Republicans Threaten to Shut Down the Federal Government

August 4, 2008

Republicans are finally starting to stand up for themselves. They have found an  issue in offshore oil drilling that looks like it could be a winner for them and they are taking the offensive. First the Republicans have refused to leave the house and have continued debating offshore drilling although the house is in recess, and now they are threatening to shut down the federal government if offshore drilling is not voted on.

Some Republicans say they are prepared to vote against a resolution to fund the federal government for the 2009 fiscal year unless Democrats agree to lift an offshore drilling moratorium.

Republicans have finally grown a set and are taking a stand on an issue. After the 2006 political castrating of the Republican party the Republicans have been afraid of taking on the Democrats. The “re-branding” of the Republican party was never more evident that the nomination of John McCain as the party’s candidate for president. Now however, Republicans have looked down and realized there still there, so why not use them?

Republicans are starting to stand up for what they believe in, at least on this issue, and it is good to see. I have grown tired of fighting for a party that won’t fight for itself, and now they may be ready to do so.

This issue is a winner for the Republicans as a majority of Americans support an increase in domestic drilling. Democrats are in the back pocket of the environmental groups, which have put us in this situation on the first place, so there is no way that they can win this issue. It is up to Republicans to get this done.

Republicans aren’t afraid of incurring the same type of backlash that they received after shutting down the government in 1995:

with public opinion polls showing that most Americans support increased offshore drilling, Republicans are emboldened to challenge Democrats on the issue, and say that Democrats, not Republicans, would be blamed for the consequences of a government shutdown.

This is becoming a hot button issue, pressure is being applied by the American people to get something done. We saw what we could do when we rose up in protest of the immigration reform bill and we can do it again. We have to do it again, time is running out.

Democrats are on the wrong side of this issue and we must keep the pressure on them to expose them. Republicans need to keep fighting and promoting this issue. There can be no letup.

It’s about time.

Let’s see how McCain fares when the seniors stop getting their SS and Medicaid benefits if they go through with this. This is very risky but knowing how the typical American mindset works and the spineless nature of the congressional democrats, there’s a good chance it will succeed.

But hey, Big Oil is getting their money’s worth this year. Republicans stopped the windfall tax (although I agree that was a bad idea to begin with) for them. The republicans stopped attempts to reform speculation which is where a good chunk of the manipulation is happening. The republicans are going to let pull oil from our land to sell to India and China. To top all off, Big Oil gets to make almost tens of billions in PROFIT on the backs of the little guy who is struggling from paycheck to paycheck just to get to work.

Funny that republicans don’t support releasing oil from the reserve. If an increased supply is the magic bullet to lowering prices, why are they not for it? Oh yeah, Big Oil doesn’t like that idea.

Good. I just hope they stick to their guns on this one. And I thought windfall profits were made from doing nothing. The oil companies are pumping and refining (and whatever else they have to do) the oil. They are doing the work that makes the money. And doesn’t a lot of the profit the oil companies make go to the government in the form of taxes?

The republicans should all be hanged for treason for trying to shut down the United States government. Hang them all on the White House lawn. Traitors.

First of all the Republican’s DId NOT walk off and turn the lights off while the Democrats were conducting business. That was Pelosi Dems need to WATCH and DO THE PEOPLES business NOT the Business of the ENVIROMENTALISTS. YES it is about time the REPUBLICANS GOT TOUGH WIth the DEMOCRATS. Go get some education before slamming anyone without facts. Talk about Traitors I think we have enough Democrats doing that starting with the SPEAKER of the HOUSE….she is the problem for this country. It is about time we started depending on our selves to build up this economy. Opening up off shore drilling will put people back to work and lesson the dependance on foreign oil. If the Dems would quit taxing the companies maybe they wouldn’t leave for foreing countries to pay for cheap labor. Our country is only as strong as the AMERICAN PEOPLE will let it be. FIND A SOLUTION BY SUPPORTING OUR HOME NOT CONDEMING IT> BY condemnation you become part of the problem. Get the lazy and the mindless out of Congress and put in people who CARE about the direction of this Country …. are we going to hand it over to the devil or let it be a FREE DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY> Don’t go for hype

Big Oil Companies profit margin runs around 8.5% which is fairly normal in big business. Disney and Microsoft profit margins runs into 24% or so and nobody seems to care. Seems most democrats never took an economics course.
