Kingston Days in New Hampshire Meets Politics

I live in the town of Kingston, New Hampshire. Every year on the first weekend of August we have a little fair called Kingston days. People rent spaces and sell nic-nacs and trinkets. Kingston sells souvenir t-shirts and sweatshirts. People set up booths and sell pizza, dogs, french fries, and eveyone just enjoys themselves. There is an antique car show on Sunday. That is my two boys favorite part of the fair.

This is a great time to just get outside with the family, maybe see neighbors, and get away from reality and politics for a few hours. Until this year. I was walking around today at the fair, having a good time, and then there it was. Someone had a booth set up for Hillary Clinton. I looked in disbelief, I had to be seeing things as I had never seen anything political set up during Kingston Days before, but there is was. As I walked by the kid, and I do mean kid, he was probably just old enough to vote if he was old enough to vote, asked me if I wanted a button. I just sort of laughed and replied no. He also smiled a little because he could tell by the way I answered there was no way in hell I would ever touch something like that.

So there I was with one of my sons trying to enjoy some politics free time and I still couldn’t get away from it. I don’t even care so much that the Hillary table was there, set up by a Hillary supporter. I believe everyone who is eligible to vote should do so, regardless of who you support, I understand people have differing opinions. The low voter turnout rates are embarrasing. But I did start to feel like something may be changing in my town. That is what started to bother me. Kingston is still a fairly conservative town. Kingston residents voted for incumbent Republican representitve Jeb Bradley in his losing bid for re-election to Carol Shea-Porter.

The town directly to the south of Kingston is Plaistow, which is right on the Massachusetts border. Over the last several years Plaistow has become increasingly liberal and I am beginning to fear they are coming north.

Kingston Days are held on a field, called the plains, that runs in between to streets, Main Street and Church Street with four or five roads that intersect the two streets. It is probably 100 feet wide at the widest. On the other side of Main Street and Church Street there are residences and a couple of small buisnesses. During Kingston Days some people park on the part of the plains that is too small for anything to be happening at. Other people park on the side of the road toward the plains, and still others park on the side of the road that the residences are on. This has been acceptable parking for many, many years. Of course you have to pull slightly onto the lawns of the owner’s property, but this has never been a problem in our small community. Until this year.

In the recent past, a house was sold across from the plains. There is often a car parked there with a Denis Kucinich bumper sticker. I don’t remember if they had lived there for the last Kingston Days or not.

Now it was time to leave and my son and I jumped into my truck and started to drive home. I noticed several people, including young children holding signs in front of their house. The Denis Kucinich house. As I drove by I read the signs. They were no parking signs and the children were standing next to the road holding the signs making it impossible for anyone to park there. I also noticed the grumpy, miserable look on the adult’s faces. I began to wonder “what makes these people so miserable that they can’t even have a good time during this little fair?”, and” is it really sooo annoying seeing other people having a good time?” They would rather stand out there all pissed off than walk across the street and have fun. Is it really that much of an inconvenience to them to have people park there? No it is not. It comes with the territory and is only two full days long.

Rush Limbaugh often says liberals are miserable people and they want everyone else to be miserable. I thought to myself that this is the second example I have seen that proves Rush is right. I would share the first example, but it really isn’t that interesting.

These people standing in front of their house with their miserable looks on their faces actually began to agrivate me more than having to see a political table set up at a fair that was supposed to celebrate our town. The fact that these people could look across the street and see all the happiness and families enjoying themselves and still feel nothing but resentment really pisses me off.

It just shows you the true mindset of the liberal. It is really all about themselves and their convenience. They pretend to care about everyone, but it is all about themselves, what can you do for me?

I just hope these are two incidents are not representative of the direction that Kingston will be moving in the future.

Now that I have written this I have to let it go or else they will have accomplished the goal that Rush says they have of trying to make me(and you) miserable.

They won’t get me. Don’t let them get you.
