Justice Department to Big Companies: Big Brother is Watching
The administration issued a warning today to firms that improperly dominate markets. Big Brother is watching you and if your company makes more money that the government believes that you should you will be investigated by the justice department.
This president has shown us a fondness for getting overly involved in the private sector and he used the bailout bill to justify it at first. But now the justice department has fired a shot over the bow at companies whose only crime is being successful. If the justice department deems that your company dominates the market that you are involved in they are going to come after you.
A little spreading the wealth around I would say. We all saw this coming from the anti-capitalist in the White House and now it is here. There was a time when working hard and achieving the American dream meant something, it was to be admired and respected, but not any more. Now if you achieve the American dream you are evil and greedy, you are a villain. This president has managed to make being successful a crime in the eyes of too many people. We saw it with the protests and death threats that the AIG employees received. This administration has been successful at playing the class envy card at an unprecedented level and he is emboldened by the success he has had so far with his rich vs poor, divide and conquer tactics.
It is just sad to me that this is what we have come to in this country. Too many people are not willing to work hard to achieve their goals. They look around and see people that have more than they do and they get jealous and claim that this country is not fair. There is no more personal accountability. They look to the government to right the wrong that they perceive has been done to them. Instead of using their wants as a means of motivation they use it as a fuel for discontent and this administration is willing to feed that discontent because the solution is more over-reaching and intrusive government.

Oh come on… any enforcement of anti-competitive laws would be more aggressive than what it was under Bush. I have no problem with companies making money for selling a service or product as long as it is done legally and ethically. When they work to prevent competitors from entering the market or to kill of competitors unfairly, it hurts everybody.

I hear you, I just don’t trust the Obama administration when it comes to deciding which companies are ethical and legal.

That is true. We’re probably going to go from one extreme to the other.

I read an article that said in Norway, the courts determine DUI fines by the offenders income and personal wealth. OK driving drunk is stupid, but to punish people for working hard, being smart and having money? Is this where the US is headed? Is this what we want?

I thought they did that with all fines. Actually, they are not trying to punish them because they are hard workers or smarter. The idea of their system is that they are trying to penalize offenders equally.
Suppose the fine is a flat $100. For a person who makes $200K, that is not much of a penalty. On the other hand, for a person who makes $20K, that is a significant chunk of change. In other words, the flat fine penalizes the lower income individual more.
Now let’s say that the fine is percentage (0.5% for example). That person who makes $20K will pay the $100. However, the person making $200K will have fine of $1000. That fine has an equal sting to it. Actually, the fine still favors the higher income individual if you consider disposable income.

People should be able to use their disposable income in any way they see fit. “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need” This is communism, plain and simple.

You just mentioned the “C” word. That will get you on the right wing extremist list. Welcome to the club, you are not alone.

No arguments on people using their disposable income for what they want. Don’t understand the communism remark. Are you saying that their system of crime and punishment is wrong because you disagree with it?
