Democrat Proposes 50 Cent Gas Tax Increase

March 20, 2008

Democrats claim that the middle class is worse off than ever before. Democrats claim that more people are living paycheck to paycheck than ever before. Democrats also claim that gas prices are crippling most Americans. Democrats also claim that they care more about the middle class than Republicans. So, how do Democrats show us how much they care about the rising cost of gas?

A Michigan congressman ( Democrat John Dingell) wants to put a 50-cent tax on every gallon of gasoline to try to cut back on Americans’ consumption.

They propose raising the price of gas to force us to stop driving so much. How is that for compassion? The government is already making windfall profits on gas and oil through taxes, but it is not enough. They know that Americans need to drive and won’t cut back no matter the cost, so this is just a way to raise more money for the coming liberal social programs that are waiting in the wings if Democrats take back the white house in November.

Democrats don’t give a damn about rising gas prices, if they did they would propose a reduction in the federal gas tax. Instead they see a necessity that they can tax and they know Americans will have no choice but to pay it.

And you know what? They may get away with it. According to a poll found in this article:

The poll, scheduled to be released on Thursday, shows 48 percent don’t support paying even a penny more, 28 percent would pay up to 50 cents more, 10 percent would pay more than 50 cents and 8 percent would pay more than a dollar.

While 48% are opposed to paying any more gas tax, a majority of people are willing to pay more for gas. This is bewildering to me. Most liberals blame President Bush’s close ties with oil companies for the reason the price of gas is so high. Many Americans even believe that the president can manipulate oil prices. Yet they are willing to give more to the government? I find those numbers hard to believe. Evidently so does Democrat John Dingell:

While Dingell’s idea will likely lie dormant until after the 2008 election, the idea of carbon taxes is not. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain all support some type of system that either directly or indirectly will raise prices to penalize polluters.

Dingell is smart enough to save his tax increase until after the election. McCain, Obama, and Hillary are not.

If middle class Americans think they have it bad now, wait until we are paying the carbon taxes and the increased gas taxes that loom around the corner. And lets not forget the Bush tax cuts that are set to expire.

That is how Democrats will “take care” of us. Thanks, but no thanks. I don’t need your “help.”

That’s not a very good idea (and I’m a Democrat). We’d be better off investing in public transportation and high speed rail so people don’t have to spend so much money on gas. Give people a reason to use less gas and I think they will, especially with how expensive it is now.

hmmm, this is a tough one. Part of me says raising prices IS an excellent way to curb consumption in that it would force people towards more fuel-efficient cars. That’s what happens here in Canada. Fuel is very expensive and you don’t see every other person driving fuel-inefficient cars like SUVs.

On the other hand, I also know from having lived in the ‘burbs that driving is the only way to get to work, the grocery store, school, etc. for the majority of people. So this would really really hurt.

I’m inclined to think that maybe we should try it. People will think twice about which car to buy if they knew it would have a significant effect on their wallet. Short term pain, long term gain? This is not the right time to try this sort of thing, though. Then again, I can’t think of any “ideal” time. We need to convince auto-makers to make more fuel-efficient cars. They won’t do this if they know people will buy fuel-inefficient cars.

If the gas tax went up fifty cents, the price of gasoline would still be way under the true cost to the environment and society. Americans are only five percent of the world’s population, but consume twenty five percent of the world’s resources. There are poor people who live in remote villages in Africa, China and South America who spend all day scrounging for food. They will never see a car in their lifetime, let alone own one. Instead of griping about gas prices, we should thank the diety of our choice for being so fortunate to live in this country in the first place.

Mike is the poster child for white liberal guilt. Adults who have things and do well for themselves do so because they went to school, learned things, worked hard. Driving a car is not a privilege as much as it is a necessity. If a person has the means, they should drive any kind of damn car they want. The idea that we should have a gas tax to help the environment will not fly, period. Two words that I will undoubtedly repeat, CAPITALISM & MERITOCRACY– These are two of the things that make America the land of the free.

Sorry phil, your comment was way off topic, it had to go.
It isn’t up tp the government to try to curb consumption. That is one of my problems with this, you don’t say. People will curb consumption on their own if they need to.
Deb is right about Mike, he shows us the guilt that liberals have made him feel for living in the greatest country in the world.

Well said Pohox, it isn’t the government’s job to tell us how gas and oil we should use.

Thank you democrats (me being one) for the care and compassion…. right!! I live in a rural area, (30 miles from town & my job), no public trans., no car pooling, etc. Unless the raccoons can give me a ride to work, my car is the only tool I have to work. Work is the only way to provide my family with food, medical care, etc. If that tax passes, I will be forced to quit and go on welfare. Nice touch since I really do want a job. What I am trying to say is if that happens the democrats will get what they want, less drivers and more people the goverment can support. God bless.

Are they nuts? Are they trying to make the recession worse? I drive a suv, only because the city and city workers are lazy and blow that money on useless crap (like encrypted radios from motorola), so they underbudget for winter. It gets worse every year.
