New Hampshire Rep. Carol Shea-Porter on healthcare reform: “If we sent the men home we would have healthcare done this week”

January 26, 2010

A few days ago I saw the headline on Drudge about a congresswoman who declared that if the men were sent home the women in congress would have a healthcare reform bill done within a week. I ignored the headline and didn’t even bother to read who had said it, figuring that it was just another out of touch politician who doesn’t understand the fact that the American people do not want this bill to be passed and that is why the bill has hit a snag, culminating in the election of Scott Brown in Massachusetts.

Image my surprise when I read this article in the New Hampshire Union Leader earlier today and found out that it was none other than my United States “representative” Carol Shea-Porter that had been the out of touch congresswoman who had made that remark!

Here is what Carol Shea-Porter said at a recent town hall meeting:

We go to the ladies room, the Republican women and the Democratic women, and we just roll our eyes at what’s being said out there.”And the Republican women said when we were fighting over the health care bill, if we sent the men home we could get it done this week

Before getting into this issue I would like to say that it is amazing that Carol Shea-Porter even bothered to show up for a town hall meeting in person; over the Summer she only held telephone town hall meetings so she wouldn’t have to face her constituents face to face on an issue that was drawing the ire of the people she is supposed to represent.

But here she was at a town hall meeting and she made the comment that if the men were sent home a bill would be done. In fairness, she claims to be quoting Republican members of congress, yet Republicans are denying that this bathroom conversation ever took place:

the National Republican Congressional Committee released a statement by nine GOP women members of Congress saying “the conversation Congresswoman Shea-Porter claims to be referencing has never taken place with any of us.”

Let us give her the benefit of the doubt. Let us assume that this conversation did indeed take place. Even if she did not make the statement herself, she obviously agrees with the sentiment.

You know why?” Shea-Porter continued. “I’m not trying to diss the men but I’m telling you it’s the truth that every single woman there has been responsible for taking care of a (relative) and so we think we can find a common ground there.”She pointed out that Maine’s two women U.S. Senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, “work very well together.”

She added, “There are issues we believe in being collaborative about

This tells us all that we need to know about Carol Shea-Porter; she is out of touch with her constituents. State Senator Sharon Carson sums it up best when she says the following:

The congresswoman’s ridiculous attempt to blame her male colleagues of both parties for the failures of her big government health care agenda shows that she is completely detached from reality.”Apparently Ms. Shea-Porter is too clueless to understand that the overwhelming opposition to ‘ObamaCare’ has nothing to with gender. A majority of Americans have rejected the Democrats’ health care agenda because they know that it will bankrupt our country and do nothing to improve the quality of care or reduce skyrocketing costs

  And she continued:

has refused to listen to the concerns of her constituents or pay attention to the clear message sent by the voters — both male and female — in the Massachusetts Senate election. She continues to support a disastrous government takeover of health care, and has now decided to blame men for the lack of public support for her reckless agenda.

While it is unknown whether this conversation actually took place, and while it is not known if a Republican actually made the comment that Carol Shea-Porter is referring to, it certainly appears as if Carol Shea-Porter agrees with this comment. She is guilty by association. This shows us what she really believes.

Carol Shea-Porter is blind to the fact that the American people are rejecting this healthcare reform bill. She believes that it is male congressmen who are holding up this bill, and while that may be true, she is ignoring the reason why this bill is being held up by those male congressmen. It is being held up because the people that she is supposed to represent do not agree with this bill.

The American people have made their opinions known to their representatives and the election of Scott Brown has confirmed what we already knew, and that is that this bill is not popular with the people.

But Carol Shea-Porter does not care what the people want. She was only elected because of a huge backlash against President Bush in 2006 and she was able to ride that same wave to re-election in 2008. She has fallen in total lock step with the Nancy Pelosi/Harry Reid agenda, and as that agenda becomes less popular with the American people, Carol Shea-Porter has decided to stay in lock step with the party leadership and has abandoned her constituents.

If she does not realize this now, she will realize it in November when the voters of New Hampshire rise up and vote her out of office. In November Carol Shea-Porter will be one of many in congress who get teabagged.

These are just a few of Congresswoman Carol Shea-
Porter’s accomplishments in the past TWO MONTHS. I’d be willing to bet that there were darn few Republicans supporting these “middle class” efforts.

    January 2010
Washington, DC — Yesterday, Rep. Tim Bishop (NY-1) and lead cosponsor Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (NH-1) introduced the Military Personnel Toxic Exposure Registry Act. This bill builds on successful legislative efforts over the last year to prohibit the disposal of toxic waste in open air burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan and to ensure that the thousands of troops exposed to these dangerous burn pits receive proper medical care.

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter is leading an effort to ensure that the final version of the health care bill will fully eliminate the Medicare Part D “Donut Hole.” In a letter to Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Reid, and Majority Leader Hoyer, Shea-Porter wrote, “Given the significant financial impact on our seniors and the widespread support for the complete elimination of the donut hole, we respectfully urge the retention of the House language in the final health care reform bill.” Shea-Porter was joined by more than 50 of her House colleagues on the letter.

WASHINGTON — New Hampshire’s Congressional Delegation today announced that New Hampshire will receive $8,257,288 in LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) funding through the release of FY2010 block grant funding. This funding is part of a national release of $1.2 billion in LIHEAP funding to help qualified low-income families pay for the cost of heating their homes. These funds are the second installment of LIHEAP block grants to be released for FY2010.

    December 2009
WASHINGTON, DC — Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter today announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will begin distributing $290 million in direct payments to struggling dairy farmers. As a member of the Congressional Dairy Farmers Caucus, Congresswoman Shea-Porter cosigned a letter to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack on November 19 urging the rapid release of these funds, and cosigned a letter to the Agriculture Appropriations conferees on September 14 urging them to include this funding in a final bill.

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter announced that the FY 2010 Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 3288), which has passed both the House and the Senate and is now headed to the President’s desk for signature, includes $10,000,000 in funding for the New Hampshire Air National Guard at Pease Air National Guard Base in Portsmouth. This funding was requested and secured by Shea-Porter and will go to constructing a single headquarters facility for operations that will improve communications and efficiency. The Consolidated Appropriations Act passed the House 221 to 202.

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (ME-01) announced that the FY 2010 Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 3288), which has passed both the House and the Senate and is now headed to the President’s desk for signature, includes $9,090,000 in funding for improvements to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. This funding was requested and secured by Shea-Porter and Pingree, and includes $7,090,000 for Gate 2 Security Improvements and $2,000,000 for Consolidation of Structural Shops. The Consolidated Appropriations Act passed the House 221 to 202.

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter announced that the FY 2010 Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 3288), which has passed both the House and the Senate and is now headed to the President’s desk for signature, includes $622,000 in funding for police departments in the First District. This funding was requested and secured by Shea-Porter, and includes $315,000 for the Manchester Police Department, $285,000 for the Rochester Police Department, and $22,000 for the Somersworth Police Department. The Consolidated Appropriations Act passed the House 221 to 202.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter voted in favor of legislation that will help protect consumers, families, and small businesses from predatory financial practices. The Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, which passed the House 223 to 202, ensures that there is increased oversight of large Wall Street financial institutions and creates a new consumer protection agency that will help ensure that big lenders do not offer harmful financial products to consumers.

Washington, D.C.—Today, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter voted in favor of the Tax Extenders Act of 2009. This legislation, which passed the House 241 to 181, provides property tax relief to 30 million families, extends the R&D tax credit for approximately 11,000 corporations, and offers a tuition deduction that will help 4.5 million families better afford college.

I am thankful that Congresswoman Shea-Porter supports the positions of our President and the House leadership 90-93% of the time. When you are supporting policies and legislation that helps the middle class, instead of the pro-wealthy and middle-class-bashing policies of the Bush administration, you are doing the right thing. Don’t get me wrong, there are positions of President Obama and House Speaker Pelosi that I do not like. But, on balance, our country is FAR BETTER OFF now than it was when President Bush kept the wars off the financial books and passed those costs onto our children and grandchildren…and oversaw the continued deregulation of banks and the financial institutions that have helped cause our financial and unemployment crisis. If you saw “The Card Game” on PBS Frontline last evening about the deceptive and high interest rate practices of the credit card industry, you know the role they have played in our economic collapse. Both parties, but more so the Republicans want no part of controlling and regulating banks and the credit card industry. Please investigate the votes of the Republican politicians in the House and Senate that have helped create this miasma that we are in. The names of Rep. John Boehner, Sen. Mitch McConnell, and Sen. Richard Shelby come to mind.

I’ve spoken to Carol Shea-Porter’s office about the send the men home statements. They have admitted that the comment was not simply a joke, but represented a real statement made to Shea-Porter by a single congresswoman. Shea-Porter originally stated “and the Republican women said.” They will not at this point disclose the name of the single congresswoman.

Keep in mind that after reporting the comment about sending the men home at the Manchester town hall meeting, Shea-Porter went on to eagerly give a “rational” justification for sending them home, providing an example of a state, Maine, that has already done so. Keep in mind also that she comes from a state where women are a majority in the Senate (among Senate democrats there are 3 men and 11 women), women hold ALL the Senate leadership positions, women hold the key House leadership positions and, for the most part, control the House. Her comments take on much more meaning given that the democrats in her state’s legislature have already sent the men home.

We’re continuing our efforts to identify the undisclosed congresswoman.
