Will the Tea Party hand Harry Reid a re-election victory?

February 15, 2010

In Nevada the Tea Party has qualified to appear on the ballot later this year. The Tea Party is planning on nominating Jon Ashjian as their candidate for Harry Reid’s senate seat this fall.

The Tea Party movement is growing stronger, to the point where the Tea Party is now able to field candidates in some of the upcoming elections. While once the movement was laughed at and ridiculed by the left, the movement has grown to the extent that candidates are now running based on the ideals of the Tea Party movement.

To tell you the truth, the Tea Party movement has gained more traction than I thought it would when it first began at the protests last April 15th. I thought that after the initial protests the people would fall back into their routines and forget about the issues that drew them all together. But I was wrong, the movement has intensified, the movement is real. The people are angry at where our government is leading us and they have not abandoned the Tea Party movement, in fact just the opposite has happened, they have become engaged in a manner that I haven’t seen the American people engaged in before. And it is culminating with people who are associated with the Tea Party actually taking the steps necessary to run for office and defeat those that they were protesting against.

This is great news, but it could come with a price. The addition of a third party in the Nevada senate race could be all that it takes to hand the unpopular Harry Reid a victory in his re-election bid. If the anti-Reid vote is split between the Republican candidate and the Tea Party candidate, the door could be open for Harry Reid to walk back in to the United States senate next year after his re-election looked doubtful.

How ironic would it be that the very movement that has fought so long and so hard against Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Barack Obama– among others– would be the movement that secured Harry Reid a victory from the jaws of defeat?

If this is the end result of the Tea Party movement in Nevada it would be unfortunate, but there is always collateral damage in any battle and this battle is no different. If the Tea Party movement is able to claim enough victories in the upcoming elections– and the movement is already of to a great start– it will not matter if they are not able to catch the big prize because they will have politically neutered Harry Reid.

If a re-elected Harry Reid is powerless because he has lost enough senate votes than the movement will have succeeded, even if their presence actually helped to re-elect him.

Harry Reid’s victory may be a loss for the Tea Party, but not for the movement as a whole. It would be nice to bring down Harry Reid, but while Harry Reid might escape the Tea Party’s vengeance he is more of a figurehead than anything else if the movement is able to claim enough victims in the House and Senate.

Harry Reid’s defeat would be so satisfying, and I am going to be disappointed if he manages to pull it out because of the Tea Party, but we must remember that the goals of the Tea Party are higher than just one man. There is more at stake here than just one man.  Harry Reid may win the battle, but the Tea Part has to win the war.

I also think that there is another aspect of the Tea Party that tends to be overlooked. A vast majority of Tea Party Patriots are independents. Independents are now the largest voting block in many parts of the country which means it is more than feasible, with a concerted and planned path, that we could kick Reid to the curb.

It was with the help of independents that Scott Brown won back Massachusetts!

If we do win in Nevada, I think it may be over for politics as usual. I also think it will be a voice so loud that Obama and his cohorts can not longer act like they ‘
    “can’t hear us now!”

You make some great points. The independents are where the key to these elections are. They are the ones who are going to decide the outcomes of these elections. A Harry Reid loss in Nevada would be amazing, it would really get the rest of those in Washington to pay attenetion.

I have been worried that the Tea Party would create their own party. I was hoping they would just get behind some good Conservative Republicans. This could be very damaging to the Republicans if this continues.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, if they form a new party it could actually have the opposite effect that they were hoping for.

This idea that Tea Party people are going to form a third party I just think is not true. The one in TN looks like they are but I don’t think that group is representative at large of the Tea Partiers.

Tea Party Patriots which is the group I have joined because of their integrity and focus on ‘we the people’ have made it abundantly clear that we are not forming a third party.

However, Obama won by running a very well, oiled machine and we can do no less. We needed to be organized, focused and working our butts off in order to pull off the upsets.

I do think we are getting behind good conservative candidates, but we are not getting behind the normal ‘political’ candidate meaning we are not looking for a Republican. That has proved dangerous in a few situations (NJ) so we are more focused on the candidate.

I personally am looking at people like Colonel West who tells it like it is, who doesn’t care what people think of him, and who will do what is best for America, not special interest. More importantly, someone who understands the Constitution and how to protect it as well as the Islamic threat to our country.

I think that you hit the nail on the head. We are not looking to form a third party. What we are looking for is good conservative “Tea Party” candidates to take on the incumbents in the primaries. This would give us a much better chance to win the seat, rather than split the vote and keep the same people in power.

I would really prefer that the Tea Parties field candidates in places where there are no viable mainstream candidates, ie, RINO vs. lib. Otherwise, I get wary of folks forming a third party. Pressuring the Republicans to heed the base should be the first shot.

Agreed. I also prefer taking on the Rinos and libs in the primaries, that is our best shot at picking up these seats. Once a thrid party is introduced all bets are off.

I have never liked third parties—as you say they often split a critical vote and end up giving a victory to someone with less than majority approval. Let us hope that the tea party can get behind the republican candidate in Neveda so we can say good bye to dirty Harry!

That would be the best scenario. I can’t even describe how happy I would be to see Harry get what he should have coming to him.

I did not know the tea party movement had become an actual party? Where was I? Who are the leaders? Certainly I had no hand in selecting them. I wonder if this is a Harry Reid scheme, and they aren’t tea partiers at all. They may just be vote splitters.

This has been one of my concerns about the Tea Party from the beginning. I think we run the very real risk of seeing them split the vote and if they do so, they will only be hurting the Republican Party. I know this is not all about the parties, but the GOP is one of the established parties and unless there are enough members of the Tea Party in Congress to gain committee seats, they would surely be relegated to obscurity, being unable to accomplish much at all.

If they split the vote, they will achieve exactly the opposite of what they want. They will help the incumbents win re-election. They would be better of, in my opinion, running candidates in the primaries to unseat the incumbents rather than trying to beat them with a third party.
