House Democrats spar with Senate Democrats over healthcare reform

October 17, 2009

I have purposely stayed away from posting anything on healthcare reform, it has been nine posts and three days since my last post on this issue, because frankly I have become tired of writing about the issue and I fear that people have become tired of me writing on the issue. But healthcare reform is the big issue that is currently on the table, and an issue as important as this deserves the attention that I have been giving it while it is being debated so I will now step back into the fight over healthcare perform.

We all remember the president addressing a joint session and lecturing us that the “time for bickering is over,” he was basically talking to Republicans. He was admonishing them for holding up the legislation that is so near and dear to his heart. But it isn’t only Republicans who are “bickering” over the healthcare reform bill; Democrats are “bickering” with Democrats over this legislation as well.

While this bill inches closer to passage every day there are still unanswered questions remaining and Democrats are split on what should and should not be included in this bill. Democrats in the house and Democrats in the senate have differing opinions on the healthcare reform bill.

We all know that liberal Democrats want a public option, (which is missing from the Baucus bill) while moderate and conservative Democrats do not; while that is the most obvious and publicised disagreement it is not the only one.

One of the biggest undecided issues among Democrats is how to actually pay for the healthcare reform legislation.

Senators would tax high-value health insurance plans to pay for covering the uninsured, an approach supporters say would curb health costs because it would lead to employers offering less generous benefits. The more populist House would tax the highest-income people, placing the burden of caring for the neediest Americans on the backs of millionaires.

And there are other issue that have to be ironed out between Democrats before this bill is voted on. So while the president admonished Republicans for being the obstructionists he should also look within his own party. If the Democrats cannot agree what is in the best interest of the people on this issue how can he call out the Republicans and warn them to stop “bickering” with Democrats?

The truth is that this is a large and complicated bill and while he may think that political debate on this issue is nothing more than “bickering” the fact remains that debate is necessary and vital, his own party realizes this and have disagreements on what should be included. We can not hurry legislation as vast and far-reaching as this through congress.

The president would do well to learn a little patience and let the political process run its course instead of lecturing the opposition party for doing the same thing that his party is doing internally.

Well, IMNSHO, health care plans should not only not be taxed to pay for government coverage, there should be a 100% tax deduction for ALL medical expenses… and I mean every bandaid and cotton ball you buy.

The formula they have currently for figuring medical expenses generally leaves people with “cost in the mid-range” problems with no tax deduction for expenses. It should ALL be deductable, and not just for those who itemize. There should be a medical expenses deduction on a 1040 EZ.

Obama has to push for quick action on this issue for delays will increase the chance of the package going down to defeat. He is a politician and knows the ins and outs of political discoarse and is keenly aware of the opposition in his own party, but as most political leaders he will minimunize that while pointing out the oppositon from the other party—just the way these guys do business. In the end something will pass and it will besomething that the majority of people in this country don’t want. The Democrats are hoping that this will be forgotten by the time the next election rolls around in 2010. These leaders do realize that the American voter has a very short attention span and they are counting on that.

I find it very troubling that Obama and the Democrat party realize that this bill in unpopular and instead of giving the people what they want they choose to rush this unpopular legislation through in order to ensure that as much can stay in this bill as possible. He is putting his agenda ahead of the will of the people.
Obama is right, the American people have a short memory, it will be up to us to make sure that the American people do not forget.

I don’t know if you have heard but Massachusetts is about to take away the people’s “choice” because it is turning out to be too expensive. They are going to ask the good people of Massachusetts to choose second tier hospitals, doctors, ect so they can reduce the overall cost. That is rationing pure and simple. And…that is what will happen under Obama-care.

I would really love the chance to ask Obama, Biden, Pelosi et al, exactly why they don’t need to be included. Aren’t our taxes paying for their wonderful healthcare as well? Couldn’t we cut millions by adding them to the government healthcare system as well?

    Just a thought…

That certainly sounds like rationing to me, people like Ted Kennedy would not have ever been asked to accept this. Neither will John Kerry and the other politicians.
Massachusetts is also in the process of passing legislation that would mandate that everybody get the swine flu shot. The government will be able to break into a resident’s home and force children to get the vaccine against the parent’s will. There is something very wrong in today’s America.

You should continue to write about this topic all you want my friend! The lovers of this country, like you and me, need to keep this thing at the forefront and in the eyes and ears of all who care.

What I like best about what is going on with the in-fighting on the left is watching them eat their own! It is a great thing when they start in on one-another! Let’s all just sit back, keep sending those emails, faxs and phone calls and watch the left implode! You know what they have said? A house divided against itself cannot stand!

    This is gonna be fun!

I will continue to write about this, I guess I just needed a break. We cannot afford to let this issue slip to the backburner, it is too important.
It has been fun to watch Democrats “bicker” about this issue, hopefully they will continue to disagree and this legislation will fall by the wayside.

Speaking of breaks my friend, I am taking self induced hiatus for the very reason you posted here. It gets exhausting. Sometimes, taking a step back gives one more clarity. You do a lot of writing so I am sure you need a break every once in a while. Make sure you have fun AND keep us informed, okay!
