Note to Barack Obama: Michelle is Fair Game

May 19, 2008

Barack Obama has warned the Republicans to lay off of his wife. This was in response to an ad that was running in which Michelle Obama’s words were used and compared with down to earth Americans who disagree with her.

Michelle Obama is the one who injected herself into the presidential race and in doing so she made herself fair game. Michelle Obama is the person who admitted that she was never proud of America until her husband had a more than realistic chance at becoming president. Michelle Obama is the person who said that Americans were ignorant. She is the one who said we hang onto stereotypes and misconceptions to justify our ignorance. In doing so she became fair game.

Michelle Obama is allowed to smear Americans who do not agree with her husband’s policies and we are not supposed to fight back. This seems to be becoming a trend in the Obama campaign. Whenever someone points out a position that Obama has that a person disagrees with, that person is said to be attacking Obama. God forbid that someone speaks out against a politician’s viewpoints. It is called debating the issues, yet Obama portrays it as a personal attack.

Michelle Obama injecting herself into the race is no different than Bill Clinton injecting himself into the presidential race. Bill Clinton made an ass out of himself during the campaign and probably single handidly cost Hillary the nomination, and that was widely debated and discussed. As it should be. He made himself the story and so it is justifiable to use whatever he said against his wife. The same goes for Michelle Obama. She has made herself the story and as such America can debate and discuss her and whether they believe they want her as first lady. There is nothing wrong with debating her comments, if she or Barack didn’t want to debate what she said, she shouldn’t have said anything.

Just as former President Bill Clinton learned, when you become the story you can’t necessarily control the story.

 Michelle Obama is fair game.

Once he determines that she should campaign for him all bets are off , she becomes an issue.

I disagree on this just like I don’t think Chelsea is fair game. This is a race between Obama and McCain (presumably). What next? Attack ads on something Obama’s daughter said? If McCain’s daughter gives speeches for her dad will people run ads against her?

    Is that so,

I both agree and disagree with you on this. The Democrat race was between Obama and Hilary. It should have stayed between them just like it should stay between Obama and McCain.

However, there is a line you do not cross if you do not want the feedback. If you open your mouth and jump into the mosh pit that is a political election campaign, you better be ready for it to come back at you. If she didn’t want the attention, then you be the supportive family member that just waves and says Hi.

She opened her mouth and made her statements jumping into the middle of the campaign. That makes her fair game like anyone else who jumps in the middle. In or out, you can’t have it both ways. Is Chelsea fair game? If she jumped in the mosh pit, then yes. If not, then no.

Same thing goes for the other kids of the candidates. If the candidate is looking out for them, he / she should request they only say “No comment, talk to my Dad / Mom he / she’s running I’m not.”

I agree with Gary, I would normally consider her off limits, but once she injected herself into the story I think she opened herself up for critism.
I do think it was in bad taste for the press to ask Chelsea about her father’s affairs. But I don’t think it was going too far to attack former president Clinton because he made himself the story when he began injecting race into the primaries.
