naming Bush or Cheney. “That’s how our system is designed.”

This is the first thing I have heard Obama say that I agree with, although it is unbecoming of a presidential candidate to call the incumbent president a bum. The system was set up to vote out people you don’t agree with, not criminalize people who have differing opinions than you.

Maybe Obama is starting to realize that his fellow candidates are going way way too far into leftist extremism (as exhibited by the latest debate). Maybe he realizes that he would have a better chance of winning the primaries if he lost some of the extremist behavior and took a more level-headed and moderate approach.

Of course, I could be wrong, but if he were smart it would be the best thing to do to stand out above the rest of his lunatic candidates.

neither. I think it’s a calculated position. the American public don’t want to hear about impeachment and find candidates who spout such talk as unappealing. plus, he already has enough clout among the nutroots so he doesn’t have to pander as much now.

You both make good points. This is a calculated position and does set him apart from the other candidates.
Usually during a primary you play to your base, then move to the center in the general election. He must feel he has enough support from the left to move center already to try to get those votes.
The farther left the other candidates go, the more sane he looks.
