TSA forces 4 year old disabled boy to remove leg braces to pass through airport security

February 16, 2010

When you read about a story like this you realize that we have gone too far in attempting to be politically correct.

A police officer and his wife were taking their four year old son to Walt Disney World to celebrate his birthday. The Thomas’ had more to celebrate than just their son’s birthday. Ryan Thomas was born prematurely and because of this his legs were not fully developed; he just began walking with the help of leg braces.

When he tried to pass through airport security with his leg braces on the metal detector went off. The TSA agent at the scene ordered Ryan to remove the leg braces and walk through the detector, to the surprise of his parents who argued that Ryan could not walk through on his own without the braces. Ryan’s mother offered to walk through with him for support but the TSA agent said that was not allowed. Ryan had to walk through on his own.

The boys parents were allowed to walk through directly in front of and behind Ryan to protect him in case he fell; he did not fall, he made it through the detector on his own.

Needless to say, Ryan’s parents are not happy and they shouldn’t be. But this is what we have come to as a country under Janet Napolitano and Barack Obama. This administration is so damned concerned about offending Muslims that the TSA has reached the point where they must make a boy who is developmentally delayed take off his leg braces and risk injury so that we can show the world that we are not profiling Muslims.

This is disgusting, uncalled for, and totally reprehensible.

Here is the truth; we have a profile of who the terrorists are, we can not admit it but everyone knows that it is true. But we have to play this politically correct game and pretend that profiling does not exist, and you know what? With this administration it may not exist and that is a shame.

Profiling is not only not wrong, it is a necessary tool; not only in fighting terrorism, but in fighting crime also. When a crime is witnessed by an individual what is the first question that the police ask? They ask for a description of the criminal. A description is a profile. The police then look for a person who fits that description. That is not wrong, that is how criminals are caught. Will the police then question people who do not fit the profile of the criminal just so that they can claim they are not looking for a person of a particular race, no matter what race that is? I certainly hope not. What would be the use of obtaining a profile if you are not going to use it to solve a crime.

It is no different in regards to terrorism; we know who the terrorists are and what they look like. Stopping people who fit the profile of a terrorist does not mean that you are accusing that person of being a terrorist, it simply means that you are doing your best to protect the public from terrorism. Most clear thinking Muslims understand this.

The fact that we have reached a point in this country where Homeland Security is more afraid of offending the people we are trying to fight than they are of offending the parents of a four year old developmentally delayed boy– who obviously does not fit the profile of the people the TSA is looking for– in the interest of pretending that a profile of terrorists does not exist is just more proof that this administration lacks the courage it takes to fight terrorism.

The United States is granting Khalid Sheikh Mohammed– the admitted mastermind of September 11th, Nadal-Hasan– the Fort Hood terrorist, and the Christmas day bomber full constitutional rights as if they were Americans citizens and they are harassing four year old disabled children as they try to pass through airport security and we are supposed to think that this administration takes terrorism seriously?

You’ve got to be fucking kidding me! Bush and his administration spent years destroying our civil liberties and the end result is this stupid crap and you have the nerve (or is it mental deficit) to try and blame this on Obama?

Bush did exactly what any competent president would have done in the situation. As Mr. Pink Eye says, the War or Terrorism necessarily involves profiling, and I think what he’s trying to convey is that because of the bullshit political correctivism that’s being forced upon any level-headed citizens and easily bought by certain air-headed people, now we have to slow down the efficiency and muddy the goal (detect and prevent terrorism) by abusing disabled children, when at the same time, a Muslim fully covered with his/her cultural attire would not be touched. AND YES, THAT IS OBAMA’s FAULT!

I agree it’s overkill, but like the guy before me said, it’s been going on ever since 9/11 and was instituted by Bush and his goons. I say we go back to the way it was and take our chances. We turned into a nation of quivering pussies under the Bush admin. Be afraid! Be afraid! they said ad nauseum. Dick “5 deferments” Cheney is still saying it. Biggest non-serving war-mongering pussy ever.

    yawn

In case the two of you haven’t noticed, Bush and Cheney are gone. Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the current administration. If this is the only argument that you can come up with than perhaps you should both kindly shut the fuck up and let somebody who wants to debate this issue in the “now” instead of in the past fight your battles for you.

Wow dude. I thought you had a decent head on your shoulders. Been reading your blog for a while now and most things seemed legit. Your language and your attitude prove that even if you support the things I support, your no better than them if your going to act like that.

I apologize, this story really aggtavates me and when these two people came here and tried to blame Bush I guess I lost it for a little while. I just want people to debate on what is happening now, I get frustrated when the only argument to what I write is “blame Bush.” I want these people to realize that Barack Obama has to be held accountable for what he does.

You know this is one hell of a stretch of logic. You have a TSA agent being a royal asshole and somehow this is Obama’s fault. I can buy the incompetent government employee angle. However as pointed out, the TSA is a creation of the Bush administration. For historical context, there is no difference between then and now. The TSA treats everyone as a criminal including students with Arabic flash card, Muslim families discussing safety, women with homemade electronics on their shirt, small children, and democrat senators. It is not just people with funny sounding names that can commit terrorist acts. As such, I would expect them subject everyone to the same shitty treatment.

I don’t see what difference it makes which administration started it, they have to follow the dictates from above, and that is now Barack Obama and Janet Napolitano. They set the rules that the TSA must follow. As for Bush, I think that I have made it quite clear that I do not approve of the politically correct manner in which he tried to fight the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. If he had allowed the military to do their jobs the way the can these wars would have ended long ago, as has been proven by the success in Iraq because of the surge.

I see… you want to just sweep the historical context under the rug. I know you conservatives would rather throw him under the bus and forget about him.

He does matter in this case because the criticism is being levied in spite of the fact there has been no change. The TSA has been thugs since day one. You’re only upset now because they crossed the line and harassed people who did not have funny sounding names. If there was a change in how the TSA operated, I might agree. Maybe we have totally different definitions on what PC means.

Yeah, you’re all for profiling only when it people with funny sounding names are being profiled. It is a real pisser when it hits home. You sure did not like it when the lexicon came out last year.

So when I admit that I disagree with Bush, all I am doing is throwing him under the bus? You can’t have it both ways, I said I disagreed with him on this issue, that isn’t good enough?
If you want to call me a racist, just come out and say it, don’t beat around the “bush.”

Sooner or later he has to be held accountable for something that happens on his watch, doesn’t he?

The difference is, we have a profile of who the people who want to blow up planes because of who has tried to, and in some cases succeeded in blowing up planes. I think profiling is useful in crime fighting, but in the report that came out last year they were profiling for a problem that hadn’t happened at that time, no crime had been committed yet a profile was created. This is no different than if a report came out that said watch all black people because they may rob a store, that would be offensive and not defendable.
