Barack Obama Admits the Surge has Worked on the No Spin Zone
Barack Obama finally appeared on Fox News on the No Spin Zone. He finally showed just a little bit of courage and allowed himself to be interviewed by Bill O’Reilly. Of course this was an attempt by him to steal a little of John McCain’s spotlight at the RNC on the night John McCain was to give his speech. This coming after his campaign “urged” John McCain to not steal Barack Obama’s night by announcing his running mate during Barack Obama’s speech. So much for “what’s good for the goose is good for the gander” huh?
During this interview Barack Obama finally admitted that the surge was a success even though he refused to admit that he was wrong about the surge. He went so far as to say that the surge “worked beyond our wildest dreams”. Still he claims he was right to oppose it based on what he says is the lack of Iraqis to stand up for themselves. He must not be watching all of the news coming out about Iraq the last few days. He must have missed the report that said that 15 out of 18 benchmarks were reached. He must have missed the reports that the United States and Iraq have reached a “time horizon” for troop withdrawal by 2011, he must have missed General Petraeus’ report may include a reduction of troops, and he must have also missed the fact that the United States has turned Anbar Province over to the Iraqi’s. All of these recent developments were achieved because the Iraqi people are beginning to stand up. Barack Obama missed all of these events, he must have had something else on his plate that is taking up all his time.
But I want to address his assumption that the surge has worked beyond our wildest dreams.
Newsflash to Barack Obama: not everybody holds your contempt and distrust of the United States military. Some of us have faith in our troops. Some of us believe in our troops. Some of us knew that if the full force of the United States military were allowed to fight that there is no army that can defeat it. Some of us love the troops and the freedom that they provide and protect. Some of us knew that the troops would succeed if given the chance. Some of us only wish that the Iraq war was fought to win from the beginning instead of trying to fight a politically correct war.
So while you may have been surprised, maybe even disappointed, that the surge succeeded, most of us knew that it would succeed. It is not beyond our wildest dreams that the military would accomplish it’s goals, but it may have been above yours. Be a man, step up and admit you were wrong. And while you are at it, you owe the troops that you have shit on an apology.

Looks like he finally did what he should have done months ago. However, I think that if he had, his nomination would have been jeopardized (especially considering what they did to Lieberman).

True, he had to hold firm to his opposition and he has, in order to be elected.

LOL! We think alike! I wrote on this very subject today except I came at it from a little different perspective!

It must be the New Hampshire air!
I lost all (if there actually was any) respect for Obama in that interview. He was pitiful!

The surge worked — depending of course on how you define the “surge” — for three main reasons. First, beginning in 2006, and continuing under Gen. Petraeus, the US military began arming and funding Sunni militias in western Iraq who made up the bulk of the insurgency and had formerly been allied with Al Qaeda. With US bribe money in hand, these militias are now either fighting Al Qaeda side by side with US forces, or at the least they’re no longer shooting at us. Deprived of insurgency support, Al Qaeda has been marginalized and driven into the far corners of Iraq.
Second, the ethnic cleansing of Sunnis by Shiite militias in Baghdad was nearly complete by late 2007. (Most Sunnis who were not killed had fled the country; there are now some 1.5 million Iraqi Sunni refugees in Syria, three quarters of a million more in Jordan.) With few Sunnis left for the Shiites to shoot at, American casualties have also declined.
Finally, the cease-fire called by Moktada Al-Sadr. With his military objectives — the aforementioned ethnic cleansing — all but complete, Al-Sadr had little to lose militarily, and a lot to gain politically, from a cease-fire.
Note that the main reasons for the reduction of American casualties and the stabilization of Iraq have little to do with troop escalation. They came about because the Bush administration quietly changed course and began striking deals with a Sunni insurgency it formerly insisted simply on shooting at in central and western Iraq, and because the Shiite militias in Baghdad have achieved their major military goal.
I’m ecstatic that, after five years of disastrous policies conducting a tragic war that we should never have started, the Bush administration is finally getting something right. I’m elated it’s beginning to look like we might coming to the end of this sorry chapter of American history.
I’m appalled at the extent of the silent tragedy of the Iraq war that goes unmentioned by either candidate — but especially by McCain who still champions an open-ended conflict: millions of Iraqi refugees who may never be able to return to their country; hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead as a result of the US invasion; and tens of thousands of Americans permanently maimed in the service of a war that never should have been. Support our troops? Absolutely. Let’s support them by getting them out of harm’s way as soon as possible, and by not being so gung-ho next time to put them there in the first place.
Obama isn’t right about everything. But he was right to oppose the war, and he was right to oppose the escalation.

Gung-ho? Americans are NEVER ( and I don’t use the word lightly) “gung-ho” to start a war or anything that may risk the lives of it’s citizens. Brave men & women VOLUNTEER for the service because they want to defend the country that is the leader of the free world. I am sick to death of the libs “anyone but us” attitude. When other countries cannot take care of themselves, we have no choice but to step in, unfortunately.

Perhaps you missed 2003. Bush and the neo-cons were so desperate to get into Iraq they couldn’t even give UN inspectors six weeks to wrap up their work.
The Bush administration *wanted* this war. It was clear in 2003, and it has been corroborated by a number of ex-administration officials since then.

Men and women volunteer for military service for many reasons: sometimes to get out of bleak economic situations, sometimes for the benefits military recruiters offer, sometimes out of patriotism. Both my father and one brother served in the military, and, while they are both patriotic, neither enlisted out of idealist patriotism. Nonetheless, neither they, nor anyone I’m personally acquainted with *wants* to go to war (unless by “defend our country” you mean something else than taking military action).
Hey, I’m all for defending the US. Convince me that invading Iraq has anything to do with that. Iraq had no connections with the terrorists who instigation 911 (unless you count letters forged by the Bush administration), nor did Hussein present any credible threat to America in any way. What, precisely, are we defending ourselves against?

Obama has never “shit” on the troops. He is about making better decisions when sending them in harms way. If you truly “supported our troops” you wouldn’t want them dying for no reason. This war is a travesty and every one of the 4000 Americans who died have done so for no reason.
They fought honorably, but their leadership failed them. Bush should be tried for murder against Americans. He used them as a tool to get Saddam Hussein who he personally hated. Bush is the real person who “shit” on the troops.

Let’s not forget that the commander of the US military clearly lied to the American people to gain support for his invasion of a country that had no WMDs and no ties to Al Qaeda.
In other words, one reason that lots of Americans distrust the military is because we can all see who is calling the shots. I have no contempt for the grunts, but their senior leadership is completely dishonorable.
I am voting for Obama in November.
Have a nice day.

Bush committed treason plain and simple. In lying to get us to go to war he put his own interests ahead of what was right for the country.
He should be tried and found guilty for treason and murder. Murder of the American soldiers who died for a lie.
I have just heard of a Representative in Vermount who is promising to try Bush for his crimes. I wish more poeple would be outraged that a President lied to us and caused the deaths of our soldiers. All these people who say they support the troops should be up in arms crying out for justice for their dead.
Bush is a traitor.
