Obama Refused to Protect Babies Born Alive During an Attempted Abortion

August 15, 2008

This is a story that I have written about once before an you can read my previous post here. When in the Illinois senate President Obama refused to vote to save the lives of living, breathing babies who survived an attempted abortion. Under the Illinois law these babies were left on the operating table to die while no medical attention was given to them. The babies were then just thrown away like trash. This, simply stated, just isn’t humane. It is barbaric.

 This makes me so angry:

The tiny newborn baby made very little noise as he struggled to breathe. He lacked the strength to cry. He had been born four months premature.

“At that age,” says nurse Jill Stanek, “their lungs haven’t matured.”

Stanek is the nurse who found herself cradling this baby in her hands for all of his 45-minute lifetime. He was close to ten inches long and weighed perhaps half a pound. It’s just a guess — no one had weighed or measured him at birth. No happy family had been there to welcome him into the world. No one was trying to save his life now, putting him into an incubator, giving him oxygen or nourishment. He had just been left to die.

If do not see anything wrong with the policy of letting a BORN baby die without administering any medical assistance to try to save it’s life than I just don’t know what has happened to society and the respect for a human life.

There was only one senator that stood up and spoke in opposition of saving these babies lives and guess who it was. President Obama, that’s who.

On March 30, 2001, Obama was the only senator to speak in opposition to a bill that would have banned the practice of leaving premature abortion survivors to die. The bill, SB 1095, was carefully limited, its language unambiguous. It applied only to premature babies, already born alive. It stated simply that under Illinois law, “the words ‘person,’ ‘human being,’ ‘child,’ and ‘individual’ include every infant member of the species homo sapiens who is born alive at any stage of development.”

Let me get this straight, the senate tried to define a person as any homo sapien who was born alive and President Obama not only opposed this legislation but spoke against it? First of all I don’t understand how America got to the point in society when you actually have to put into law that any living baby born into the world is a human being, but that is how far we have sunk in this country.

And secondly the fact that someone could actually stand up and oppose defining a living, breathing baby as a human is not only disgusting, it is reprehensible and indefensible. But defend his position he did:

it would essentially bar abortions, because the equal protection clause does not allow somebody to kill a child, and if this is a child, then this would be an antiabortion statute.

What the fuck? He is opposed to saving a living baby that survived abortion because murder is illegal? The equal protection clause does not allow us to kill a child so we can’t call this dying baby a child? He is so afraid of any restrictions on abortion and the possibility that this bill could lead to tighter regulations on abortion that he finds it more palatable to let babies die on the operating table.

President Obama continues to defend this reprehensible mindset by claiming that is was all part of a conspiracy by Republicans to ban all abortions. That is no excuse, I can’t state firmly enough that these were babies who were born alive and left to die. How can anyone ever think that this is okay? How could anyone ever vote for a man that is this extreme?

How can someone look at a tiny baby, with heart beating, breathing and crying, and refuse to acknowledge that this person is alive? How could someone watch this baby die and wash his hands of it? How did the pro abortion crowd become so powerful that a life is lost just to keep the movement in tact? What kind of a man is President Obama?

If America can put a man like this in officethan I don’t know what kind of country we have become.

This is so saddening and disheartening to me. I didn’t care too much about the issue until I had my daughter but now the thought of her not being here bc of poor choices on someone ELSE’s part is just unfathomable. Thanks for blogging about this, it needs to be talked about.
By the way, McCain is PRO LIFE, hello, check out his website under “issues”- http://www.johnmccain.com/Informing/Issues/95b18512-d5b6-456e-90a2-12028d71df58.htm

Okay, well one of them is going to be President so why don’t we pick the one who will do the least damage, aka NOT MURDERING BABIES?!

materetuxor, my second comment was directed at Ben, I hadn’t seen your comment when I wrote my replies.
You said in your first comment that you didn’t care much about this issue at one time but now you do. To be honest I don’t consider this issue very high on the list of issues that I look at when picking a presidential candidate, but when I read something like this it is so appauling to me that anyone could take Obama’s position that I lose my mind. I am rambling here because this story is so reprehensible to me that I can’t even put it into words.

    Abortion – murder if successful.
IF not successful – attempted murder.
HOW could anyone be against letting a child that survived such a horrible thing…NOT LIVE?

Let me preface my statement first by saying I personally have problems with abortion and don’t think I could ever have one. I’m happy I’ve never made a bad decision that put me in a situation I did not want to be in.

That said, I think we have gotten to a place where the word “baby” triggers strong knee-jerk reactions in people. We have all been trained to coo and have strong feelings to protect children. Of course we have also evolved this way, too…some of this is innate or “God-given”.

Infanticide has been a practice since the beginning of time, as have abortions. And they were done by rational people. In other cultures, such as my parents’ it was practiced even in the last century for various reasons. People who do this do not necessarily lack any sense of attachment to their children. They do it for what they feel are rational reasons.

Let us not pretend that we have a problem killing “innocents” – in this case – babies – because frankly, historically the killing of innocents is the reason why those of us alive are here. Our ancestors were violent and killed innocents; one could argue we are the descendants of violent people.

What I’m trying to say is that it is possible to look at a baby and take its life. In addition to my parents’ culture, there are accounts of this being done in various parts of Asia and even by slaves in the US when slavery was practiced.

Yes, I find it disgusting and unsavory that a child was allowed to die after an attempted abortion. That is my personal reaction but seriously, I think people should calm down.

I’d like to see this same reaction to ANY “innocent” killed unjustly. That includes civilians in occupations, wars, etc. Most of the time, those innocents are helpless, just like babies, to prevent their deaths. Let’s not get apoplectic simply because the word “baby” is used instead of “adult”.

I’d admire the pro-life movement more if they were not selectively pro-life. And to loosely quote my pro-life mother: “Why don’t people who are pro-life adopt children more and why do they also seem to be against helping out poor women?”

I’d like to see posts like this followed by constructive plans to combat abortion – like helping women financially who choose to have their babies. Or adopting children who are given up or abandoned. I imagine some women who have abortions think its better than the child being in the foster system.

How much do you really value the life of a baby?

femmeautonome (is that so?) ~ You really need to focus on the issue stated here. You go on rambling about “pro life” people and about war and “innocents”. You’ve obviously strayed from the topic. No one should base their thoughts about murdering babies on what the pro life movement is doing. Or how rational their thought process is, or whether or not they support poor women. This isn’t about any of them, but about all of those individual babies left to die (babies don’t know about pro life and pro choice, they’re just trying not to die and failing because no one is helping them. So horrible!!!

“it would essentially bar abortions, because the equal protection clause does not allow somebody to kill a child, and if this is a child, then this would be an antiabortion statute.”

This man is unbelievable! This statute does NOT bar abortions. It never did. He is lying and he knows it! The part that really bothers me is that he professes to be a Christian and yet for him it is okay to call a viable child not human so it is okay to kill it and his conscience will be free of any guilt.

I am relaunching my blog this week with its new look and I will be dealing with this specific subject.

    Great work!

I know im about a month too late and peoples minds are made up, but did anyone actually read the transcripts from the vote? I mean the actual words he used at the actual event? Apparently not, cause he didnt vote for or against, he voted “present” which means to abstain.

Do some research before believing an obvious McCain supporter. I did.

A present vote is the same as a no vote. I didn’t say he voted against the bill, I said he refused to vote in favor of it. And he was the only person to speak against it.
You did not look around my blog at all did you? If you did you would have seen that I am not a McCain supporter.

I read the actual argument by Obama. He spoke against the bill because he believed it was unconstitutional as written. He said it would most likely be declared unconstitutional by the Seventh Court of Appeals. And he cited another anti-abortion bill that he also had spoke out against that actually was declared unconstitutional. There exists a law already on the books in Illinois (Illinois Abortion Law of 1975 – look it up) that covers born-alive infants. The “vile” case in question was being performed illegally in the first place, so the point about this law allowing it to happen is a false statement.

I reckon Americans should be made to live on massive boats, and their country can become a wildlife reserve. At least then america would see a rise in table manners.
