Clinton and Obama Want to Leave the Mexican Border Open

February 23, 2008

In last week’s Democrat debate both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama said that they don’t think the United States should build the 700 foot wall at the Mexican border. This despite the fact that a strong majority of Americans want the wall built.

This is what Clinton said:

“there may be limited places where it would work. But let’s deploy more technology and personnel, instead of the physical barrier.”

Here is Obama:

“This is an area where Senator Clinton and I almost entirely agree,” said Obama. “I think that the key is to consult with local communities, whether it’s on the commercial interests or the environmental stakes of creating any kind of barrier.”

I am getting really tired about hearing about this virtual wall. Put up the physical wall first, that is what Americans want. What is so hard to understand about that? We can then use whatever technology you want to monitor the border.

This article then goes on to mention that both Clinton and Obama voted for the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which authorized the border fence.

So what is Hillary’s excuse for being for the wall before she was against it?

“I think when both of us voted for this, we were voting for the possibility that where it was appropriate and made sense, it would be considered,” said Clinton. “But as with so much, the Bush administration has gone off the deep end, and they are unfortunately coming up with a plan that I think is counterproductive.

Typical, blame Bush. She “thought” that the whole wall wouldn’t be built, that only part would be. She voted for the wall but President Bush isn’t correctly using the authority she helped give him. This  excuse is basically the same excuse she gave for authorising the use of force in Iraq. Sure, she authorised it, but she didn’t think he would use it?

 As for Obama:

“And so I will reverse that policy,” Obama said. “As Senator Clinton indicated, there may be areas where it makes sense to have some fencing. But for the most part, having border patrolled, surveillance, deploying effective technology, that’s going to be the better approach.”

He will stop the fence. But he might build some. Once again Obama can’t be nailed down on a position. Well, other than Bush is wrong. He opposes the wall because Bush authorised it.

The immigration problem in this country is my biggest issue in the upcoming election. I think it goes hand in hand with terrorism, I don’t see how we can fight terrorism around the globe and still leave our borders open, basically inviting terrorists across the border. This is why I can’t in good conscience vote for Clinton, Obama, or McCain for president. All three are so wrong on the immigration problem it is almost criminal what they would do to this country as president.

I don’t think that any sane American would go to another country, and just stay there without going through proper channels to get dual citizenship. Why is it OK here? I say we put up a huge prison fence, razor wire, electricity, everything. Too damn bad. The “technology” only works if people are keeping track of it. Yeah, that’ll happen. Do we need to look up illegal in the dictionary? @#$%&*!!!

    Standard scenario under their watch:

“Hey, look at the cameras!! 50 some are running across the boarder, quick get in the jeeps!!”

    15-40 minute drive later…

“What a surprise, they are all gone now. What a good system this is.”

At least we’d be better able to calculate how many are running across the border.

Better yet, don’t build a fence. Line the border with wildlife preserves and stock them up!! Want to run across? Press your luck against the lions, wolves, snakes and more!! Whoohoo!! Just like Frogger!!

Or build a wall of Taco Bells w/ food and drink laced with diarrhea inducing drugs. Give a new meaning to “(getting the) Run(s) to (on) the Border”

I THINK THAT WE SHOULD ALL NOT BE PREJUDICE.CANT WE ALL JUST LIVE IN PEACE AND WHERE WE COULD ALL WORK TOGETHER. THE MORE YOU TAKE OUT MEXICANS, THE MORE THE ECONOMY GOES DOWN. I WISH THIS WORLD WOULDN’T BE SO BAD.I LIKED THE YEARS 2003-2005 BETTER. THIS IMMIGRATION THING HAS TO STOP. SOME PEOPLE HERE ACTUALLY WORK,PAY TAXES, AND HAVE A GOOD FAMLIY. I DONT THINK YOU SHOULD TAKE ALL THAT AWAY.

You don’t have a problem with someone who comes here illegally taking that job you mentioned away from someone who is here legally? The illegals that are working are taking away jobs from Americans, and legal immigrants. How is that okay?

Personally, I think if we’re serious about not having illegal immigrants take jobs from Americans, a wall is really pointless in the long run. That doesn’t stop the people who fly in from Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world and just stay. Secondly, the Mexican-US border is peanuts compared to the US-Canadian border.

I’ve never worked at a job in the US where I was not required to show proof of citizenship (except at a fast food place as a high school student). In all my “skilled labor” work as a white collar employee, I’ve had to show proof and go through a background check. So really, what’s going on is unskilled labor being done by illegal immigrants. These aren’t glamourous jobs that Americans want, but that’s beside the point. Placing the onus on EMPLOYERS will nip this problem in the bud.

If no one will hire illegal immigrants then America won’t look so appealing, will it? No demand, no supply (illegal immigrants). People respond to incentive!

following up on my last point, I don’t believe America as represented by the ruling class (employers) really cares about illegal immigrants. This is why we will never see real change. I read in the NYTimes a while back about a town that reversed it anti-illegal immigrant law. Why? Businesses were hurt and Americans suffered economically in that town (less tenants to pay rent, etc). Even though we don’t like to admit, these people are generating income for lots of folks whose income will dry up when they are gone. So I don’t see this as black and white….fence vs. no fence. I think we need a real discussion about how to enforce the laws we have and also have more people come here through legal channels.

You make a couple of good points. We (myself included) focus much more attention on the southern border than the northern border, and as you said people can fly here and never leave. When I think immigration I thing Mexico first but their are many more aspects to the problem.
I agree with another point you made whole heartedly, and that is punishing people who hire the illegals. If nobody is willing to hire illegals because of the heavy penalies that should be imposed on them, many of them will go home.
Now, if America were to eliminate permanent lifetime welfare benefits to people who are capable of earning a living perhaps some of those non glamourous jobs would be taken by Americans.

very true, mrpinkeyes. Able-bodied people should work and not be dependent on the state. I believe we are all responsible for ourselves and if we can’t do it on our own, well, isn’t that what family is for?

This reminds of something a friend told me recently, many people think they are too good for low wage jobs. I tend to agree with that analysis and think its a cultural problem.

It’s very sad to see so much negativaty about the Mexican border. It is true the U.S. is less concerned about the Canadian border. It makes me wonder is it prejudice against the Mexican Natives, against the poor or both? Canada is wealthier than Mexico. Not only that it’s also true people from other countries such as Russia, Europe, Australia, etc. can fly in and out of the country so simply with out many questions. Or they even just stay in America. And they too can be drug dealers, sex offenders, etc.Because being a drug dealer, sex offender, etc is not prejudice it can be anyone anywhere. We already have a huge problem with that here in the U.S. It’s NOT JUST THE MEXICANS!!
MEXICANS ARE VERY HARD DEDICATED WORKERS. They know what it is to be hungry for days, they know how it is to see they’re children suffer, they know what poverity is, they know they want a comfortable life. And those who are willing to work here in the U.S. and are doing so to provide for themselves and their family will be TRUE TO THE U.S. and follow all the guidelines required to work here.
The U.S. is here to help others, it is the Land of the Free GOD did not build a wall to segregate us.
If you really don’t want Mexican Natives to come over here.. than do your part send food to the poor in Mexico, donate clothes, donate time to help rebuild their homes.. LOVE AS GOD LOVES
God Bless you all with a compassionate heart.

I have no problem with people who come here legally to work. You are right about one point though, too many Americans don’t want to work. They would rather collect wefare, if we end the permanenet welfare system these Americans would then have to take the jobs that the illegals have.
