Former DNC Chairman: “Gustav Proof God is on our Side”

September 1, 2008

First we had Michael Moore claim that Hurricane Gustav was “proof there is a God in heaven“, and now former DNC Chairman Don Fowler had this to say about the impending natural disaster:

His thoughts on the people who might be affected by the hurricane? None. The hurricane is proof that “God is on our side,” is what he said. (Our side being the Democrats of course) Thinking politically before all else. The thoughtless and cold-hearted way that he was able to put politics first is chilling.

He later apologized for the remarks:

“If this offended anybody, I personally apologize,” Fowler told ABC News. “It was a mistake, and it was a satirical statement made in jest. And one that I clearly don’t believe.”

Of course he then followed up his apology by blaming a right wing nutcase for taping him in the first place.

“One doesn’t anticipate that one’s private conversation will be surreptitiously taped by some right-wing nutcase,” said Fowler. “But that’s the nature of what we’re dealing with.”

Ah, the good ole right wing conspiracy is back. But he doesn’t even stop there, he then decides that he was just making satirical humor aimed at Jerry Falwell, who like the Reverend Wright blamed Americans for 9/11 although for different reasons. After watching the video it is quite obvious that he found it humorous that the hurricane was timed to hit land on the day the GOP convention started. There was no satirical humor, he was giddy about it.

These are some of the people who attacked President Bush for not caring about the poor people of New Orleans. These are the same people that used Katrina to say Bush is out of touch. Remember Kanye West’s George Bush doesn’t like black people comment? But when a natural disaster may be headed their way again what is the first thing that comes to their minds? Is the the people who will be affected? NO! The first thing that they think of is, “how will the election be affected?”

The DNC has has said that they need to make an effort to reach out to evangelical voters. Is this what they meant?

Secretly recorded by the guy sitting behind him on an airplane?

You people are creeps. At least he didn’t pray for rain and not rain of Biblical proportions. That was your conservative evangelicals and it looks like the Gulf Coast is going to get it. Time to pray for forgiveness.

As Obama said on Thursday: “If this is to be an ownership society, it is time for the GOP to start owning its failures.”

Katrina would be a good place to start.

The creeps are the ones who find humor in a disaster. Let’s look the failings of government during and before Katrina hit. Ray Nagin left the buses that could have been used for evacuation in a parking lot to be flooded because they weren’t comfortable enough. And when Kathleen Blanco was awakened from a sleep shortly before the hurricane by a phone call from the president she told him everything was fine. She refused his request to declare a national emergency so that federal aide and the military could be sent in to help. That is why the feds were slow to arrive, let’s not foget that the feds couldn’t come in until they were asked.

Politicians need to watch what they say especially in areas where there is no expectation of privacy because of all of the cameras that people are packing these days. People on both sides of the aisle make these sort of off-color jokes so making it a partisan issue is disingenuous. Today, it’s a democrat. Tomorrow, it will be a republican.

I find it interesting that republicans find it acceptable to use the 9/11 disaster as political currency but the criticism of Bush’s response to Katrina seems to be verboten.

WHY is it the Presidents fault that the levees broke? Below sea level… hmm… Maybe something bad could happen. If people honestly expect the government to bail them out of everything, including a natural disaster, then you will be disappointed. As far as the RNC is concerned, big deal. You really think that the “bump” Obama got will last, and McCain won’t get one? it really does not matter.

I am not one of those people who feel that the government should leave people to the wolves when it comes to disasters. My expectations would have been for the government to (1) reestablish order and (2) get aid to those who got stranded or evacuate them. That’s all. FEMA fell short on both of those expectations and hence it is a reflection of Bush’s administration. Now, the entitlement democrats that are still whining, that’s another topic.

I also find it interesting that Bush gets defended when not bailing people out but turn a blind eye when businesses get bailed out (the airlines after 9/11, Bear Stearns, and now mortgage companies).

Terrant, I am against all business bailouts also. I wasn’t blogging during the airline bailout after 9/11 but I did have a critical view of the mortgage bailout earlier this year.
