Barack Obama Says he Might Delay Rescinding Bush Tax Cuts

September 8, 2008

One of the biggest issues that Barack Obama has campaigned on is rescinding the Bush tax cuts. Now however he seems to be wavering on this promise. He now claims that he might have to delay his promise based on the economy.

“I think we’ve got to take a look and see where the economy is. I mean, the economy is weak right now,” Obama said on “This Week” on ABC. “The news with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, I think, along with the unemployment numbers, indicates that we’re fragile.”

This is a stunning confession to me and I don’t mean the fact that Barack Obama is already talking about breaking a campaign promise. What I am referring to is the fact that this is an admission that raising taxes hurts the economy. That is something that Democrats ignore publicly while trying to insight class warfare and jealousy. It begs me to ask the question, if raising taxes is bad for the economy than how can it ever be a good idea to raise taxes, even in a good economy? Won’t raising taxes in a good economy begin to slow the economy? The answer is yes.

Obama went on to say he will still cut taxes on the middle class:

“Even if we’re still in a recession, I’m going to go through with my tax cuts,” Obama said. “That’s my priority.”

Okay, let’s pretend for a minute that Barack Obama really did plan to cut taxes on the middle class. How can he be taken at his word after he has just come out and admitted that he may have to delay rescinding the Bush tax cuts that he claims were only for the wealthy? But that isn’t what I wanted to focus on in that sentence. I wanted to focus on the blatant distortion of the economy in his statement. He claims if the economy is “still in a recession” he will still go ahead with middle class tax cuts. But the problem is that while the economy is slowing down we are not in a recession. There is a definition of recession and it is as follows; an extended decline in general business activity, typically two consecutive quarters of falling real gross national product. That has not happened.

Barack Obama is using that word purposely to mislead the American people about the economy. As I said before the economy has slowed but that doesn’t have the impact with the voters as the word recession does. So Barack Obama is out there throwing this word around to spread fear in the minds of the voters in order to gain votes.

If memory serves me correctly, Obama stated that he was going to rescind the tax cuts for those who make over $250K. Basically, tax the rich. I think the admission is that the economy is so bad that the wealthiest, who are generally regarded by liberals as an endless piggy bank, can’t take on the additional burden.

There are many definitions on what is a recession. Some economists have stated that we are in one (conversely, there are some that say we aren’t). The NBER’s definition (http://www.nber.org/cycles.html) is “a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales.” NBER is the agency that makes the official declaration of a recession in the United States. The NBER usually does not declare a recession until months after it has started and in some cases after it ended.

There’s this saying about ducks. Whether or not we are in one, there is a lot of quacking.

Yeah, “read my lips’. (Sorry, 41) Raising taxes makes Obama an unpopular candidate. He’s already scared out of his wits. Hey, wouldn’t it be funny if the Clinton machine could be linked in any way to a potential McCain-Palin win?
