Obama Vows to Raise Social Security Taxes

September 23, 2007

Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., is considering a major tax hike on the rich to shore up the nation’s Social Security system.

I’ve said it before, and I will say it again, according to the Democrats if you work for a living you are rich. Obama’s plan would raise taxes on those making $97,000 and above. While that may sound like a great idea, just think about that. If a husband and wife each work and they have four children and their income is $100,000 that is rich. Does that sound rich to you? It doesn’t to me. I think, at least in the Northeast, that they are just getting by. Yet Obama will raise your taxes. Congratulations, you are rich! How does it feel? It must feel great on two counts. First, that you are rich. Second, that your hard earned money will go to help others.

At least, and I can’t believe I am about to say this, John Edwards seems to understand that a family earning $97,000 isn’t necessarily rich.

“I do think we need to have a bubble above $97,000, probably up to about $200,000 so we don’t raise taxes on middle-class families,” Edwards

So right there Edwards admits that a family earning $97,000 is a middle class family. And all along I thought that a family earning $100,000 was rich.

A leading anti tax group added the following:

“With their proposals to raise Social Security taxes, it appears that John Edwards and Barack Obama are engaged in competition to see who can wreak more havoc on the economy,” said Club for Growth spokeswoman Nachama Soloveichik. “Obama comes out the winner with his proposal to raise Social Security taxes on more Americans than Edwards proposed in his plan. But make no mistake: While Obama’s plan is worse, both plans would significantly increase America’s tax burden; devastate the economy, and turn Social Security into a full-fledged welfare program.”

The bottom line is, it doesn’t matter what Democrat is elected president, the working/middle class is going to have their taxes raised, but at least we can take solace in the fact that we now know we are rich.

I’d say that a family (even with 4 kids) making $100,000 a year is rich.

How would you describe a family (with 3 kids) making $35,000 a year? I know how I would: prevalent.

Woah there. I’m no fan of Social Security, but you have greatly misrepresented the facts in your first paragraph:

If a husband and wife each work and they have four children and their income is $100,000 that is rich.

If a husband and wife each work and have a combined income of $100K, they are nowhere near the Social Security base (assuming relative income equality). The base is $97,500 PER PERSON not per couple. So if the husband and wife are earning $50K each, they have a long way to go before Obama’s proposed increase would affect them.

Steve, You know I am very old..one thing I learned that is a constant. The libs love to control the poor because they need their votes. If you work hard to succeed, you are going to “pay through your nose” because, as ususal they want to kill the American spirit.

You aren’t THAT old, but you hit the nail on the head, that is what the Democrats do, control the poor and tax the workers. All the while saying they support the working class.

If you don’t know how payroll taxes work, don’t write about them. The cap is per person, not per household.

Six figures may not be rich but 100K is the approximate start point for “upper middle class”. About 1 in five households have a six figure income. About half of all households make less than 50K/year.

Most of the middle class is unaware of the cap, because it doesnt affect them. They should not be misled into thinking that raising the cap will cost them.

Ohplease, I was corrected on that mistake 7 MONTHS AGO, if you read the comments, you are late to the party. But that is okay, I welcome you.
As far as how payroll taxes go I can tell you how they work. I work hard for 45-55 hours a week, my wife works even harder than I do. The government then reaches into our hard earned money and takes about 30% to give to someone else. Someone who should be supporting themselves, someone who does not deserve my hard earned money more than I do, if that person wants more money they should either get another or better job.It isn’t my job to support them. I could better provide for my family if I had all, or just more of the money that I actually earned.

liberalism is indeed a mental disorder bullets are the cure. and than the tax rebates you don’t get one because you made too much. so were gonna give it to freeloader over her he made diddly and paid no taxes but he could really use your money . and don’t even get me started on the new way to screw us even more an earned income tax they are trying to pass , sounds ok right except for once again the old sliding scale lets see how many of these freeloaders would vote for it if they had to cough up another huge chunk of money just because some bums want more and it don’t really effect them.

Well you are wrong. if you live in a major city you cannot live off of 100,000 a year with four kids.
