Where do we go now but Nowhere? (The Future of the Republican Party)

November 5, 2008

Where do we go now, but nowhere? That is the title of a Nick Cave song. Probably one of his most depressing songs, and that is saying something. If you have ever listened to Nick Cave you know what I mean.

But that is also the question that I began to ask myself today. Where does the Republican party go from here? I just don’t have an answer. I know where they should go, back to their small government ways. But can they or will they?

We just watched a pivotal presidential race and a socialist got elected. We have reached a point in American culture where 52% of America believe it is the job of the United States government to take money from those of us who work and give it to those of us who don’t. We have reached a point where it is accepted behavior for the government to socialize the mortgage industry, the economy, and the banking system. President-elect Obama will continue forth with this precedent that was set in motion by George W Bush. airlines and auto manufacturers will be the next industries to be centralized. But Americans appear to be okay with this. How can Republicans turn this around now that more Americans believe in larger government with more government handouts?

Republicans managed to hold off total disaster by limiting Democrat gains in the senate, they now have two options. The first option is to stop Obama from implementing his far left agenda through the filibuster. How will this play to the American people who bought into the change mantra? President-elect Obama will be able to portray the Republicans as being obstructionists, as more of the same. We have seen how well this war cry worked during the election. If Republicans try this tactic it may lead to even larger Democrat majorities during the next election.

The second option is to work with the Democrats to pass Obama’s agenda, and that will be counter to the base’s agenda. This would have obvious negative effects with the base, where would they go, but nowhere. The base would be forced to vote for the Republicans or stay home.

John McCain made his name by using scenario number two and opposing a Republican president whenever he could, we have seen how well that worked out for Republicans. So now Republicans are licking their wounds and trying to regroup. Republicans must come up with a new strategy, a new message.

While Republicans regroup, the far left agenda will progress to a point where it may be irreversible. It will take years for the Republicans to make back the losses that they have received in the last two years alone. While the Republicans are spinning their wheels the Democrats will make extraordinary gains. What can we do?

Where do we go, but nowhere?

There are a number of things that I can say what the republicans need to do to rebuild some of which will not be too popular with the hard core conservatives. However, I think that the republicans need to move more towards the center (the same could be said of the democrats) as I think that the nation is mostly moderate and maybe with conservative leaning.
