Timothy Geithner Won’t Rule Out a Middle Class Tax Increase

August 2, 2009

obamafinger  I know that I don’t need to remind anybody that when he was running for president Barack Obama promised  that 95% of Americans would receive a tax cut and that nobody making under $250,000 would receive a tax increase. Many of us knew that this was bullshit, the president just couldn’t fund all of his policies and not raise taxes. The numbers just did not add up. But many people wanted to believe him so they voted for him anyway.

Recently Timothy Geithner was asked if Barack Obama would have to break his promise not to raise taxes on the middle class and he refused to say no. He was given several opportunities to say that the president would stand by his word, he declined.

To get the economy back on track, will President Barack Obama have to break his pledge not to raise taxes on 95 percent of Americans? In a “This Week” exclusive, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner told me, “We’re going to have to do what’s necessary.”

Certainly not a resounding no, now was it? But I take issue with the first paragraph of this article on another issue. Barack Obama has already broken his promise not to raise taxes on those making under $250,000 when he raised the cigarette tax, this was a tax on ALL smokers regardless of income level. While it was not a tax increase on all middle class families it was a tax increase on some.

That aside, back to the issue at hand.

He then goes on to say the following:

We have to bring these deficits down very dramatically,” Geithner told me. “And that’s going to require some very hard choices

Those “hard choices” certainly sound like tax increases on people who were promised tax breaks, a reversal of a campaign promise. But I do have one question. Who is responsible for those record deficits that Timothy Geithner is now saying that we have to reduce? That would be President Obama, who faced with deficits left by the Bush administration did nothing to bring them down and in fact increased them with spending that the United States couldn’t afford in the first place. Now the administration is possibly going to raise taxes on the middle class because they couldn’t control their spending when the money wasn’t there? We now have to sacrifice for this administration’s lack of self control?

I wish that I could say that I am surprised that Obama may be open to the “hard choice” of raising taxes on the middle class but I am pretty sure that I warned anyone who would listen that this was going to happen.

I remember President Bush the elder staring at the television screen and saying “read my lips, NO NEW TAXES!” before he raised taxes. This was THE reason that I did not vote for him in his re-election bid, I do not vote for anyone who raises taxes on anyone. And I believe this is the major reason why he did not get re-elected.

If President Obama breaks his promise to the middle class it will be interesting to see if they hold him to the same standards that they held the first President Bush to.

The difference between Obama and Gw Bush is that Bush is an asshole.

Just so you know Steve, I wasn’t calling YOU and asshole. Far from it. I was trying to respond to the post from Billy McBilly and WP put the response right below yours making it appear as if I was replying to your post.

Do you know Mr. Bush? Ever met him? Didn’t think so. Assholes go around accusing people that they have never met of being assholes. Just saying.

No problem Vincent, that was pretty funny though. I read your explanation before I saw the original comment.

Vincent – I have met the Bush’s and despite your idiocy they are very nice people. I don’t agree with everything Bush did, but he stood for what he believed and he stated what he believed. Obama is nothing but double-speak and disingenuous-ness.

        Dominique,
Either you misunderstood my post or I was unclear.
It was my intention to defend Mr. Bush against Billy McBilly’s statement that “Bush is an asshole”.
I have not personally met any of the Bush family, though Mr. Bush Senior did visit us in the gulf, but I am a definite loyal supporter, despite the fact that I also disagree with some of his actions. And despite my idiocy.

Well, we all know that Timothy Geithner is a tax cheat and an idiot. He knows full well that there will be huge tax INCREASES and they will hit people way under that $250,000 range. He just doesn’t have the balls to come right out and say so. Most of us with a clue know what is coming, that’s why we are fighting this irresponsible spending so fiercely. If we could just get those bozos down in D.C. to open their eyes.

We all knew that this was coming, we have been warning people about it. Hopefully they will start to listen. Maybe Geithner would be opposed to taxes if he paid any.

joe, the bozos in DC have their eyes wide open and know damned full well what they are doing to us. It is time we turn it around and give it right back to them. The current bunch of politicians have shown that they don’t give a damn about us or this Country. Time to get a whole new bunch and instill the fear of the people in them.

I’ve talked about the fact that people “want to believe” something, even though they know logically that it just can’t be. Some of knew this was coming, and some just didn’t want to believe it. Now is reality time though. If he thinks those poll numbers look bad now, just wait until those taxes go up. It’s early, but Obama is looking one term to me.

I think that you are right, I think that many people feared this may happen but they really wanted to believe him so they voted for him anyway. These people will not be fooled twice.

While I admire your altruistic optimism, I can’t help but fear that there are still enough idiots and fools in this country to reelect him or another just like him.
This is what we get when denigrates and freeloaders are allowed to vote.

This reminds me of the time that an uninsured, unlicensed, “Undocumented” mexican woman hit my wife’s car. Yea, all of the above detail is irrelevant to this post, but it is still damned well relevant to our current situation. But I digress.
The auto repair shop initially said that the dammage wasn’t all that bad, well it sure looked bad to me. But the shop assured us that it was repairable and set the estimate at around $8k, about half what the car was worth, so the insurance company authorized the repairs. Well, it turned out that once they got the car upon the jack, and me and my insurance company committed to the repairs, that it would be a bit more. And then a bit more, untill, you guessed it, they milked the insurance company for all that they could. and when I tried to sell the car I found out that the damage was actually beyond what should have been repaired. The car should have been totaled but my insurance company wanted to believe that it could be repaired at much less than what it would cost to total the vehicle despite my objections from day one. And in the end, we all got screwed. Except the auto repair shop, who made out quite well.
Kind of like Obama and the liberals in charge are going to make out quite well on this deal while the rest of us get screwed.

I am holding out hope that Joe is right. I think that Obama’s recent poll numbers show that people are starting to wake up to what they did in November and they have a major hangover.

Yep, taxes are the only way Obama has to pay for all the social programs he wants to enact. Its put up or shut up now. The circle is closing.
