Did Barack Obama’s big oil connections stop him from acting on the BP oil spill?

May 23, 2010

It has been more than one month since the BP oil rig exploded (or was blown up by North Korea) and still the federal government has not had the response to this crisis that you would have expected, oil continues to pour into the ocean while the administration appears to have no idea what to do about it.

In contrast to this administration’s claims that they have been on the case since day one, the lack of federal action while the Gulf Coast is being threatened by the biggest oil spill in history is baffling.

At least, that is, until you consider who the man is that has received the most money in campaign donations from BP in the last twenty years— Barack Obama. He is in bed with BP and big oil and there is the real possibility that  because of this the federal response has been less than adequate. Consider if you will what the reaction from the left would have been if the “big oil” administration of Bush/Cheney would have been so lacking. What is the difference here? Barack Obama received more money from BP than George Bush or Dick Cheney ever did. Yet Bush and Cheney were considered the “oil men” in the White House while Barack Obama is getting a pass.

Finally today someone called into question Barack Obama’s association with BP and correlated it with his lack of leadership on this issue. That person was Sarah Palin. Here is what she had to say:

I don’t know why the question isn’t asked by the mainstream media and by others if there’s any connection with the contributions made to president Obama and his administration and the support by the oil companies to the administration

Palin suggested this close relationship explained why Obama was, “taking so doggone long to get in there, to dive in there, and grasp the complexity and the potential tragedy that we are seeing here in the Gulf of Mexico.”

Barack Obama has received more money from BP than any other candidate in the last twenty years, but yet he has gone on record as saying that the cozy relationship between the federal government and the oil industry had to end, apparently he was not talking about himself when he made that statement. Again with the doublespeak from this man.

I think that it is time he looked into the mirror for once. Barack Obama’s reaction to this crisis was slow at best– and remains woefully inept– and we are left to wonder if this is because of all the money he has accepted from BP in the past.

How is it that one man can be full of so much deceit, contradictions, and double-faced lies? This man is never want of them. It just leaves me gob smacked!

The man has become very adept at saying one thing while doing the opposite. Signing the bill with 9,000 earmarks while claiming we needed earmark reform is a perfect example.

It would not surprise me one bit if in the future, we all find out that all of this was a plan in the first place to have elected a scapegoat for the office of President after the destruction caused by former Presidents up until this point! I have researched many topics that we are dealing with today that were happening even before Barack was born! I think that because of the situation that they all saw looming because of failed policies, they perhaps decided to dump all the blame for 40 years onto this one biracial man in an effort not only to free themselves of culpability, but to also ensure that no other person of color ever be elected President…I also believe that because of the base racial and gender bias prevalent in this country throughout history, there was a need to find the perfect scapegoat which as it seems to be turning out, Obama. I am saying this because the problems he faces are probably so overwhelming that we may never be able to regain stability as a country and because of the same thing happening in Russia ending the cold war era, there have to be rich, and powerful people having a problem with that! No one can actually support the notion that a biracial man who had few Washington connections up until 2006, even with vast support based on the need for change could really in all reality garner the Presidency, unless those rich and powerful people we don’t see felt that a scapegoat of sorts was needed so that the shift of responsibility could be made leaving Bush and Cheney free from virtual impeachment after the impeachment attempts of Bill Clinton for a sexual encounter with an of age intern regardless of how many people felt it immoral! I support that assumption based on the fact that numerous politicians since then have seemingly decided that they can and do in fact have the same lapses in morality… Also, it is a political reality that no one gets elected to the Presidency without the nod of the super rich and powerful players of industry who comprise the Business Roundtable. As an African American, I can truthfully admit that many of us were skeptical of such a fast ascension to the office making us wonder what reasons could there be for these captions of everything to allow this one man admission to the game! The only logical answer to that question is that he was able or considered able to do something great for them alone, because it is quite obvious to us that doing something great for the people of this country is and as always was too much of a hassle, too costly, or too socialist! Now this does not mean that we are sure that President Obama has not decided to go rogue on them, that is quite possible since he is getting measures passed with the largest amount of opposition ever recorded to any past President, however, if the plan was to make him a scapegoat it seems that they would be helping him to put the nail in his coffin rather than continually fight against their own plant so furiously and in doing so damage their own reputations as conservative Republicans who can run the country better than Obama has been doing. Perhaps the white part of him figured this all out and he has outfoxed the fox…others like Specter, Lieberman, Palin, etc., as they go rogue so to speak! But, in placing blame for this oil spill in relation to the actions Obama has taken, one must go further back and place that on the deregulation that tied the hands of the EPA and other agencies that could have prevented this from happening long ago, perhaps even before the President was born, so we will see how all this turns out, and believe you me, the oil industry may have decided to lace the pockets just to garner the trust of the American people, just like they did in the 1970’s when we all started buying fuel efficient automobiles instead of costly SUVs, so we are all to blame for their mischief are we not?

I saw today someone scoop up some brown goop off the surface of the water in the Gulf with some kind of spatula. Can’t they just do that? I’ll do it, gimme a net or something and a boat, I’ll take care of it. Holy cow! just do what needs to be done and stop pointing fingers around. Can you imagine how many barrels are under there? But oh no, we can’t drill there, see what can happen?

The administration is too fucused on how this plays out politically, they don’t seem to care about the environmental aspect of it.

The statement that “Obama received more money from BP than Bush/Cheney ever did is an absolute lie. Look it up. Bush/Cheney were the real authors of this disaster (although in all fairness the problem existed before they came into power-they simply exacerbated it to an unprecedented degree), and their intimate relationship with the oil industry is extensively documented. Only an ignoramus thinks otherwise. Look up the history of Cheney’s BP connection, his “Energy Task Force”, and his connection to Halliburton, which played a significant role in the explosion. While you’re at it look up the Bush family oil ties, especially those to Saudi oil and the Ben Laden family.
Trying to place the blame for this on Obama is more spin from an industry that has thumbed its nose at any kind of regulation for years and been allowed to get away with it, instead of accepting responsibility for their own unsound and unsafe practices
Bush/Cheney, like every other Republican, pushed deregulation and gutted oversight of industry, and the results have ALWAYS been horrific for everyone except the top 1% whose net worth increased dramatically-and without any benefit to the rest of the country to its citizens.
I find it ironic-if not disingenuous-that the ones that have been screaming the loudest against “government interference”, “government regulation” ,”government control” are now the ones screaming the loudest about the lack of government response.

The oil pollution is an environmental disaster. It will take many years, if ever, to restore the ecosystems impacted by the leak.
But the righteous attitude of the American government, and to an extent, the American people, is not pleasant to see.
The Union Carbide gas leak in Mumbai in India in 1984 killed 5000 that night and 15,000 more in the following few weeks!
This poisoned site has STILL not been cleared up after 23 years, and there are many children STILL being born with birth defects every year.
If it is right that America gets their environmental disaster cleared up then the same should apply to Mumbai where it is people, particularly children, who are suffering and dying from the effects of their polluted land.

“In 2005 President Bush signed the Energy Policy Act, which retained the focus of Cheney’s report, into law. It included what has become known as “the Halliburton loophole,” which removed authority from the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate a potentially dangerous gas-drilling process invented by Halliburton. ”

Who was Halliburton chairman and CEO between 1995 and 2000?
