Obama jokes about Arizona’s immigration law, but the governor is not laughing

May 9, 2010

Amid escalating violence and crime that has gone ignored by the federal government for years and years, Arizona was forced to pass a strict immigration law. Many people from across the nation who do not understand what the citizens from Arizona are dealing with, have derided the law as racist and “misguided.” These same people– including some of whom are in the government– don’t seem to understand that the Arizona law is a mirror image of the federal law. Because the feds don’t have the willingness to enforce immigration policy for fear of being perceived as politically incorrect– this goes for both sides of the aisle– Arizona had to take matter into their own hands.

For some reason Barack Obama– as we will see in the video below– thinks that this is an issue that can be made light of, he made a joke about it at the White House correspondents dinner. Well, Jan Brewer– the governor of Arizona– does not think that Barack Obama’s joke is very funny.

Barack Obama’s  ill conceived joke just goes to show us that  the federal government does not take this issue seriously. Hell, Nancy Pelosi would rather treat drug addicted teenagers than stop the flow of drugs across the border because it is cheaper.

Until we have an administration that takes immigration law seriously, we will continue to see illegal aliens cross the border and while many of them are looking for honest work, many of them will bring drugs and violence to American soil. Americans are dying at the border, and that is not a laughing matter.

In regards to the joke President Obama tried to make, let me say I think it was in very poor taste. He is making light of one of the most pressing issues we have in America today. I think it may show where that issue rates on his agenda, which evidently, is not very high.

Now to the first comment on this post. I fail to see what right wing America has to do with what the President said or with what Steve has written. That kind of comment says and accomplishes nothing. Personally, I think it belongs in the spam folder, but that is Steve’s call.

It is in very poor taste to joke about a situation in which Americans are dying because of the lact of action from Washington, what was he thinking?
As for my comment policy, I have a very liberal comment policy. As long as the comment is in English and is not linked to a website that is selling something, I will let it stand. People like futiledemocracy prove the point that I have been trying to say about them much better that I can. When someone like him writes something like he did, he exposes himself for who he really is, and for that alone I think the comment should stand. 🙂

I thought it was timely. I don’t know if it was funny because it was clearly the punchline of a joke that wasn’t included in the tape.

Can’t help but recall President Bush’s use of his failure to find WMD’s for the entire substance of a comedy routine, not just a single joke.

Don’t forget the context – it wasn’t a press conference or speech, it was a night off for everyone, where they get to let down their hair. The President is expected to use current events as the source material for his jokes.

I can imagine the outcry if the President had joked about the rise of the unemployment rate past 8% after his insistence that passing the stimulus bill would keep it at or below that level.

On the other hand, this sort of fauxtrage has come to be SOP in the highly charged partisan atmosphere of American political discussion. We know that no matter what the President does, a certain portion of the population is going to appear to be apoplectic about it, no matter what it is.

President Lyndon Johnson one day was complaining to one of his staffers about the treatment he was getting from the press: “I swear, if they caught me walking on water, the headlines the next day would say ‘President can’t swim!'”

Timely, maybe. Funny, not! We have a situation where Americans are being killed because of the inaction of the federal government and I find it to be disgraceful that the president should joke about it. And this is coming from someone who feels that too many people taks too many jokes too seriously.
By the way, that is a great LBJ qoute.

I agree with Larry that is was in poor taste. I think the joke might not have been so tasteless if Obama and our government were indeed dealing with the issues on the border.

I unfortunately don’t think the border will ever get taken care. I am becoming convinced that Obama and his ilk are doing all they can to issue in the NAU or whatever he will call it. If he is indeed putting the last brush strokes on implementing the North American Union, then sealing the border is counter productive as Mexico, Canada and America will become one nation/country.

As for the first comment, I am beginning to realize that we shut them up with silence. Their whole purpose is to get under our skin. So my response will be … silence. 🙂

Did you enjoy your vacation, Steve?

The joke was in poor taste, maybe if the government was trying to do something about the problem it wouldn’t have been quite as bad, but I think it still would have been wrong.
I think letting the first comment stand does more to prove that person’s ignorance than anything that I could have said.
My vacation was great; 85 degrees and sunny in Florida with the wife and boys. Nothing can beat that.

If we just enact a law exactly like Mexico’s – 10 years prison to offenders caught a 2nd time – who can scream racism then?

I bet an honest poll would find most citizens want the millions of illegals already here also gone as well.

Very tasteless. As a resident of Arizona, I’d have to say I can only see it from our point of view. I live here. I pay taxes, health insurance premiums, social security, and the list goes on and on.

As the President of the United States of America, I would expect him to show a bit more tact when refering to one of this great countries states.

The immigration law is RACIST…PERIOD! Crime occurs all over this country! Everyone who commits a crime in Arizona is not from New Mexico. How many centuries has Arizona shared a border with Mexico? All of a sudden this is a problem? This is a way for ppl who wish to control us all to began their agenda. If we start the immigration law in Arizona…spread it among the 50 states you best believe there will be many of us who will “mistakenly” become immigrants!! There is already too many stories of children ending up on the terror watch list. Wake up people! I’m glad my president isn’t falling for the right wings agenda to depopulate to a number they can easily control.

Okay. I am not being mean here but have you ever lived in AZ? I have. I lived there from 2007 – 2008 and many of the people who live there ARE from Mexico. Fact. Many of those Mexicans are ILLEGAL as well. FACT.

I was stunned when I lived there to discover how many of them did not speak English – wouldn’t even attempt to speak English with me. Yet, they want all the rights, liberties and freedoms afforded to them because they are here – whether they are here legally or not doesn’t even matter. But ask them to assimilate and become AMERICAN or God forbid, SPEAK ENGLISH, and you’re called a RACIST. Hmmm….

In addition, this is not RACIST! This is called the LAWS OF OUR LAND! Period! Without laws, anarchy reigns. Now you may think it is better to allow people to do whatever they want, and that’s okay. But here in America, we try to live according to our laws and with justice. Those of us who live in America, and are Americans, understand that with the right to BE an AMERICAN comes the understanding that we must live according to laws that are intended to protect all of the citizenry – not just a subset of it.

Racism is about hatred. This law is not about hatred. It is about justice, legality and protection. Something I might remind you that our GOVERNMENT is sworn to do but is failing at miserably. So much so, that AZ (and now 13 other states that will soon follow) have had to step up to the plate and DO THE GOVERNMENTS JOB in order to protect all of its citizens.

If you would step back, away from the vitriol that Obama and this administration are trying to get you all wrapped up in, you would see the solution is quite simple. Any Mexican – or any individual of other nationalality – needs to abide by our laws and enter OUR country LEGALLY. Then, and only then, will all the rights, liberties and freedom be given to them.

My background is French. My mom came to this country legally and then went through the very long process to become an American and today, IS an AMERICAN. All our freedoms, liberties and rights, she has now EARNED.

Your scenario is a farce because this idea that illegals have rights as AMERICANS is a slippery slope argument. With this reasoning, I could then say that all prisoners have rights and it is racism to lock them up for committing a crime. My guess is … you wouldn’t be caught dead making that assertion.

Before you jump on the RACISM bandwagon, perhaps you should take the time to meditate on the actual definition of racism. You might even take a moment and look it up in the dictionary.

RACISM does not exist just because you declare it to be so. Nor does it exist because government officials declare it to be so. RACISM is a condition of the heart. It is a position of hatred against another person based on a characteristic that they cannot change such as the color of their skin.

Again, this law is not targeted at something these ILLEGALS cannot change. They can change their position in this country by simply re-entering this country legally. Or taking care of what ever documentation that is needed in order to make them legal again such as in the case of those who have overstayed their visa.

This really isn’t a difficult issue. What is difficult, is that our government has sat on its back end and done nothing for so long now that we have millions upon million of Illegals who have now come to believe they are entitled to everything AMERICA has to offer.

Unfortunately, our government’s silence, and now antagonistic attitude, has created quite the volatile situation where many people no longer understand the root of the problem but are now blindly buying into the RACISM rhetoric. You are a perfect example of the ‘blind leading the blind’ scenario.

LASTLY – staying in or coming to AMERICA is not a RIGHT! IT IS A PRIVILEGE!

I wish people would get over the idea that some people have a whole bunch of rights by virtue of being Americans. American citizenship bestows upon us the right to run for elective office and to vote (although note that there’s no Constitutionally-guaranteed right to vote for President). All other rights defined in the Constitution are available to everyone within our borders.

The Constitution defines the ways in which the government can deal with the people within our borders. It doesn’t differentiate between citizens and others – the right against self-incrimination, for instance, isn’t given only to citizens.

It has to be this way – if we start arbitrarily identifying people as illegal and then strip them of their right to, say, competent counsel, who’s to say that some demagogue in the future won’t have you -r me yanked from the streets and deported somewhere?

As to racism – there’s little point arguing about it because people use it to mean too many different things. What most people define as racism is what used to be called bigotry. Racism is the belief that one race is inferior to another. but the accusations of racism being levelled nowadays refer to simple bigotry. I couldn’t find anything in the earlier poster’s rant, for example, to suggest that he believes Arizona’s action was undertaken predicated upon a belief that the people entering the state illegally are somehow inferior. There is an underlying element to a lot of these arguments, though, that the illegal immigration issue riles so many people because the majority of illegals don’t look like us and don’t speak our language.

Finally, as to Mexicans in this country illegally, you suggest that they simply leave the country and re-enter legally. Is it all as simple as that? Something that can be done in a week or so?

I know that this is a bit late for this particular comment thread, but President Obama has once again made lite of the issue of border security, and doesn’t seem to understand that there is nothing funny about the flood of drugs and death spilling across our southern border. The federal government has done everything in it’s power to to obstruct local law enforcement from doing their sworn duty to enforce the laws of this nation. Obama seems to be totally oblivious to the fact that when he was sworn in to office, he too took an oath to uphold/enforce the laws and constitution of this nation.
Nowhere in the oath that Obama took is it implied that he has the right to selectively enforce only the laws that he agrees with. The main focus of the position that he holds is the security of this nation. Until he changes the law, he needs to stand behind their enforcement, regardless of how distasteful he may believe it to be.
Federal laws are not the exclusive domain of the Border Patrol, FBI, Homeland Security, ICE, or the DEA. Local law enforcement has also taken an oath to uphold and enforce the laws of this nation, and those laws include federal laws.

In conclusion, President Obama should take the job he swore an oath to do seriously, and let all law enforcement do the same.

Illegal immigrants have taken over many states in our country. They are abusing state welfare, increasing health care costs to hospitals, and getting free education in some states. Why should illegals reap the benefits of hard working Americans, which most don’t get welfare or free education. Seriously! What makes anyone think this is ok? Our country is in debt as it is, why feed the fire even more paying for illegals? NOT to mention the crime that illegals are bringing to our country, drugs, murders…… We have enough in our country to worry about, we don’t need them here. I’ve never lived in Arizona, but I must say, GOOD FOR YOU, for sticking up for your state and protecting the people. Illegals have pretty much taken over Massachusetts, which I moved away from just to get away from them. There days are numbered once we get the right president in the white house. Kick them all out and if they want to live in America, do it the right way. Again, this has been said so many times, “What part of Illegal don’t you understand?” OH ya, that’s right, you refuse to speak english, so ya, why would you understand?

I’m sorry, but just exactly who is drinking the cool aid here?
Making lite of this situation certainly won’t solve anything, ignoring it won’t make it go away, and pretending that you are some how morally or intellectually superior to anyone who is seeking a solution to an obvious problem like this is counter-productive.
Our laws are clear, and need to be enforced by everyone that has sworn to do so.
There are plenty of opportunities for name calling in our current political environment, but have you ever known this tactic to have solved anything? We need solutions, we need people to do their jobs. The immigration problem along our southern border has been ignored for far too long, and ignoring it has gotten us were we are today. It has become far to easy for our borders to be breached, and we need to send a clear and unambiguous message. If you have not entered this country legally you are a criminal and you are not welcome. You are a burden not an asset. Suggestions on how to fix our government from people who fled their own country because they couldn’t fix the problems there are one of the few things that are laughable in this whole situation. If the twenty million Mexican illegals in this country were to return home on mass and demand change in their own government they would most likely be able to affect some significant change. Revolution is all the rage these days. Take back you own country and make it the paradise you envision this country to be. Fix you own problems, before you attempt to fix ours.

Great response Bill, I would only add that Democrats also play the fear game but joeaz choses to ignore that. Which party is it that claims Republicans want to kill old people and push them off cliffs and which party is it that claims Republicans want old people to eat dog food? If that is not playing toward fear, I don’t know what is?
