Barack Obama to announce a much smaller healthcare reform proposal on Wednesday

March 1, 2010

Barack Obama appears ready to propose changes to the healthcare reform bill that he unveiled just days before last week’s “healthcare summit,” and will announce those changes on Wednesday. Nancy Pelosi is on record as saying that the newest healthcare reform proposal from Barack Obama will be “much smaller” than the one he proposed last week, and the one the House already passed:

“In a matter of days, we will have a proposal, it will be a much smaller proposal than we had in the House bill, because that’s where we can gain consensus. But it will be big enough to put us on a path of affordable, quality healthcare for all Americans that holds insurance companies accountable.

Is this finally an admission that the Democrats realize there is no way they can pass this enormous healthcare bill that they have been working on for about one year? It certainly seems as if that is the case. Barack Obama made one last push to pass his healthcare reform bill that culminated in the “healthcare summit” last week, even threatening to use reconciliation in order to frighten some Republicans to vote for the bill. But it is becoming evident that the president and the Democrats are not really willing to use reconciliation to pass this bill– and they probably will lose a reconciliation vote in the House even if they ram it through the Senate–  it was a last ditch effort to try to pass the bill and it looks like it may have failed.

So now the president is looking at yet another healthcare reform proposal and the rumor is that this one will be much smaller– that certainly is good news. But we do not know what will be in this bill and what will be left out of this bill, so it bears watching what will happen next.

Both the president and the Democrats have invested too much time on this issue to let it go without passing something– anything– so it will be interesting to see what this anything turns out to be. We don’t know what is in the president’s latest proposal but we will know in two short days.

The mayor of Las Vegas said that Barack Obama was a slow learner and he was right, but maybe, just maybe, Barack Obama has finally learned his lesson on this healthcare reform bill.

I am suspecious of this and wonder what much smaller means—900 billion instead of one trillion. I’ve heard some commentors say the new proposal would still be near a trillion. I seriously doubt Obama will drop his attempt to cover everyone in a new bill. Big government will still rule the day and any bill coming from Barack!

I don’t trust him either, what is hundreds of billions to this president? A drop in the bucket. There is no telling what he will propose on Wednesday, but I am not expecting it to be too much different from what we already have seen proposed.

I think I will come down on the side of your latest comment. I really do not believe the Democrats will give up so easily. I don’t know what this latest proposal will contain, but I think it is safe to say it will still be a very large and expensive piece of legislation. I wish they would consider doing this step by step, using smaller bills to tackle specific problems. It just seems it would work better that way.

It would seem that passing smaller related bills one at a time would be the way to go, it would probably have the support of the American people. I just don’t understand why Barack Obama feels as if he has to do everything all at once, what is he trying to gain?
