Democrats Don’t Have the Votes on Healthcare Reform

July 17, 2009

As of right now it does not look like the Democrats have the votes that they need to release the healthcare reform bill from committee. It also appears as if the bill is losing support as the process continues.

Last time I checked, it takes seven Democrats to stop a bill in the Energy and Commerce Committee,” Ross told reporters after a House vote. “We had seven against it last Friday; we have 10 today.”

It would appear that the Blue Dog Democrats and conservative Republicans are holding true so far, although the Blue Dogs are looking at possible amendments that would make the bill more palatable to them.

The biggest problem with the bill according to the Blue Dogs is that it doesn’t do anything to stop rising healthcare costs, and that is what the whole publicly stated goal of the bill was supposed to be. All that this bill does is defer the cost of healthcare to the government from the private sector, and how does the government get its money? Taxes.

I hate to get my hopes up. Every time I start to think common sense (or at least a sense of self preservation) is starting to creep back into Washington I get horribly disappointed.

I think Obama gave us some clues in his little impromptu speech yesterday. He said “this year” and his last word before taking questions was “eventually”. He knew it wasn’t going well. Trying to shift the focus, what I did not hear so much of was his pushiness and what I call bullying. But he was still confident, maybe that is his hubris. Well, at least he’ll be able to push the blame onto someone else if it does fail. (keep your fingers crossed!)
