President Obama and the Politics of Fear

January 27, 2009

How many times have we heard the term “the politics of fear” in the past? The answer is innumerable times. Whenever President Bush, John McCain, or any other Republican for that matter, mentioned terrorism, or September 11th they were accused of engaging in the politics of fear. They were accused of fear-mongering for talking about a very real issue that Americans need to hear about.

Since President Obama took the oath of office, and actually even before, he has been warning Americans of the need to pass his stimulus bill right away. He has let Republicans know that American can’t afford a delay in the passage of this bill.

President Obama is using the “politics of fear” to scare the American people into pressuring their senators and representatives into supporting his stimulus bill. He is also using the “politics of fear” to try to intimidate Republican lawmakers into supporting his bill.

Every day he goes on television and radio claiming that we can’t delay passing his bill. He claims that every day the economy gets worse and worse and that only his bill can save the day. This is fear-mongering. The same type of fear-mongering that the left accused Bush of using, this is just fear-mongering on a different issue.

The economy goes through ups and downs, it always has and always will. There have been worse economic times and there have been better economic times. But President Obama is using the politics of fear to claim that this time only government spending and increasing the size of government will save the economy. This is a lie. The economy will eventually approve without his bill.

President Obama is using the “politics of fear” not because he is proposing an economic stimulus package that will right the economy, President Obama is using the “politics of fear” to push a radical far left agenda in the guise of an economic stimulus package.

President Obama is trying to scare the American people into supporting his stimulus package before they realize that it is really nothing more than a giant welfare check underwritten by the American taxpayer.

President Obama is nothing but an economic fear-monger.

I recall that during the election John McCain thought the economic slump was so serious he wanted to stop the presidential campaign in order to deal with it. Every economist I’ve heard from, both liberal and conservative, have stated there are serious economic problems that need to be addressed. Barack Obama and his entire economic team believe the economic situation is serious, and they’ve made a pretty good case for the bill they’re seeking to push.

With all due respect, I think this is slightly different in character then the way that George Bush and his administration talked about terrorism to the public. The administration cultivated a “with us or against us mentality” that sought to portray anyone who opposed the admininstration as not only un-American, but as actively working against the security of the United States.

Those are just my thoughts, and if you don’t agree with me, well, you’re helping the terrorists who want to destroy this country and kill soccer moms with dirty bombs.

Just kidding about that last part.

I was critical of McCain for his lame attempt at political gain for flying back to Washington to save the day and the country from economic collapse. The fact that John McCain was campaigning on the issue of cutting wasteful spending and then flew back to Washington to endorse the pork ladened bailout bill is what cost him the election. He backed what was a very unpopular bill and he paid for it.

Oh unholy crap! Just how hypocritical can these Obamatards be!?!? And then they have the audacity to defend hypocrisy with further hypocrisy!
Every time I look around, I encounter the “With us or against us” attitude from the left. And any criticism of the Great Obama is vilified as un-American. Not to mention that the comparison, though maybe beyond the grasp of the simple minded, of terrorism related politics of fear to this current only Obama’s great plan can save the economy politics of fear is spot on. Well except for the fact that Terrorism actually is a threat that must be dealt with by aggressive counter terrorism whereas the current economic crisis is not really all that bad, when looked at in a historical context, and does not require aggressive intervention. Not only is Obama’s intervention not necessary, the current “Intervention” plan will actually damage the economy and only serve to further the socialist agenda and shovel more pork to the favorites. This is NOT an economic stimulus plan, it is crooked politics as usual. I can’t believe the audacity of it! It is barely even disguised.
I am just sick that there are enough simple minded sheep in this country to have been bamboozled into electing this crook. And yes, I believe that McCain and the GOP are largely responsible for this disaster. If the GOP had presented a proper and true conservative Republican, then we would probably have won. Thanks John. I respect and honor your previous service to this country but you have completely lost my respect as politician.
Oh yea, and Obama has already started implementing his agenda to completely undermine the security of our nation and ensure the deaths of many soccer moms at the hands of terrorists using dirty bombs, among many other attacks.

    Patriot,

I thought I’d give your post a response just to give you my perspective on some of the points you made.

As to the lack of criticism of Barack Obama, I’m a little puzzled that you’re not seeing any. At his first press conference, several journalists attacked the new administration for a couple of its appointments–essentially calling them hypocritical–and also went after the administration for not being open enough to the press. There has been no mention that the press has been unfaithful to the United States.

Well-known conservative commentators like William Kristol, David Brooks, and Charles Krauthammer have been suspicious of Obama’s economic ideas, and Barack Obama responded by inviting them to dinner and explaining time and time again that his administration will be actively seeking the opinions of the opposition.

Liberals such as Helen Thomas and the website Daily Kos have criticized the president for his views on Israel and the wars in Pakistan and Afghanistan, but again there haven’t been attacks against them by the administration or any serious commentator.

I know that some talk show hosts are actively calling for the failure of the Obama administration, which Obama has not denounced directly, but has informed Republican colleagues that they shouldn’t be taking marching orders from talk radio. No one who’s not a complete whackjob lefty with no credibility has called for the suspension of any radio hosts.

As to the Obama administration weakening America’s security, there are a couple things I’d like to mention. First of all, Obama was ridiculed during his campaign for taking a hard line on Pakistan, and the second day he was in office he allowed an air strike to be launched against suspected extremists in Northern Pakistan. Everything he’s done has indicated that he takes terrorism seriously and has no inclination to allow it to flourish. He even went on Al-Arabiya television and called the terrorists’ ideology “bankrupt” and one that leads to nothing but “death and destruction. He also said in no uncertain terms that “we will hunt them down.”

I bet you’re a little suspicious of Barack Obama’s orders to close Gitmo. A lot of people are; half of the American people are unsure of the idea, and the press has been asking the administration what the heck they intend to do with the prisoners, to which they haven’t received a satisfactory answer,

What I understand Obama to be doing is that he’s trying to take away recruitment tools from the bloodthirsty terrorists so that they have a more difficult time finding new foot soldiers. There are very faithful Americans who believe that extremists can be defeated by killing them with weapons and taking away their propaganda ideas. Obama believes this as well; he’s said as much.

As for the bailout, well, Obama is simply expanding the ideas that were started by George Bush. His new Treasury Secretary Geithner has restricted companies’ ability to lobby for the bailout money, and where this money goes will have to be monitored carefully by everyone, and it’s times like these that I’m so happy we have a robust opposition. We’re going to really have to keep an eye on how this money is spent.

I’m sorry this is so long, but your post really got me thinking. I joke with my friends that I “drank the Kool-Aid” when it comes to Obama. However, when I voted for Bush in 2000 I was excited for him as well and defended him against a lot of initial criticism.

Best and thank you for your service,

    Obamatard

“President Obama is using the “politics of fear” to scare the American people into pressuring their senators and representatives into supporting his stimulus bill.”

    Exactly right.

Obama is running scared and it shows. During the campaign he had nothing but a sycophantic fan base and adoring media. Now he’s got opposition, and he’s confused. “how can anyone oppose me?” he thinks.

Further, he’s never run anything, nor been in any legislative body long enough to know how real politics works. His talk about a “new politics of hope” sounded good but was not based in reality.

There’s a big difference between using the fact that terrorists unleashed unprecedented attacks on civilians in our own country as a basis to hit them back, and scaring people with impending economic doom, as both Bush and now Obama have done.

Obama’s using the exact same tactics as the Bush bailout, which actually had some merit for reasons that can be lengthy. Namely that the bailout does not require govt expense for lenders that sign up and renegotiate loans, and successfully collect.

This stimulus pork package of Obama’s is pure govt spending and expansion, and that’s all it is. The only people helped are some of the jobless people that will now be paid salary by the US taxpayer.

The unemployed are in single digits, taxpayers are still over 50%, for now anyway… we’re soon to become a minority that can never defeat a tax hike again.
