It is time for Michael Steele to resign

April 3, 2010

Michael Steele has moved on from being simply incompetent and inept as the leader of the RNC to the point where he is now simply embarrassing. It is time for Michael Steele to resign as head of the RNC.

From the revelations of the accounting problems that permitted the RNC to pay $2000 to a bondage club, to the fundraising letter the RNC sent out that mistakenly provided a number to a phone sex line, the Republican party has faced embarrassing missteps in the last week, and as the head of the RNC Michael Steele has to be held accountable whether he was directly responsible or not.

In my opinion, Michael Steele has not been an effective leader, fundraising is down and Sarah Palin– whether you like her or not she is the biggest draw in the Republican party right now– has pulled out of a fundraising event in light of the recent controversies. Even the head of the Family Research Council is urging his members not to donate to the Republican party.

Before that there was Michael Steele’s failure to properly gauge the voter’s dissatisfaction with the administration to the point where he did not actively support Scott Brown in Massachusetts, sending no money to help the man who eventually won the seat in spite of the RNC. Maybe with a little help Doug Hoffman could have won New York 23.

At a time when it seems that Democrats are poised to suffer big losses in the November mid-term election, and with the president becoming more and more unpopular every day, the only thing that could derail Republican gains would be for the Republicans to implode and they appear to be on the edge of doing just that.

I had gained confidence that the Republicans would win back at least one of the houses of congress– and maybe even both– but recent events have me concerned that Republicans could be on the verge of blowing what should have been a sure thing. As head of the RNC, Michael Steele deserves to be criticized for whatever shortcomings befall the Republican party.

The Republican party had better get its act together quickly or their shortcomings will allow Barack Obama to have free reign over the country for 2-6 more years. Judging by his first year in office, the country literally cannot afford that prospect. This means that Michael Steele must step down and turn over the party to someone who is competent.

Before anyone claims that I am just looking for a scapegoat in light of Michael Steele’s latest troubles, and before anyone claims that I am just piling on Michael Steele’s woes, I would remind you that I wrote a post over one year ago in which I asked the question, is it time for Michael Steele to resign as chairman of the RNC?

In that post I asked the following question:

Do they stick with Michael Steele and hope that he gets the Republican message out there and properly articulated or do they cut their ties now before it is too late. If they are going to make a change it needs to be done immediately, to delay would only bring embarrassment down the line. Sure making a change now would also be embarrassing but at least there will be time to repair the damage.

It certainly seems as if the Republican party would be better off today if they had cut their ties with Michael Steele last year. Michael Steele has not only been ineffective as a leader and as a fundraiser, he has now turned into an embarrassment and he could possibly take down the Republican party with him.

Republicans could be on the verge of screwing the whole mid-term election up, and now I no longer have to ask the question, “is it time for Michael Steele to resign?”

It is.

    Agreed!
This guy plans to coast all the way to Victory.
He’s counting on the Tea Party movement to push the Republicans through and then take credit for a Republican victory under his watch. The Republican leadership would do well to heed your advise and put in a true conservative like JC Watts perhaps. (even though Watts voted for BO)
    But…
If Congress is not flushed down the toilet and Obama makes another 4 years then I say it is the American people who have not learned their lesson and as much as I personally despise socialism and it’s true intent Communism we will only get what WE deserve…It won’t be Steals fault, it will be the fault of the American voter.
Lets hope the American voter is awake for November and beyond
Lets hope Steal does not cause a split voter block (that to me is the real challenge and Steal is not helping).

We will get what we deserve if we allow the Democrats to keep control, you are right. The voters need to remember what Barack Obama and the congress did to us with the way in which they passed this healthcare bill and Michael Steele needs to take an active leadership role in the party if he wants to remain. I am afraid that Steele will possibly cause the voter block to split also, and that means Republicans will lose the chance to take back congress.

The impression I get about Michael Steele is that he seems to always be a day or two behind everyone else. He is always reacting to things, but never takes the initiative to try to get things done. Point of fact, there were much better candidates for the chairmanship of the RNC, yet he still managed to get the position. Reminds me of how McCain managed to get the Republican nomination when there were much better candidates available. If Steele and the Republicans do not get off their respective duffs, we can kiss November goodbye.

That is a good comparision between Steele and McCain. Hopefully Steele will give us better resuls but I am beginning to get worried. You made another good point also about Steele always reacting instead of taking the initiative, we need someone who will take the lead and charge toward November with a plan. That doesn’t seem to be happening.

I’m with LD – Steele is reacting to Democrat’s missteps. I look at what the Republican plan is to take back Congress, and it is severely lacking with the election less than a year away. Steele is not a leader that is going to get things done.

That is the way I see it also Tom. We need a leader and right now Steele is not providing leadership.

Yes it is, I thought he should have gone a year ago. If he had, the RNC would already be over whatever embarrassment his resignation would cause them. If he were to go now, the stir it would cause before the election would give the Democrats a major talking point heading into the election. We are probably stuck with him now.

Yeah, too bad. We thought it was a good idea in the first place, but it’s really not working out, is it? Regardless of what Steele does or does not do, and regardless of all the RINO’s, we still nedd to get as many dems out as possible. Hey, it’s a start!

That’s true Deb. I think that there is a large “vote ’em all out” crowd and I think that it is growing every day. This crowd could vote still make it a good election for Republicans, just not for incumbents.

Steele was the Republican answer to Barack Obama. everybody knows that. There are much more qualified Republicans for that job. I can think of Darrell Issa, Joe Wilson, or even Paul Ryan. Imagine any of those guys heading the party.

The Republicans are still in disarray. A few years hasn’t changed that.

You are right, Steele was the answer to Obama. An attempt to show the country that there are minority Republicans in high places also. The move was transparent then and it looks foolish now.
How much better would the party be with Issa as head of the RNC? I can’t even begin to imagine.

I think he’s been needing to go for a while now. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to be getting the point.

At this point, I don’t think he’s dooming the party, as everyone is bypassing the RNC. Money is still getting to candidates, and folks are getting their message out. Steele might just make the RNC irrelevant, which might not be an entirely bad thing.

He isn’t getting the point. you are right. I hope you are right and that the Republican party can win without the RNC. It is possible, Scott Brown proves that.

I agree, Steele should go and the sooner the better. I thought he was a poor choice from the get go and suspect he was elected only because of his skin color—you know the story line.

Yep, he was only the choice to counter Barack Obama. A person’s qualifications should be number one, regardless of skin color.

Two of the most disturbing words in the American lexicon are Michael Steele. The man is a pox, a pariah, an outight beyond hubris ridden megalomanaic with the intelligence and competence of a fence post. The self-serving atavist has hijacked the RNC and holds same ransom. Consider some outrageous (and criminal facts). In 2009, Steele tracked through $3.7 million dollars of GOP money (that’s all donor money, thank you) for his own personal living large interests. Think about that. This was outside his salary and the speaker fees he damands, the later being a major “no-no”. Further, he refuses to fly commercial, demanding instead the renting of private jets. Over the past several months he demanded a personal and private jet to be purchased for him and the GOP “brain trust” declined. He’s know to routinely stay in $8,000.00 plus per night hotel suites, chow down on meals – a good number of which realizing a total tab in excess of $4,000.00 chiefly attributable to the high end champagne, clarets and burgandy he likes to swill. There are expenses (again, all donor paid) on outrageous gifts to various women, paid for women that has ben hushed up, the refurbishment of his GOP ffice to the tune of $38,000.00 plus dollars.
When Steele took office there was $22 million in the kitty. Since that time $96 million in additional donor money has ben added, making for an approximate total of $118 million. Today, the kitty stands at around $9 million, or a 92% drop. Yes, it’s an election year but still…………. Where has the money gone? Smart money (no pun intended) says cheque kiting. Moreover, as Ben Stein, who wrote an altogether polite missive against Steele privately holds – and he’s not alone – were a full audit performed on the RNC (Steele), it’s clearly bvious that criminal charges of embezzlement, fraud, cheque kiting and the like would also be established.
Major GOP donors have put away their cheque books in outrage and understandably so. Top staff members have resigned in mutual contempt and outrage. All of this is being hushed up. How pathetic.

What stinks all the more is the beyond conspicuous silence on the part of EVERY supposed conservative” pundit. In other words, the hypocrisy within the “country club Republican” rank and file is still standing “tall”.
Indeed, where is the outcry in the face of he two bit pimp, this charlatan, this resident Don King of the GOP who, as one major GOP donor stated, “It’s no longer the GOP/RNC, instead, the fraudulent Michael Steele Show.”

I applaud those who speak out, condemn illegitimate Soetero & Company and, by all means, keep it going. But that which is Republican makes me puke. It’s head administrator is a crook, a fraud, a con, a hustler, a huckster, a thief and the Republican party turn a blind eye to all of this. Outrageous.
