California Becomes the First State to Ban Trans Fats

California has officially become the first state to ban trans fats. Rino Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the bill into law last week. Arnold, who had no problem putting steroids into his body, has decided that he is smarter than the average American and as such has the right to tell his constituents what they can put into theirs.

The Nanny staters are taking hold and gaining momentum, it has become accepted by Americans that the government knows what is best for us. We willingly fall in line as we are told what we can eat, smoke, and drink. We fall in line as we are told we have to wear seat belts and helmets. The government is gaining more and more control over common sense issues. People like Arnold Schwarzenegger are emboldened to tell us how to live our lives.

What is becoming more and more evident is the fact that Republicans are turning to the left on issues such as this and are now no different than Democrats when it comes to regulating (controlling) personal behaviors. The party as a whole, or mostly whole, is shifting. Arnold is no Republican, neither is John McCain. In an effort to distance themselves from the president, Republicans are aligning themselves with Democrats, that will appeal to the base, huh?

I don’t have a problem with a private business banning smoking or drinking, as a business owner it is well within their rights. I don’t have a problem with a private business doing away with trans fats, what I do have a problem with is the government telling a private business how they should operate.

If I want to participate in an unhealthy behavior like smoking, drinking, or eating greasy foods that is my decision and mine alone. It is not up to the government to regulate these behaviors for the good of the people. I am a big boy, I can take responsibility for my actions. That’s what all these nanny state regulations seem to be about, removing personal responsibility and replacing it with Big Brother type legislation. What are we left with when a person is not held accountable for his actions? What are we left with when the government dictates common sense? We are left with a mindless nation of people, just the kind of people the nanny staters want.

Regretfully, the nanny-staters are winning because people are too lazy to educate themselves. Given how chances of us getting a via third party in this country, little chance of that happening. People are to lazy to educate themselves. Instead they take the easy way out and have the government dictate to them what is best.

Nutrition is especially bad if banning is involved. Remember several years ago, the foods that have trans fats were considered to be healthier alternatives. Wasn’t all cholesterol used to be considered bad as well? Nutrition science (if you can call it that) is in a constant state of flux and what is good one day can be bad the next. Also, many studies that are released are not exactly unbiased.

    To Terrant:
Foods with trans fats were never considered to be healthier alternatives. Wake Up.

As stupid as this move is it’s not going to hurt anybody. Foods with trans fats are mostly junk foods which are not the cheapest foods available in a supermarket. The poor aren’t going to be affected by this decision and if the middle class has to switch from thrice fried pork rinds to “organic pork crisps” I doubt they’ll think twice about it.

Banning trans fats is a lot like banning mercury from being sold as a food. (Mercury actually WAS considered to be healthy at one point but we now know it to be a poison)

So in the end. Who cares?

JC, I think Terrant is right on this issue. Trans fats were presented as an alternative that was supposed to be better for you than cooking with lard and butter if I am not mistaken.

The main problem is the litigators. Stupid people do stupid things and then sue an honest businessman because the stupid people did a stupid thing. Such things as suing a quarry because some dumb kid climbed a six foot fence with “No Trespassing” signs and then drowned in the quarry. Good lawyers will get the stupid kids parents money every time. Just ask John Edwards, that how he made his fortune. The government and the courts don’t require us to have common sense. All part of the Nanny State trying to run every aspect of our lives.

Hey, what if I want to eat foods with trans fats? Isn’t this supposed to be a free country?

    JC,

Margarine, which is known to have trans fats, was considered to be a healthier alternative to butter because of cholesterol. Heck, there is some people who are still trying to make this argument…

Really, until nutritionists stop acting like a bunch of economists, I find it hard to take them seriously.
