UN To Ban Plastic Bags Worldwide?
This is a mobile post, please excuse any formatting which may be missing, and please excuse the lack of block quotes for the quoted material. I will fix it when I get home.
According to this article the United Nations is considering ordering a ban on plastic bags worldwide.
Here is a quote from the executive director of the UN’s environmental department:
“Single use plastic bags which choke marine life, should be banned or phased out rapidly everywhere. There is simply zero justification for manufacturing them anymore, anywhere,” said Achim Steiner, executive director of the U.N. Environment Programme.
It seems to me that the United Nations should have more important things to worry about than plastic bags. Like, I don’t know, maybe the president of the United States possibly be willing to give Iran nuclear technology. Or maybe North Korea continuing to launch nuclear capable missiles.
But that is just me, I guess I am just a heartless bastard because I am more concerned with world affairs than whether a duck gets its head stuck in a six pack ring.

I agree with you that the UN should have better things to do. But having said that, I agree that we need to do away with plastic and find something more suitable. I did a lot of research on plastics while in school (ORU) and I was stunned to discover how they just don’t break down and how they cause serious problems for the wild life.
I don’t particularly have a problem using something other than a plastic bag but I do have a problem with the UN telling us what we should do!

Dominique,
I completely agree that the UN has no business telling us or anyone else what to do, but as for plastic, I have to disagree. As a chemist, I asure you that the chemical process alone in making and/or recycling paper makes plastic a superior choice for the preservation of the environment. And even though plastic takes a long time to break down, and it does eventually break down depending on the polymer as to how long, plastic can be recycled efficiently and effectively many times, far more that paper.
I’m not knocking paper or saying that plastic is the end-all, but I do believe that plastic is the better choice.
Here is a link to an article that does a fair and unbiased comparison, though not a particularly thorough job as the author does not go into much detail regarding the chemicals used in each process of the fact that paper production creates far more toxic waste, in the form of used chemicals.
BTW, hows that grand baby doing? We are expecting our 5th child this Nov.

Hey Vincent. I did know plastic is recyclable (sic) but my understanding is that when it is left as trash it does a lot of damage to the environment and the sea creatures. That is what I meant to say.
The grand-baby hasn’t made an appearance yet but she is definitely working on it! If all goes according to plan, I will be a grand-mother by the 28th of this month!
Congratulations on your new addition! It is an exciting time!

Dominique,
I sure can’t argue that point, plastic is not meant to be left as trash and does a lot of harm to the environment. Maybe we will eventually learn to better steward our planet thus removing the enviro-wacko’s pseudo-justification of imposing taxes and regulations to try to force us to do what they believe to be for our own good.
I don’t see the link that I tried to post. Did you?
just in case, here it is again. http://www.angelfire.com/wi/PaperVsPlastic/

jesus fear mongering. The UN does not have the power to band plastic bags. The countries in the UN can agree to band the product. That said it is not happening. Yes, it cost money and cost precious oil you all claim you want to drill now and drill here. I am pretty such most of GOP voters don’t know plastic bags comes from oil.
As for N Korea and Iran, what ever Obama does you won’t support. If he goes to war you won’t support him. Thanks to Bush the USA can not afford another war. So what is the man to do??

Where you are wrong about me is when you say that I will not support Obama if he goes to war. I will support any war that any president believes needs to be fought. I support Obama’s surge in Afghanistan.

What about the poor, defenseless trees? If there are no plastic bags, there will be more paper, right? We can’t win here!
