Massachusetts may delay certifying election results if Scott Brown wins in order to save healthcare

January 13, 2010

Another mobile post, there is just too much going on in the Massachusetts special election to wait until I get my computer back. Hopefully the link provided will work. If it doesn’t I will correct it when I get my computer back.

The duplicity of Massachusetts’ politics is in full display with this story that the certifying of the results of the “people’s seat” may be delayed by weeks. Needless to say, this is an effort to give the Democrats time to pass healthcare reform before the new senator from Massachusetts is sworn in, in the event that the winner is Republican Scott Brown.

Massachusetts has a recent history of changing the rules in order to thwart what few Republicans there are in the state; when it appeared in 2004 that John Kerry was going to become president, the legislature changed the law to provide for a special election to appoint Kerry’s replacement in order to stop Republican Governor Mitt Romney from appointing a Republican to replace John Kerry as senator. But when Ted Kennedy was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, the Massachusetts legislator changed the law again, back to the original law, to allow Democrat Governor Deval Patrick to name Kennedy’s successor– which he did.

Massachusetts is at it again; Massachusetts is citing the state law which says the state must wait ten days before certifying the election results in order to count all of the absentee ballots. I would normally agree with this, but Massachusetts ignored this very same rule when they immediately certified a House election result in order to over-ride a George Bush veto. While I cannot condone ignoring the law– two wrongs don’t make a right– this does offer us an opportunity to see how corrupt Massachusetts politics are.

This is being done for one reason and one reason only– to provide more time for Democrats in the House and Senate to reconcile the healthcare reform bill in the event that Scott Brown manages to pull off one of the biggest upsets in political history.

The heathcare reform bill has been delayed too long and Deval Patrick’s appointee has not yet had the chance to help pass the president’s bill. So now Massachusetts is trying to buy more time for the governor’s hand picked senator to vote for the healthcare bill.

Democrats are trying to flaunt the will of the people– support for the healthcare reform bill is falling away all across the country, but the Democrats are hell bent on passing it against the will of the people.

If Scott Brown wins, and if the Democrats delay his swearing in so that they can pass a bill that the American people do not want, the repercussions will not only be felt in Massachusetts at the polls in November, they will be far reaching and wide ranging across the country. Democrats may gain a “victory” on healthcare reform, but they will be facing disastrous election results and a loss of power in November.

Democrats will have to decide what they feel is more important– passing a bill to please the president, or keeping their jobs.

Either way, Massachusetts is in competition with Chicago for the most corrupt political system in the country. If this doesn’t awaken Massachusetts voters to the fact that the legislature doesn’t care about them, nothing will.

They know the jig is up in November regardless. Nothing to stop them from delaying the certification.

That is a good point, they probably realize they have nothing to lose anyway, so why not pass whatever they can, however they can.

Rick, It will be intereesting to see what happens after this bill is reconciled. I think this Mass. election, whether Brown wins or not, will have some Blue Dogs very nervoius about supporting this bill. If a Democrat in Mass. can’t win in a landslide all Democrats can’t feel safe.

If we could just prevent the healthcare bill from being signed. We have stalled it this long.

It has been stalled so long, we just have to stall it a little longer. It does sound as if the reconcilliation process is giving them some problems, maybe it will be held off long enough. And maybe some who voted for this bill before are having second thoughts after seeing how close the Mass. Race is. If a Democrat can be in trouble there, they may rethink their position if they are from a less Democrat controlled state.

    exactly right
If Brown gets elected the damage will have already occurred.
Delaying the seat will do nothing for them it will only show how completely desperate they are.
Blue Dogs will flee the Pelosi/Reid circus like the tents on fire.
Or sneak out during the vote. (all it will take is one).

It’s already sweet to watch their desperation… it will be absolutely laughable if Brown wins.

We have three more years of this circus…and thats what it is…if it weren’t so damaging it would be funny.

I am getting more and more excited and optimistic for Tues. I just hope that the true results are not blocked from the public. And the ten days to get the bill reconciled thing…. will ten days be enough? Was it not supposed to be done in August ’09? Should we not be concentrating on Haiti just now? Kennedy’s seat, please! If that’s the case we better elect Patches to the senate…..

Listening to local Boston radio you can hear exactly how firrd up state Republicans are. This is the first time in many years they have been fired up, and they have good reason. This is a chance in a lifetime for many of them, I hope Brown can pull it out.

No different from the situation in Florida which prevented Al Gore from claiming the election he truly won in 2000, but which was stolen by Jed Bush, the Bush lacky Republican Secretary of State Katherine Harris and a Republican majority in the U.S. Supreme Court. Something has to be done to redress the balance….

The spirit of Al Capone reincarnated in the Democratic Party. It is unthinkable that Democrats became so corrupted and out of touch with average Americans
