Palin vs Obama on Abortion

September 2, 2008

This whole “controversy” over Sarah Palin’s pregnant teenage daughter gives us an opening to take a look at the difference of opinion between her and Barack Obama on the issue of abortion. It comes as no surprise that these two people differ on this issue but this an an opportunity to take a closer look at it.

This is what Sarah Palin had to say about her daughter’s pregnancy:

Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents,”

Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family.”

I am sure that Sarah Palin was disappointed at her daughter’s carelessness and bad decision. But being the supportive and caring mother that she is, she vowed to give her the love and support that any true family would. She is proud of her daughter and even though she probably felt some amount of failure for not being able stop this from happening she is being supportive of her daughter. She may have failed to convince her daughter about unprotected sex but where she didn’t fail was in her effort to teach her daughter about the sanctity of life, even unborn life. And for that she deserves credit.

This is what family is to me. Sure, family members might not always agree. But to me family should always be there to support you through the bad times as well as the good. Sometimes you may let your family down, but when all is said and done the family will never let you down. They may be mad at you for a while, but blood is thicker than water, as they say, and a family’s love will always trump the disappointment you may have incurred from them.

Let’s contrast Sarah Palin’s love and support for her daughter with the hypothetical of the pregnancy of one of Barack Obama’s daughters. When talking about sex education and contraception, this is what Barack Obama had to say about the possibility of one of his daughters making a mistake and getting pregnant, “But if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby.”

Punished with a baby? Instead of promising to love the baby that would be his grandchild he considers the grandchild a punishment. There is no thought about this child being life, just an inconvenience that can be easily done away with. The fact that this man sees a baby as punishment for a bad decision reveals quite a bit about this man. To me it is chilling that a man couldn’t look past his initial disappointment in his daughter’s decision, and love his grandchild, but would rather see his future grandchild as nothing more than a punishment.

That is a fundamental difference between Sarah Palin and Barack Obama. I know that I am comparing the Republican VP candidate to the Democrat presidential candidate, but I think I made my point. While one person declares that she will help her daughter and love her baby, the other candidate considers the potential baby a punishment. This is just a fundamental difference in the thinking between the two parties. And I think the difference is striking.

She’s even anti-abortion in the case of rape. There is zero medical proof of life at conception. That said, it probably shouldn’t even be a federal issue and far from a single issue to base a presidency around. You’re ok with torture and the death penalty (with known innocent adults being killed) but anti-abortion? Another corporate christian. Jesus forgives your hypocrisy.

there is proof that life begins at conception. All the DNA of a human being is present.

Abortion is killing the innocent, torture and death penalty is killing the guilty.

There is no hypocrisy around, but only to democrats.

    JustaplainChristian,
To options, without conception there would be no life. Life begins at conception! The choices that adults make have consequences. God is in control make no mistake about it. God is full of Grace, An adult even up to the time of execution has the “Freedom to choose ”
accepting Jesus Christ , and believing that He did die for their sins willingly because He loves us. So accepting Jesus Christ means eternal life, not death.

I love what Palin said about it. “Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family.”

You have hit the nail on the head with this post, my friend.

One more thing, WHEN LIFE BEGINS IS NOT EVEN AN ISSUE. Whether it begins at conception or sometime later, the difference between Palin’s maturity and Obama’s treatment of a potential baby as nothing more than a punishment is enough to notice the fundamental differences in character.

Your other commenters need not argue about the legaility of abortion. This is about love.

Sarah Palin is twice the man Obama is. From what I’ve seen, she can handle pretty much anything. Although in the man dept., Michelle Obama may give her a run for her money……

So a collection of living cells is life, eh? I hope you’re protecting those plants and rabbits. A DNA sequence does not equal life. If it was obvious, over half the country wouldn’t disagree with you.

Palin is the saviour now huh? Maybe you should read this from somone who knows her:

A letter from someone who has known Sarah Palin since 1992

    Or this from CONSERVATIVE COMMENTATORS:

    http://politicalirony.com/2008/09/02/palins-lawyer-uses-a-very-bad-example/

Deb, president of the Harvard Law Review and a U. Chicago Lecturer are quite a bit more challenging than mayor of Wassila. If the parties were reversed you wouldn’t stop laughing. Stop being a partisan and open your eyes.

Also, the death penalty has NOT always killed the guilty and I find it amazing that you can reconcile man’s ability to determine guilt and death but you can’t rely on man’s ability to determine life.

Maybe it’s due to the fact that I have different life experiences but my take on the punishment remark was more of a jab at the religious right that refuses to allow children to be given sex education. Before continuing, I would like to go off on a tangent.

Earlier this year, there was a bill brought up in the Indiana senate that would have mandated every girl entering grade 6 to receive the Gardasil vaccine. The ensuing debate did not revolve around the vaccine’s effectiveness, how much it cost, or even the fact that Merck was clearly trying to maximize its profits. No, the debate centered around morality and how it would send a mixed signal.

Judging from some of the messages that I seen in local message boards and the letters to the editor, some of the members of the religious community were also viewing it as the removal of a deterrent and punishment to having sex before marriage.

When I was in high school, my high school had the highest pregnancy rate in the area. What was the solution that the board chose? To have someone come every couple months to preach (let’s just say separation of church and state is a foreign concept where I grew up) abstinence and to scare us into not even looking at a member of the opposite sex. Guess what? Nothing changed as of the last I checked. However, I do recall at least one of these speakers actually using the word punishment in the context of what it would do your life.

Now as to whether or not my take on what Obama meant with that phrase, I don’t know. I am a person who tends to give people more of a benefit of the doubt more than what they deserve at times. If my view is correct, he certainly didn’t think it through enough.

“So a collection of living cells is life, eh?”

Yes it is. Why do you feel the need to sugarcoat the reality that abortion is the act of killing a human albeit in a very early stage of development?

because humanity = thought for me. Notice how you don’t protect all living creatures and the sanctity of their lives. Clearly there’s something about a human that elevates their status, no? That something is consciousness, At 7 weeks there are not neural pathways to transmit pain or other senses. Do I think abortions are great, no? Would I want to give my sister the chocie if she was raped and could terminate at an early point. Yes. You want to deny that right to a woman. I guess I value a human’s rights over that of a 1/2 inch long embryo.

I am not begrudging Michelle Obama her accomplishments, they are admirable. But having been a mayor of a small town lead directly to governor of the state is also quite an accomplishment. Democrats are just as, if not more partisan than republicans. And comparing humans to flies? Now we should feel guilty about being at the top of the food chain? And I don’t like having to use a cliche here, but there is no such thing as a little bit pregnant.

Terrant, I am hot against sex education, but when someone says that they would like to teach it to kindergarteners I have a problem. That is something Obama said he was for.
Interesting point on the “punishment” andle, I went to Catholic school through the eighth grade and the word “punish” was used quite a bit. Perhaps that is where Obama got that notion.

Options, when does actual thought begin in a child’s life? If humanity =thought then when do you consider a child as a thinking individual? I hope you were using that equasion as a means to define the difference between a human “collection of cells” and plant life and not as a determining factor on how late a woman can have an abortion.

Holy crap Deb, please tell me you are being facetious. I’ve sought to weaken an argument by showing a fallacy in logic. Who the hell would compare a human to a fly. That was the point, a collection of cells = flies human. I can’t believe we might have a McCain presidency elected by complete idiots. The North really should secede so you can have your theocracy and the rest of the nation can become Alabama and leave us the hell alone.

Theocracy? Since when did so many in this country completely abandon what the country was built upon? That collection of cells, when it is in a womans uterus is a human life, not to be compared with any other living thing. I apologize if I was not clear. But I still am wondering why so many americans have abandoned the religion they grew up with. God is a given.
