New Hampshire Tax Protesters in Stand-Off With Federal Marshals part 11

July 30, 2007

Rumors had spread across the internet over the weekend that there were shots being fired at Ed and Elaine Brown’s house. There were massive calls from across the country to 911 causing a second dispatcher to come in to help handle the calls. Authorities have denied the rumors.

U.S. Marshal Steve Monier said yesterday that no law enforcement officers were at the Browns’ residence over the weekend.

“I don’t know anything about it,” Monier said. “It’s not us, we’re not there.”

Residents of Plainfield also denied hearing any gunshots.

Plainfield residents living near the Browns said there were no disturbances Saturday night, Gillens said.

“It’s a complete fabrication,” he said. “There was absolutely no report from anyone up there that there were fireworks or firearms or anything like that.”

Supporters on the Brown’s residence are also claiming that someone outside was trying to provoke a violent confrontation by shaking a trailor that some supporters are staying in.

Brown supporters also claimed someone had been physically shaking the trailer that houses Jim Hobbs, who is staying on the Browns’ property, and theorized that federal agents were trying to provoke a violent clash.

None of this has been confirmed, and it appears that the beat goes on. This story cannot have a happy ending.

“This is it. This is it,” Riley said during the interview, breathing heavily. “This is the beginning€¦ Enough is enough.” Riley said he’s prepared to die for the Browns’ cause. “I don’t know what else to say. I’m lost for words. I’m sweating bullets. I’m wrapped in bulletproof vests, I’ve got helmets on, and I’m sweating bullets. I’ve got a guy in the tower. We’re ready to go.”

Rumors??? Doesn’t a statement or story have to be UNsubstantiated hearsay to qualify as a rumor? I heard Dannys’ statement. He is there. No matter the source or motive for shots being fired the fact that an individual on the scene clearly heard them elevates it above rumor status.
    Now that having been said.
If I may speculate for just a moment… My first impression upon hearing and reading what had happened was that the feds were “shaking the bushes” so to speak to test and gauge the quality and nature of the response, with the additional psych benefit of shaking nerves. If the culprits were really lucky, (or unlucky – depending how you look at it), they would have succeeded in provoking a violent reaction and gotten a more ligitimate sounding excuse to get law enforcement envolved anew. When this is done it’s ALMOST always a prelude to the real thing. Whether or not this is the case will become more clear – probably in the near future.
